description

description

Yes, I’ve already read the two smaller graphic novels encompassed by this collection. But the local bargain outlet had this handsome hardcover at a price too ridiculously low to pass up. This way, I can reread the adventures of Kamala Khan whenever I like without having to check the books out of the library.

Obviously, I really like this series. With Carol Danvers busy being Captain Marvel, the Ms. Marvel name was up for grabs. By making her Pakistani-American, and setting her adventures in Jersey City, Wilson and Alphona have given the title a delightfully distinctive identity to help it stand out from the rest of the books on the stands.

In this volume, MM gains her powers and makes a name for herself by defeating the mysterious mastermind kidnapping teenagers from Jersey City. The art is fun, slightly on the goofy side. It reminds me of a cross between Mort Drucker and Kyle Baker. The writing is smart. Kamala’s relationships with her family and friends are believable and complex.

Single favorite issue for me is #6, in which she has a conversation with Sheikh Abdullah at the mosque that's just all kinds of lovely and characterization-y, followed by a meeting with Wolverine that is even more so.

Ms. Marvel is one of the better titles to come along in recent years, and it deserves to be widely read. Highly recommended!

This is the spoiler free review of Ms. Marvel issues 1-19 collected as volumes 1 and 2. If you would like to read the spoiler full review complete with pictures please visit https://amanjareads.com/2020/05/06/ms...

Ms Marvel begins her story as Kamala Khan. She's in high school and has a couple of friends there but doesn't really fit in with the popular kids. Her family is Muslim to various degrees. Her parents are culturally and religiously Muslim while her brother is bordering zealot territory. She places herself within that world but has Americanized a bit more.

She also spends her time writing superhero fan fiction and fantasizing about being powerful. Her dream becomes a reality when she gets caught in the Terrigen Mists and develops strange shape shifting and healing powers.

She will discover several issues into the run that she is an Inhuman and her powers were lying dormant until the mists woke them up. Now her goal is to master her use of these powers and protect her home town of Jersey City from bad guys, and robots, and monsters, and maybe the end of the world.

Along the way she deals with all of the normal perils of being a teenager. She needs to get her homework done, escape getting grounded, and manage emotions around boys.

The way that Kamala does everything is with the strongest of integrity. She's incredibly strong willed. She does not give in to anyone on any subject that she believes in.

Her religion, culture, ideology, and morals are constantly being challenged but she knows what she believes in and does not bend. I respect her so much for all of this. She's an actual good person and at this point seems incorruptible.

She also becomes a leader with natural grace.

I especially enjoyed a plot in volume 2 in which she starts to fall head over heels for a boy. But she never loses herself. She's so much stronger than any teenage girl I ever knew. Mentally and physically.

There are a couple of cliffhangers by the end of this run and I'm curious to see where it goes from here. I need to do a little reading guide research because I think it's about to tie into a much larger story line and it might be one of those cases where many lines have to be read at once to get the full story. Sigh, comics.

Regardless, Kamala Khan, Ms Marvel, is one to look out for. She's a new hero on the Marvel scene but she's super powerful in all of the ways one can be powerful and she has a very bright future ahead of her.

This is a new character who's definitely worth getting into.

Ok, this was a lot of fun, charming and a joy to read. Kamala is a young high school student living in Jersey. She sneaks out to a party and gets caught up in the Terrigen mist and gets cocooned up and comes out powers blazing. Kamala herself is so precious and funny. It was awesome watching her figure out her powers and watching her learn that it’s better to just be herself versus trying to be like everyone else to fit in. Loved the cameo that led to her first “team-up”. At first glance, the art looked a bit off but upon reading through the book, the art fit the tone of the story pretty good. Loved the friendship founded between her and Lockjaw. At first I was indecisive about the MCU changing her powers but now after reading this book, I wished they would have left her an Inhuman. Since it looks like they are going to through that part of who she is out the window, we won’t get the cool interactions with her an Lockjaw. But anyway, great book. Looking forward to the next volume.

Back in the dawn of the Marvel Universe one of the Most amazing stories told was the trials and pitfalls of being a superhero in high school. Peter Parker went from issue to issue being bullied by Flash Thompson at school, harassed by J Jonah Jameson at the Daily Bugle, smothered with love & wheat cakes by his adoring Aunt May and occassionly fighting the world's most bizarre super-criminals. The success of Spider-Man was attempted in Strange Tales with the Human Torch and years later with Richard Rider in the pages of Nova. But they never really were able to capture that magic again. Even the hits Runaways and Young Avengers didn't quite make it since these were teams and not stories about a solo character struggling to be a hero. But now that's all changed. Let's give a great big Marvel Universe welcome to Kamala Kahn, the new Ms. Marvel!
Not since Stan Lee and Steve Ditko gave us the Amazing Spider-Man every month has Marvel produced a title as fun to read, as culturally relevant and as addictive as G. Willow Wilson's Ms. Marvel. This is wonderful stuff, that is an absolute thrill to read and to praise.

What an absolutely surprising read this was! Ms Marvel is entirely a new entity for me - I've seen her previously pop-up in different titles I've read, but I have unfortunately never ventured into her solo offerings before. I'm glad I finally did!

It's hard not to fall for Kamala Khan as a character when she's written this well. Even though the origin story feels a little rushed and nonchalant, the brilliant dialogue and characterization of the people around her absolutely make this special.

The art is unique (to a point that I'm sure it may divide some folk) and incredibly detrimental to the fun atmosphere that this book delivers.

The main thing that surprised me here though, was just how intelligent this is. Being new to Kamala Khan, I guess I was expecting something more along the lines of YA reading, but this absolutely works for adults on a more mature level also.

Overall, this was an incredibly fun and delightful reading experience. Kamala Khan is an instantly likeable character and is extremely well written here. The exceptional characterisation, dialogue and plot all make this some fantastic reading.

Ms. Marvel is a very self righteous and amazing addition to the Marvel roster. It centers on Muslim American girl Kamala Khan who live with her strictly traditional family in Jersey City, and her already complicated teen life only grows when a superhero run-in unexpectedly gives her superpowers. Kampala’s story is full of usual teen drama and there’s also some funny moments and a surprising guest appearance. It does slightly lack some of that Marvel magic, but it still delivers a exciting ride. A- (91%/Excellent)

I will literally riot at Disney Headquarters if the Ms. Marvel TV show is not perfection. Im so excited to start my reread of this series. Kamala is my favorite because she’s so relatable (I too would die if I met Captain Marvel) and I love her spunk. Also her powers. Pretty sweet.

I could have sworn I'd reviewed this already. I've reviewed volumes 3 and 4, and I'm doing 5 in a moment, so I'm not sure why I missed this one and volume two. Better late than never, I suppose.

Kamala Khan's debut stories are one of the best introductions for a character in recent memory. She's your typical teenage superhero...except where she's not. Writer G. Willow Wilson leans into her similarities and differences with equal measure, making Kamala's culture accessible and interesting to those who haven't been exposed to it before, while making sure Kamala is a rounded character with a lot of facets to her personality. You cannot label her just one thing, and that's absolutely perfect.

In terms of the stories themselves, they're pretty damn good. The first is her introduction, which gives us her origin story complete with a visit from the Inhumans and some Captain Marvel, while the second sets up the Inventor, who will be a recurring foe for Kamala, while a hilarious team-up with a healing-factor-less Wolverine separates out the first and second arcs. Kamala's finding her feet, and while her superheroic identity takes a while to establish itself, her shining personality does the rest of the heavy lifting.

On art is the indominitable Adrian Alphona for the main part, who was also responsible for introducting the world to the Runaways, so he's making a name for himself that way as well as being an excellent artist. His little background details are almost as funny as the main story at times, while fill-in artist Jake Wyatt tackles the Wolverine story with some simplistic and yet highly effective pencils.

Ms. Marvel is one of, if not the best new character to come out of Marvel in recent memory, and one read of this volume will show you why.

Conceptually this is fantastic—or, frankly, it's rather sad that it's groundbreaking to have a heroine who's explicitly Muslim, but it's about time. Some nice balance, too, in Kamala's family; the characters aren't especially fleshed out, but the story takes pains for Kamala's life to be full of normal teenage problems. Teenage idiots at high school, overprotective parents, and sibling squabbles? Check. Some kind of mutant-or-maybe-not-mutant powers? Check. (Now, whether or not the latter falls under 'normal teenage problems'...)

So yes, well played. But my gut reaction is pretty tepid, and I'm not sure why. I liked the artwork well enough—more in some places than in others, but that's par for the course. To some extent I wonder whether the comic does a disservice to itself by being a little too topical and self-aware—teenagers as a drain-on-society-slash-untapped resource, for example. I didn't really read comics as a kid, so I don't know exactly how these things typically work, but...maybe a clearer single villain? I was left with the sense that I wasn't sure what Kamala had been fighting, other than teenage lethargy that's sort of being combated by a villain who's using their energy to do...something.

High marks for making superherodom a little less white and a little less male, but not really the right fit for me.

Ms. Marvel, the hit Marvel comics series about new superhero Kamala Khan is the sort of fresh air I want from all Marvel comics. Most big two mainstream superhero comics nowadays feel like they're cut from the same cloth, with massive things happening that don't matter and a never ending sense of things needing to get put back in the sandbox.

The scope is what makes it here. Well, scope and what writer G. Willow Wilson and artist Adrian Alphona do with that given this new character. It's small and personal while having moments of tremendous action and adventure. Sure, there's a two issue stretch where Wolverine shows up, but it's fine and doesn't detract from the fact that this feels like it matters because it isn't tied to the Marvel universe at large. Even the bringing in of Medusa, Lockjaw, and Inhumans as a thing doesn't feel out of place because it doesn't define Kamala so much as explain her a bit.

All in all, this is a fabulous series. Like Ultimate Spider-man or Runaways, it's a great example of how to do big and sexy superhero comics on a small scale that feels massive because it's only beholden to itself. It is significant in its seeming insignificance, a way forward for superhero comics that I, personally, am more interested.

And that's hard to do at this point.

“Good is not a thing you are... It’s a thing you do...”

For the first time in my life, I am reading a story which centres around a Muslim girl from a traditional Muslim family who happens to become a superhero. As a Muslim reader, it warms my heart to see a graphic novel print a story where we are finally the good guys..

Whilst Kamala’s super power is embiggening, her knowledge and caring nature is more of a strength - she doesn’t have an arch nemesis but the challenge of saving the community from harm. Kamala is a great character. She’s just an everyday - average teen with huge aspirations and a loving nature - she tries to balance her life, her family and school while trying to keep her community out of harms way.

“Nobody has the right to give up on a whole generation before its even had a chance to prove itself. We are all in this together and we gotta remember that..”

Great art work throughout graphic novel - I’m invested in this series and am on mission to own the entire collection!!

“No matter how deep you bury it, no matter how many times you febreeze it, it starts to stink and then you gotta deal with it... My name is Kamala Khan and I’m here to take out the trash...”

Kamala Khan is awesome and I cannot thank Marvel enough for running the amazing series of Ms Marvel!!!

Been meaning to check this out for a while. Alphona's pencil work was outstanding. I think his quavery lines expressed the adolescent anxiety of the characters (particularly the excellent facial expressions), and added a dynamism to flowing things like hair and Kamala's scarf. Storywise... nothing new. Kid gets powers, powers a metaphor for alienation and adult responsibilities, adventures ensue. A villain cloned from the DNA of Thomas Edison and a cockatiel was a stroke of minor genius.

A collection of the first ten issues of Ms. Marvel, this is her origin story and first adventure. The origin story starts well, a Pakistani-American high school girl in New Jersey with conservative parents who don't want her going out at night gets transformed into a shape-shifting superhero who is constantly forced to balance her families rules and expectations with her friends and her desire to do good in the world. This all brings some diversity and interest and makes Ms. Marvel, or Kamala Khan, into a sympathetic and interesting character.

But once you get past the origin story you are into what feels like a juvenile story as she teams up with a large teleporting dog to fight a bird-creature called the Inventor who is kidnapping children to turn them into batteries. She has battle after battle with his inventions and then with him. No plot twists, no real character for anyone but Ms. Marvel, and the premise itself is silly (the Inventor supposedly preys on the fact that everyone thinks teenagers are phone-addicted wastes, but when they come together to prove otherwise he is defeated).

About every other year I read standard comic books. But I still have not found one that for me sustains its interest in a format that is limited to repetitive installments that all have to be tied together in much the same way when they end. Before I give up, however, I'll try The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl, Vol. 1: Squirrel Power.

The storytelling in this one is on the nose with little by way of subtext, but it's a good story in its simplicity. I suspect the target audience is young. The art is interesting with a vagueness around the edges and clarity reserved only for the focus of a given moment.
