The Punic Wars between 264 BCE and 146 BCE were a series of wars fought between the armies of ancient Carthage and Rome. In the years before the battles broke out, Carthage had risen from a small port community to the Mediterranean region's richest and most powerful city. Carthage had a powerful navy, a mercenary army, and ample resources to act as an authority in trade and politics. As such, Carthage prohibited Roman trade in the Western Mediterranean through an agreement with what was then just a small city called Rome. Without an organized military, Rome had little choice but to abide by the treaty. As history shows, however, Rome didn’t stay small and insignificant for long. As its size and power grew, so too did Rome’s desire to fight back against its Carthaginian so followed the three Punic Wars. At the start of the conflict, Carthage dominated the Mediterranean. By the end of the wars, Rome had not only conquered Carthage but become the strongest society in the Western Mediterranean. It was a formative period for the Roman Republic and one that would eventually lead Rome to form its own empire. A solid overview of a very interesting and influential era, these wars led to the end of the Carthaginian empire, as well as the rise and fall of the Roman Republic, and the rise of the Roman Empire. It is so interesting to see how much one decision can cause a snowball to become an avalanche. I wish this era was better (or even) taught in school. Check it out.
The book about the punic wars lack somehow a nice story telling, it seems sometimes just a mere counting of names, dates and battles. At some point it becomes complicated to follow and it feels that a lot of information is missing, in order to understand the context in the best way. Nonetheless the recount of the history shows a really interesting succession of events that shaped the future of the roman people and therefore, all Europe and today western society.
This book was interesting as if you like the topic I recommend, this is a great starter for intermediate readers who want a very bear bones book on the Punic wars, and also a great book to get your feet wet in the Punic wars to see if it’s a topic you’re interested in, it left some important background information like the politics that made the battles and wars but the book only focuses on the battles which is alright for what it is.
A fine book to get an overlook about the punic wars. All the descriptions are more briefly but contain all the basic information like generals, army sizes, locations and most often the intentions and importances of certain cities. I must say though, I often wished there would be maps throughout!
I supposed its a good book to get startet on the early roman and cathargo era.
A good start for the Punic Wars. Reading about the key parts of the war was both engaging and informative. Hannibal and Scipio's feud was beyond legendary.
Good informative book with plenty of info. Not keen on the writing style as there wasn't much storytelling or personality and seemed like something that AI could have written.
