Revolutionary Dead

Rate this book
A horror novel like you’ve never imagined. Zombies like you’ve never seen.

William’s bad luck is about to turn—for the worse. Trapped behind enemy lines on the eve of revolution, the British officer has evaded colonial militia so far. When he stumbles across a quiet village, his hopes of escaping to the relative safety of Boston suddenly look promising.

Until he runs into something worse than vengeful patriots prowling the darkness.

Caught between the undead and roving bands of minutemen, William devises a desperate plan to make it out with his life. But before he can flee, he’s captured by the local villagers. Only one young woman, Carolyn, the daughter of a hated loyalist, believes his story of the unquiet dead. Between the two, they struggle to convince the others of the terror about to descend on all of them.

As the undead sweep the outskirts of the town, William and Carolyn realize there’s only one way to stop them—by heading straight to the source of the plague, to the brooding lake a mile into the woods where the dead talk.

What really happened out at the dark lake? Can they unlock the secret in time? And how far will the dead go to stop them now?

From the bestselling author of the dark fantasy trilogy The Books of Conjury comes this breakneck horror novel.

Kevan Dale grew up in a Massachusetts home full of books, next to a winding patch of woods full of stories (in his already vivid imagination). Books and stories eventually pointed him to a degree in English. That degree in English inspired him to pursue a career as a professional guitar maker (long story.) A decade of luthiery led to a second career, this time in video games (another long story) where he remains. It all made sense at the time, honestly.

Throughout all, books and stories. History, fantasy, horror. All of them tug at his imagination, and he happily follows.

Kevan is once again in Massachusetts, glad to live in his own home full of books, next to a winding patch of woods full of stories.

I have mixed feelings about this story.

The beginning is very interesting, with people messing with things that they shouldn't causing a reaction that they didn't expect. From there, things start to slowly spiral out of control, and, to add to that, there are rumours of British soldiers being seen in the area, causing concern in another way. What I expected then was to read about battles on two fronts, the British on one side and the 'others who had been summoned'.

This is where things seemed to slow down somewhat. There are some good characters and the back story is good, but the middle seems to be a bit too samey. There are several encounters that are quite gory and new creatures are created at a good pace, but things don't seem to move on fast enough.

Towards the end of this story, things get a bit more interesting again and we see a change of direction slightly and then things really pick up, building up to a finish that does make this story worthwhile.

A deliberately vague review. One for fans of zombies / David Cronenberg but this is not a historical horror fiction novel as I first though it may be.

3.5 stars - worth a read for horror fans, a nice take on the 'zombie' idea and has some familiar themes from other sources, but not in a plagiaristic way. The final battles were worth waiting for.

Here and there. No real understandable plot. Characters were introduced and dismissed and introduced with no explanation until the end of the book. I didn't know what was happening half the time...It was a rollercoaster ride with no seatbelt and someone puking in the front row
