It is fun flipping Atlas pages aided by magnifying glass. There were standalone visualisation softwares too that could be installed on personal computer: most popular (and free) was probably Google Earth. Atlas gets outdated often due to migrations, settlements, landform transformations, course change of rivers and more.

Modern alternatives:

- Bhuvan (ISRO)
- Atlas and Thematic Mapping (NATMO)
