Moving to a new state means more than a new house for nine-year-old Katie and her family. There are new friends, a new neighborhood, and fun things to do. It also means new challenges for Katie—she’s a “little big sister” to her older brother, Mikey, who has autism. And while most of her new friends are understanding, some people—even grown-ups—just don’t “get it” about autism. Katie and her friends, both old and new, are ready to spread the word and make a difference in Katie’s new community. This is book 2 in the Little Big Sister series.
Amy McCoy is a former elementary school teacher who loved writing stories for her students so much, she became a children’s book author. Now, instead of having her own classroom, she appears in schools around the country both in person and on screens as a visiting author. Amy is a mom who finds inspiration for her books from watching her own two children interact with the world. Her award-winning children’s novel series, Little Big Sister, is read in third grade classrooms across the USA. Katie Finds Her Voice: A Story About Autism is a prequel to this chapter book series. When she’s not writing her books or presenting in elementary schools about autism acceptance, you can find Amy practicing yoga, riding her bike, singing along to her favorite songs, or reading books (both with and without pictures) in her backyard. Amy lives in New York with her family.
A fabulous book for all children but especially those with siblings on the autism spectrum.
ADD THIS BOOK TO YOUR CHILD'S/STUDENT'S SUMMER READING LIST!
Amy McCoy does it again with the next book in the Little Big Sister series.
Katie and her brother Mikey have moved house, which is hard for a kid at the best of times, but when your brother has autism you have a whole new neighborhood that needs to get to know your brother and his 'odd' ways- saying everything three times, flapping, making noises etc.
Amy takes us gently through Katie's embarrassment at some of the situations Mikey gets into, whilst simultaneously showing us a girl who is determined to help raise awareness for autism in her new community.
Fans of the first book will be pleased with the reappearance of some old friends and still enjoy all the new people Katie and Mikey meet. Little Big Sister on the Move is set with the backdrop of the summer vacation period, which makes this a timely release.
I recommend it to all those looking for a teaching and supportive read for their kids. Thank you to Amy McCoy for her books that let siblings know they are not alone and gives them a voice in their schools and communities.
