Here’s the situation: You and two other individuals have been randomly selected for a chance to win $10,000. The $10,000 will be awarded to the individual who writes the most persuasive essay on the overall health benefits of getting protein from a plant- vs. animal-based diet. However, the essay cannot be misleading, so it needs to cover both the benefits and drawbacks of doing so. You do the research and are now armed with the narrative information that you need for your essay. But where do you start? How do you make the essay compelling and convincing?

Don’t worry. There’s no need to fear. Colonel Carla Bass’s book, Write to Influence, will save the day. Immediately Colonel Bass will convey the importance of creating an outline that provides structure, establishes your thesis and key points, identifies contrary points, etc., to help you create a solid infrastructure. Next, you draft your essay. In doing so, Colonel Bass helps you Know Your Audience, Set the Hook, Make the Case, and Clinch the Deal.

Next you need to sculpt your essay into a lean, mean, fighting machine. How? By cutting useless words, making sentences shorter, eliminating redundancies, leading with the basics, relying on verbs, being clear, maintaining focus, etc. As part of this iterative process, you will revise, edit, and proofread.
