When my wife and I started dating, we watched a lot of Masterchef Australia together.
The following Valentine's Day, I decided I was going to surprise her with a home cooked meal. Apparently, though, inspiration and enthusiasm will not trump skill, of which I had none. If it didn't come out of a packet or only needed to be heated, I simply didn't make it.
So...on that very special night - I pulled out all the stops; wine, candles, flowers, etc.
She was very impressed, until she put the food into her mouth.
"What the fuck?!" she screamed, or I guess that's what she meant. What actually came out, with the food, sounded more like "Wha-a-ach?!"
She grabbed the bottle of wine, open and rested - hey, I'm not a complete idiot! - and downed it like a sailor who was stranded on an island for a year...or Captain Jack Sparrow, if he could get the rum.
About halfway through the bottle, she gulped some air, gave me a dirty look, said "A starving pig won't get that down...", then she gagged and tipped the bottle to her lips again.
Granted, in all the excitement, I hadn't tasted it myself, but I felt the need to bring that fork to my lips and take it like a man, or she might physically assault me.
Well, she was right - like madam Curie, I'd discovered something truly lethal by accident.
I dashed for the fridge, grabbed the bottle of milk and downed it as fast as I could. Of course, with the amount of wine my wife had ingested without any food, she didn't feel the need to hold back at all.
"That's the worst after-taste in the world. I mean, ever, in all eternity. This tastes like the place happiness goes to die. Why do you hate happiness, Mort? Why? WHY?!"

I'm finally getting to the point:
This book will leave a worse after-taste in your mouth than my food. I've read some reviews and I do agree that this author writes broken humans very, very well. But it is dark, and the best advice I can give anybody who wants to read this, is to disconnect before you start, because it will mess with your emotions.
Very good story, but I don't know how many people will be able to handle it.

The Pitfalls of
Body Removal...

DIE TOMMY
by Aron Beauregard

No spoilers. 4 stars. Brutus and Tommy work together, removing dead bodies and transporting them to the morgue for the county coroner's office...

One day...

They were sent to remove the puffed up body of a man who had died in his home...

On a sweltering hot day...

The house did not have air conditioning, and the man, who had not been fat just a week ago according to later investigation...

... was now huge and putrid and leaking all over the floor where he died. His skin had become bloated and taut...

And finally...

... exploded and sloughed off, leaving the man's skeleton and innards covered with globs of white foul smelling, decaying fat cells...

To make matters worse...

Tommy slipped in the putrid mess, which had leaked onto the floor, and landed face-first in the dead man's slimy exposed belly fat...

And...

... lay there floundering for a few minutes, almost drowning in the foul substance...

Next morning...

Tommy didn't feel well. He complained of a headache and wasn't his usual jovial self, but had turned into a scary belligerent man...

... who had put on a few pounds overnight. Ah, the pitfalls of body removal can make for a bad day on the job...

This author writes very good extreme horror because his novellas are more than just blood and guts but have an actual well-thought-out storyline.

THE SLOB and SON OF THE SLOB by this author are also very good extreme horror stories. 🎃🎃🎃🎃

I really enjoyed the writing style here. It was fast paced, had shorter and easy to digest chapters, and included just enough detail to give you the full effect of a corpse, environment, gore and such, without going overboard. There are a few scenes that are enough to make you queasy, but nothing that I would consider anywhere near extreme horror or splatterpunk worthy. The story is much shorter than marketed, but includes a short story at the conclusion of Die, Tommy. The illustrations were fun and gave you some icky visuals to go along with this tale. I do feel that it took several chapters in to pick up, but then things really took off. The story was fun and had good intentions, but I felt certain parts were underdeveloped (the entire ending), while others had too much attention (the fourteen year old). The short story, Spin the Bottle, was also just ok. Again, it was a solid premise, but could have equally benefitted from having more done with it.

Another gripping and graphic novella by Aaron Beauregard, an author who is a master of description and extreme content. Brutus and Tommy pick up bodies for the coroner, and the causes of death are never less than horrific. One particular body is so badly decomposed that it leaves traces of something monstrous. The lingering aftereffects are just the beginning of this nightmare. In his own unique style, the author paints scenes of violence and grotesquerie that are impossible to unsee. Also, there are actual drawings to enhance the imagination. Die Tommy is a feast of dark and squirming images for all lovers of well-written extreme horror. The bonus story is a bang-up treat to complete this riveting book.

This was another fun read from Mr. Beauregard. In addition to the expected splattery goodness, were some well-crafted characters and great dialogue. I'm all about strong dialogue. There's nothing that disappoints me more than wooden, choppy, unnatural dialogue. Some of the earlier conversations between Tommy and Brutus are the best. The included illustrations are a nice touch, also. I'll be reading more works from the author for sure.

It didn’t take a heap of hard-nosed detective work on the part of the investigators to wonder who the mutilated flesh might belong to.

The pictures within this book are wonderful. It's been a while since I read a book that has a handful of pics to go with the text. And they fit the story perfectly. The last one was my fave. Don't want to spoil anything, but it involved a couch. Awesome!

The story itself started out kinda slow. I felt like the first couple of chapters were pretty much info dumping and character building. Which isn't a bad thing. It just took me a while to get into the story. Once the story started, it was pretty cool..there's gore, mystery, a decent plot, and likeable characters. Picking up dead bodies and taking them to the morgue sounds like a pretty cool job, until you read some of the stuff they're forced to see. One of the bodies they pick up in this story give them a bit more than they bargained for.
I recommend this book to people who like a storyline with a bit of gore.

I had a blast with this one. Aron has a good eye for storytelling, knowing what's important and what's not. Not too many people can toe that line for me.
For someone who loves books and reading as much as I do, I find I can become bored mid sentence of it's not going my way. I can flip on an author in a heartbeat and put the book down forever if they do the thing I think shouldn't have been done.
This was great and I can honestly say that I can see what all this fuss is about for the author. It's well deserved.

Good fast paced story. Was definitely an interesting read. With it being Beauregard's first book and having recently read his newest release, you can really see how he's grown as a writer since this release.

(Bulk review March 18 Since i read 7 books today, all of it's pretty short so it's not really that revolutionary review #6)

Now this just becomes to the point Where I really don't think that Aaron Would ever Write something That is at the same level as "playground" This story is just about two men who works at a Morgue, Experiencing some creepy and Supernatural but actually natural Things In a typical splatterpunk fashion. Nothing Revolutionary, Nothing that really stands out. And the competition is really Fierce Because So far I have already read 20+ splatterpunk books just this month therefore my standards are already set.

Brutus and Tommy work for the local Coroners office picking up badly decomposed dead bodies at various addresses around town and then taking them back to base for autopsy and then storage in the mortuary. Alester, their boss, loves nothing better than his boys collection of the new cadavers so that he can dissect them at leisure in order to discover the possible cause of death. That is, until they come across one particular client who's body displays unusual characteristics that suggest signs of unknown disease, coupled with devastating injury and mutilation. From that point on things for these three hombres will never quite be the same and the consequences for some just might change their lives forever.

Absolutely loved the style of the first part of the story which introduced the characters in detail, set the scene and provided a storyline full of promise and invention which culminated in the recovery, and official dismemberment, of their first unfortunate customer back at their department base.
After this point I felt that the story noticeably changed focus and became more of a traditional, OTT extreme horror fest, full of bloody treats and brutal abominations to satiate the hunger and thirst of all true lovers of gruesome splatter and devastating scenes of death and destruction. As always from Aron, fantastic detail and description of the full-on bloody, gore-filled action and cleverly worked plot, whilst also providing some fantastic lines of dialogue and narration that amused, thrilled and entertained. Also loved the ending that appealed to my admittedly warped sense of humour and which seemed to fit perfectly the circumstances and events previously outlined within the book.

A really good, thoroughly engaging read for all devotees of 'what you see is what you get' straight forward splatter horror and blood-filled gruesome outrage. Best enjoyed before eating!

Rating: 3.9 big red stars to be enjoyed with both Brutus and young Tommy, - die, die, die!

A full-tilt splatterpunk tale enhanced by genuine psychological insight.

Embittered alcoholic Brutus spends his days carting corpses with his annoyingly chipper colleague Tommy, until a chance encounter with tainted flesh transforms their relationship and sends them both down a rabbit hole of absolute horror.

This is a quick, gruesome read with much to recommend it. Beauregard is fast becoming one of my favorite extreme horror authors. His prose is stylish and fluid. His storytelling is informed by genuine insight, making the horror of his tales even more striking and compelling. Boring characters are a genuine plague on fiction of all stripes, but you won’t find any of them here. Beauregard’s protagonists are bursting with idiosyncratic thoughts, candid impulses, and raw emotions that make them feel as real as you or I. And as if the titular story wasn’t worth the price of admission alone, this book also contains an excellent bonus short story called 'Spin the Bottle.' Of course both of these stories are gruesome and not for the squeamish. But for those who like their horror intense and grotesque, Beauregard is an excellent choice!

Great read! A very unique and different novella from the standard horror fare. You don't have to read far for the first big gross out, that's a good thing. Very well written and entertaining, just like the author's other works. An excellent addition to any extreme horror library, enjoy!!!

Gruesome

This is a great gory, violent story, perfect for us extreme horror readers. The characters are easy to get to know with There descriptions and you learn quickly what the is going to entail as right from the start, the gore and horror begins. Loved Brutus , his character was one of not caring but then he shows a compassionate side at the same time. Great story with great characters and full of extreme horror. Perfect. Definitely recommend to those of you who enjoy this genre, but it isn't ideal for those whom are squeamish or easily offended. Otherwise fantastic read.

Having just finished reading The Slob, I was so impressed that I immediately dove into Aron's other novella Die Tommy. Once again, Beauregard knocks it out of the park. His ability to create flawed and realistic characters and wonderful dialogue really put him at the top of the pack. As well as descriptions of bloated flesh and sticky viscera. This is another wonderful little excursion down the splatterpunk/extreme horror road. In this case, a hot Arizona road that leads a couple of coroners to a corpse that is just bursting with something evil inside.

I am already reading thru Aron's short-story collections Hallucinations and Pizza Face and will be reviewing shortly so be on the lookout for those as well.

Also includes interior illustrations and a bonus short-story "Spin the Bottle".

5 out of 5 bedbugs.

Entertaining 😁

Enjoyed the well written chapters, believable characters and descriptive scenes. I love that it included pictures; I even chuckled quite a bit at the picture used in the pick up of the second corpse. Aron's writing style caused the "Die Tommy movie" to play nicely in my head, which made this book that much more pleasurable to read! *Adding: The "kiss of death" was awesome!
Now I need to decide which one of Aron's books to read next...

So, what did I think about this dive into depravity? Well, I gave this one five-stars! I really enjoyed the gore in this one, plus it shows a man’s decadence into craziness. I love the way Aron pens this story. His depictions were great and the way the man uses words was a treat! I’m not going to lie, this one made my stomach turn a few times!

If you didn’t gather from the synopsis what this story is about, then let me tell you now. It’s about Brutus, who is the main focal point of this story. His buddy, Tommy, has a mishap with a cadaver and becomes sick and ‘turns’ into someone he isn’t. This is a great splatterpunk tale, and definitely not for those with queasy stomachs.

Like I said before, Mr. Beauregard can write! Like, really well! And I highly recommend this to any fans of extreme horror!

So it has taken me a while to get to read one of Aron Beauregard's stories. There has been so much hype about this author - and I'm pleased to join the Aron fan club 100%. I thought the story was good, well crafted, the dialogue believable and his command of the English language masterful. Some of his choices of words were fantastic and the imagery he invoked was above par. My only tiny criticism was I felt he was head-hopping a bit - or maybe that was just me. Sometimes I thought I was reading it from Brutus's point of view than others it was Tommy. But as I said, this was minuscule and certainly didn't take away from a ripper of a story. I can't wait to get my teeth into his Splatterpunk Award-nominated one next, The Slob. And I'm going to save my pennies to buy signed paperbacks (I live in Australia) because Aron's covers and internal illustrations are superb and he's definitely set to be a future giant in this genre. 4.5 stars rounded up to a five.

Every once in a while, there's an artist that comes around and really impresses me. It's not super common. I've read a lot of "the greats" and classics in horror and I've also read some fantastic indie work. Having to promote a lot of my stories on Wattpad, I've spent an offensive amount of time following really tiny indie horror. Some work I encountered was fantastic in about every imaginable way, while other work has been complete and total garbage.

I met Aron Beauregard midway through 2020, not long after I opened my website and began promoting my first standalone short story, Seventh Circle. I discovered his work through my friend, Alexis Sundquist, who also has some pretty excellent work available to read. Aron had just released "Dark Assembly" and was really looking to make a name for himself. I had just lost my job and had next to no money at all. Somehow, Aron and I really hit it off and he ended up sending me a copy of "Dark Assembly." Not too long after, he released "Pizza Face'' for free and I read and reviewed that as well. Ever since reading those two collections, I've been a huge supporter of everything he's done. Regardless, it's important for me to be truthful with my reviews. When Aron releases a garbage book, I'll be one of the first people to tell him. This book? Not even close to garbage.

About a year before we met, he released his first collection, “Try The New Candy.” He followed that up with a novella, Die Tommy, and then his most famous work, “The Slob.” Then he developed his craft even further with Scary Bastard, then he released three incredible short story compilations in a row: “Pizza Face” ; ”Dark Assembly” and “Hallucinations.” He began 2021 by releasing a new novel, "Yellow." It's only February and he's begun promotion of a new collection called "Nightmare Nirvana." It probably seems pretty obvious that that man is extremely passionate and prolific. It also should be said that Aron has slowly progressed into a better writer. I've enjoyed all of his work so far, but the writing style differences between “Pizza Face” and “Hallucinations” are quite noticeable, even though they were both released in the same year.

"Die Tommy" was one of Aron's first releases. Like all of his work so far, it's brutal, fun, and fast-paced. Clocking in at just under 110 pages, it doesn't overstay its welcome. It's a pretty simple premise that I don't even need to bother explaining. The plot concept is actually very reminiscent of Stephen King. Sure, it doesn't throw a lot of unexpected punches, but the "lean forward'' moments are huge here. There are also a handful of drawings scattered around the piece that really accentuate certain moments. The black comedy here is also hilarious to me but I might be a little crazy.

If there's one thing that brings "Die Tommy" down, it's that there is something of an amateurish obtuse narrative voice going on. There are some sentences that are a little awkward in phrasing. One of my main compliments of Aron's writing in the past has been that he is a master of combining grotesque themes with really minimalistic writing that is easy and fun to read, all whilst not ever seeming dumb or pointless. This book feels a bit more unsure than his other work about how things should be written, so there are certainly some passages that seem hard to read. With only 110 pages to read, it's still painless to get through and really fun once you get used to the oddities of his somewhat undeveloped style. Me saying this doesn’t mean this book is awful or even slightly not good. I enjoyed the hell out of “Die Tommy.” Aron has always been about progression and developing his craft, so if anything, reading “Die Tommy” makes me appreciate how his artistic abilities have grown and changed with his later novels. Looking over his bibliography as a whole, “Die Tommy” can best be understood as planting the seeds for the insane awesomeness to come. A VERY worthy read.

My copy had a secret short story called "Spin The Bottle." It feels like a story that could've been in the "Pizza Face" collection. I won't spoil it but it's a nice little piece of flash fiction that is a decent contrast to “Die Tommy.” It’s very 1980’s in spirit.

Loads of fun!

Beauregard is quickly becoming one of my favorites. First The Slob, then Scary Bastard, and now Die Tommy. A true trio of deprived thoughts from a great story teller.

When an M.E is involved with a pharmaceutical cover up, your wildest imagination won't prepare you for what you'll read. As always this twisted story is accompanied by awesome artwork throughout.

Yet another fun read I have to recommend!
