Sachi and Makie help Makie’s fake next door neighbour find a place she thinks she remembers, then monsters attack, new characters are introduced and I read this book less than 8 hours ago so why can’t I remember any of it?
A slight exaggeration, I do remember some of it, but large chunks of this book have just slid from my memory into nothingness, leaving behind a vague sense of boredom and dissatisfaction.
Inconsistency is part of it. I have no idea what, precisely, the rules of the creatures showing up actually are beyond ‘Makie smells good and they want him’. And I don’t think the book does either - it keeps throwing things up whenever it needs a new wrinkle. That one MacGuffin that looks like a piece of broccoli (you can’t unsee that, I assure you) is something else.
The first story suffers from this exact problem, but it’s actually pretty sweet because it deals with the problem of your memories when you’re a fabricated spirit being and is very sweet and kind, even as all sorts of lore flies around it. I don’t mind vague lore, per se, but I do mind when it just keeps piling up on itself with hardly a chance to breathe.
I think that’s where I come down on this volume - as usual, its heart is in the right place, but its head is up its ass. We have a perfectly unique heroine in Sachi, who’s interesting because she’s both larger than the norm and trying to learn to be a better person, so why do we need to throw in hyper ninja high school uniform sword girl? Short answer - we don’t.
The threat posed by the last creature is interesting and makes for some good visuals, but again, I was having such a hard time following all this and the vanishing parent trope rears its head and I just couldn’t even.
And when I said this series was way too fond of having Sachi’s breasts mashed around Makie’s face, little did I know that he’d end up spending pretty much an entire chapter stuffed inside her t-shirt. Utterly ridiculous.
2.5 stars, maybe, I guess. Compared to the very, very sweet previous volume this is leaning hard into the things I couldn’t care less about in the series. A very diminished return on this volume and I’ll see if I can muster the enthusiasm for another.
CLIFFHANGER ヾ( ̄O ̄)ツ I need to know what happens next!!
This volume was a bit more ecchi than the previous ones, but still toed the line perfectly to keep me interested. I absolutely loved the amped up level of the monsters, especially the super creepy humans-turned-into-vegetation scenes. Plus, we get a few new characters and a glipse of another watari form (Tatemochi's - very cool!) and some actual loss (ಥ﹏ಥ) but we'll see if it's permanent.
Again this manga continues to be a fantastic series that I throughly enjoying. I think that everything is fair paced and my questions are being answered. Looking forward to the next one
Every 15 yo boy's dream girl. And now, with 100% more bigger monsters!
I mean, every teenage boy dreams about a super hot senpai that is also secretly a creature from another dimension, right? It's the stuff dreams are made of. However, things get very real, and very serious, towards the end of the volume. First though, Makie and Sachi accompany Izumi as she tries to find the restaurant from her fragmented memory. Looks like a wild goose chase, until a friendly (?) Bird-like Watari steps in and helps. Turns out there's some serious time between now and when Izumi had the events her memory shows. Still, the kind Watari shows them where the shop USED to be. So Maki and Sachi decide to help Izumi make NEW memories! They go to a noodle shop, and they all have fun, and suddenly the ethereal form of Izumi's Mother appears. So now Izumi is ready to move forward. Later, Sachi's school is having their cultural festival, and Sachi's class elected to do the tried and true maid cafe. Through a series of events, Makie finds himself also wearing a maid outfit, and helping out. Then, after Sachi and Makie go on break, Makie's Dad shows up, and so does a HUGE Watari! We are introduced to new characters, and Miss Manager takes one for the team! Will she live to see another day? Who knows? We get left on a big cliffhanger, with Makie, Sachi, Miss Maid, and the new friends ready to beat down the massive Watari attacking the school. I eagerly look forward to the next volume.
Holy shit, fucking hell, I was coasting through this volume thinking, "oh isn't that nice! Starting off with some slice-of-life! Oh, that's cool! We get some action!" Then BAM! The last three chapters occur and suddenly I'm like, "what the actual FUCK, I did NOT sign up for this horror shit, but I'm here for it!" Damn, those last three chapters hit like a truck and I'm horrified and devastated, but in a good way.
This was another amazing volume that packs a much stronger emotional punch than the last two, but damn it's worth it. Please stop sleeping on this series, it's so good.
Enjoyed this volume for the most part but the action panels are extremely hard to make out. I don’t know if it’s the thick black used or the panel layouts, so confusing at times. What I do love are all the characters personalities and the storyline. This could be a basic romcom with a monster girlfriend but it’s deeper then that. I’m looking forward to the next volume.
This volume had some really good monster design and story elements. I find that the story is a little hard to follow at times but it is building and progressing at a good pace.
