i bought this book used, over a year ago, with the desire of reading more local works. i was intrigued by the cover (which is not available here, but is of 3 figures in white cloaks adorned with black textured hoods, standing atop grass, drawn in a folk-ish, haphazard style).
ross has a dynamic writing style that is very descriptive and direct. as someone who's lived in the Maritimes their entire life, I appreciate these stories, and I enjoyed reading them. i feel connected to these characters as if I've met them myself, around the towns I've been in, through my own family, friends. the stories are tense, emotional, vulnerable and real. ross's ability to write in different voices/perspectives and seem to emulate them seamlessly is impressive. her prose is poetic and very human. i cried while reading "thanksgiving". i thought of my mother and her sisters while reading "the girls". and ending with the titular "dark secrets" was depressing. i appreciate the rawness of this book. nothing ends well, the secrets are kept, the horrors they present are realistic. this felt very much like home.
