description

Before becoming a writer, Linsey was an archaeologist who studied shipwrecks in all kinds of water, from the tropics to muddy rivers (and she has a distinct preference for one over the other). After a decade of tromping around in search of old bits of stuff, she settled down to start penning her own adventure novels and is freaking delighted that people seem to like them. Since life is better with a little (or a lot of) magic, she writes urban fantasy and paranormal romance.

The last book about Claire ends in stupendous style. I've been thoroughly entertained not to mention surprised by Claire as her personal story went in directions I never expected. Honestly when she was mentioned in previous stories I never had a clue that one she was hiding and two she was a Fae. Having been banished by the Fire Fae both Claire and her brother Connor have created a new life with amazing friends but now learning about her connection to the Fae King Iain not to mention that she's apparently reincarnated this has truly been a series that I couldn't predict.
A lot of this book features Dartmoor in England and its a place I know well and I feel with its creepy atmosphere not to mention spooky reputation it was the perfect setting for this story. Oh there's still a lot of Darklane and its unusual inhabitants and of course it wouldn't be a Ms Hall story without an adventure that encompasses historical/ mythological background and I loved her horseman and flying swords but my lips are sealed. Best of all though I really enjoyed the way this ended as I hadn't previously been that convinced by the big bad darkness but Claire really made light of the situation and yes pun intended ! So it ends here but apparently there might be a novella featuring Connor but as to what the author intends next I've no idea but I'm pretty sure I will be keen to read it.
This voluntary take is of an advanced copy and my thoughts and comments are honest and I believe fair

Lots of plot devices

My rating is mostly for the entire series as if I were to rate just this book it would probably only be 2 stars. While the storyline was great, full of potential with all the different fantasy characters (some that pop up randomly with no previous introduction) the story itself fell a bit flat to me.

The relationships between characters in these books isn't developed much, or in some cases at all. Perhaps if I had read the authors previous series I would have cared a bit more about the supporting cast but this is my first series by this author and as such I didn't have any great investment in most of the characters. And honestly, I didn't have much investment in the main character either as she seemed to be a walking cliche. She was supposedly really smart but then would overlook glaringly obvious things. She was fated to the Sea Fae King but kept second guessing how authentic their affection for each other was because they are "fated mates". They don't spend much time developing any real relationship beyond two people who overcome trials together and there was never any real bond created except, well... we're fated mates so of course we're perfect for each other. Even her "best friends" weren't very well developed and I saw no real bond and had no understanding of what made these characters her best friends. After all, in book one she can't talk to them because of (what amounts to) a geas and then when the reason for that is over (her fated mate who hunted her becomes her greatest ally) there is no conversation where she explains all she wasn't able to explain before, no time spent building up this friendship at all even, save for them sitting around in her and her brother's coffee shop/bar. And then there is her brother, I was invested in this relationship as it was explored much more than any other in the first two books and yet they hardly even have a real in-depth conversation at all in this final book. She doesn't even tell him what she really is and what the entire purpose of her existence is meant to be. Nor does she tell her perfectly fated mate.

These things, added to the (at times) extremely convenient plot devices, served to make this a bit of a chore to read. The whole series seemed to go very directly and in the quickest way possible from point to point to point. Or rather problem to problem to problem, each one being followed up with a quick and easy (and sometimes downright unrealistic-or far too convenient) solution. Her familiar seems to serve as a very convenient plot device time after time. This series seemed far too full of them. Duex ex machina (x 20.) It was really disappointing because with a bit more detail, a few extra chapters, this could've been a really epic story.

I had hoped the ending would give some further glimpse into the other characters and into the main characters lives but that was not to be. In fact, the ending, in keeping with the theme of the entire series, was entirely too quick and neatly wrapped up. In an effort to not divulge any spoilers I'll just say that the way things were going in the last great battle made it obvious there was going to be yet another plot device that wrapped everything up neatly and kept you from feeling any real emotion, and indeed there was.

Honestly though, even if there hadn't been I can't say I'd have been too affected anyway considering the very shallow character building and relationship development leading up to the climax, if it can even be called that. Which is sad because there was some seriously cool imagery and awesome sounding characters! That got introduced in the last half of the book that we heard about not at all previously... If only the author had explored that a little more. It's clear she has a great imagination but equally as clear this book was rushed. ("Realm of darkness"... Really? That's the best name you could come up with?)

And finally, the editing... My goodness. She actually thanked her editor and I wonder why because this and the previous two books are full of errors and typos, so much so it was distracting. But I digress. I gave this 3 stars because the story line was still a good one and the amount of research that went into it is clear, the author used actual sites to inspire her, and honestly, the authors note at the end on ancient artifacts was informative enough to earn a star. So while this is definitely not a series I'll ever read again I may see what else the author has to offer (and hope she gets a new editor) with the additional hope that she'll eventually get into her stories with a bit more depth in the future.

All in all, if you're looking for a quick and easy fantasy story to read you've found it. If you're looking for a story that's more evolved and complex to invest in, move along. I suggest The Otherworld Series by Emma Hamm. In fact I may go re-read those myself now.

Claire couldn't control the darkness inside her and it wouldn't allow her to talk to any of her friends so she decided to find Aethelred. He managed to help her drove back the darkness by blasting it with light, but it would soon return. Aethelred said that to control her power, she needed the fire fae's crown of flame and that the darkness wanted to burn her homeland so it could steal the fae's life-force, making it stronger. And of course, there would be a great battle in the end, where all of her friends would be there (the author managed to make battles into boring stuff). Right when she was about to leave, she found Iain right in front of Aethelread's front door, and because she couldn't explain what happened to her, Aethelred explained for him.

Then he took her to P&P and explained to Connor and firesouls what happened. He gave her a potion that could dampened the darkness' influence and after that, Claire, Iain, Connor, and Cass decided to go to the Court of Flame to get the crown. They snuck in and knocked out the guards and the king and queen, gave them the potion that drove back the darkness inside them, and asked for where the crown was. But the king and queen said that the crown was stolen long ago so they only showed them the place where the crown used to be placed so Cass could use her seeker sense to find it. They arrived to some kind of massive mansion in the middle of nowhere but it was protected by deathly fog.

Before they could approach, Cass was called by Nix, who screamed for help because she and Del was captured. So after Connor took some sample of the fog and Cass told them the Crown was up in the tower, they left while Iain and Claire made out. Connor called, saying that the fog would dissipate for a minute on the first ray of sun, that's where they had to cross or it would kill them. So they rested and the next day, they immediately crossed it. Of course the house was hunted and full of danger, but they managed to get to the tower. In there, they found a brooch that called to her because it had the same darkness as one inside her. When she touched it, it showed her the vision of the past, where she first drove back the darkness by putting it inside the brooch with all her life force, and then she died.

She returned to the present, took the brooch and the crown, got attack again, and they both escaped back to Iain's castle and then she wore the crown, which transported her back to her 'godly realm', welcomed by other elemental gods. They said she was the elemental god of light, but she was not immortal like them. She was created to defeat the darkness when she was just a fae baby, so she was kind of destined to reborn just to defeat it whenever it arises. And the brooch was actually the thing that controlled her power so she had to fix it so she could control it by going to the god of mentalsmith.

She want to his place, he fixed it, and it became one with her. He said she was destined to die when she killed the darkness, but she said she would proof him wrong (of course she would live this time). Then the battle came, all of her friends came and they teleported to the evil darkness' lair. They found the darkness and Nix and Del in a cage, and they witnessed the darkness killed Nix and Del with a touch. Cass was furious and attacked the darkness, but it killed her too. Soon, most of Claire's friend died (including Connor and Iain), their life force were stolen, until she got this idea to embrace the darkness because light couldn't shine without darkness (this book was based on a very cliche quote omg).

After she took in all of the darkness inside her, she felt her friend's life force and returned them (of course none of them would die), the battle ended, and she didn't die. The king, queen, and the gods were impressed and they celebrated it. The end, classic, boring happy ending.

For me the weakest book of the trilogy although we get some answers. I had to read chapter for chapter with different activities in between to get myself to finish. A bad sign already.
Now to the content. After reading three books by Linsey Hall I've got the feeling that all her books get written according to the same structure. The main characters have to find some powerful thing, go look for it through many dangers and finish with a battle. Boring. At least when it's repeated over and over again. I had planned to read another one of her series but now that I know about that pattern that other readers confirmed I'm not so sure anymore.
Also I didn't feel the romance at all. You keep waiting for it to go forward and when it finally happened it's totally lame. Book 1 still had some emotional tension because of the I-have-to-kill-my-fated-mate conflict but there was nothing throughout book 2 as a whole and nothing here either. When an author makes readers wait so long for the couple to get together you would expect something bigger but again: nothing. It felt completely random. That is not what I had signed up for when I picked up the series.
Now I did like what we found out about Claire's powers and past here but on the other hand I absolutely predicted her final move
Bottom line, it was just not enough. I'll be thinking long and hard before picking up another series by that author.

PS: The covers were gorgeous, at least the first two. This one can't hold up at all.

Victory is sweet ... until it’s found to not yet be victory at all. Queen of Light is another exciting installment (book 3) of Linsey Hall’s The Forbidden Fae series. Some pretty amazing, and unexpected twists for Claire and her brother Connor. A perfect plot that ends things perfectly with a plot that’s superbly executed and filled with a wonderfully crafted supporting cast (with special mention to Iain). Totally fun ... and totally recommended.

Amazing conclusion

I love all the connected Dragon's Gift series. Claire has always been a strong character wondering her vulnerability in this series made her more to me. I dreaded an unhappy ending so I was happy that my fears were in vain.

Dragon's Gift: The Forbidden Fae books 1-3

Another gripping series by this author who has become one of my favourites. Lindsey draws you into her fantasy world and you are soon staying up all hours to see what happens next.

My only criticism is the editing, especially the constant use of "going to go" ... (you wouldn't say "coming to come"!) So please, whoever is editing, do your job properly and correct this in future as it drives me insane....

Ok..

I loved the first two books. Absolute genius. This one fell flat for me because of a few reasons. First, I wanted more of Claire and Iain's relationship that had really started to blossom in the second book. Second, it really irked me that she didn't clue in her mate/friends/brother about who she was and what she would potentially have to do. Especially her brother. Which brings me to my third point. Connor took a huge backseat in this book, and part of that I understand. However the closeness of their brother/sister relationship was one of the things I adored in the first book and in this one she didn't even trust him with this secret. Lastly, the ending. It felt wrong. Battles are not won without true sacrifice, brutal and harrowing. I just felt like all this build up and it was too simple. And finally, there were quite a few added characters at the end that I had no idea who they were. Just boom they're there and fighting. Now I love the author using inspiration from real places to influence scenes and people in the book. I think that is genius and adds another depth of character to the book.I really wish that it would have loved up to the first two books, and honestly it makes me feel terrible to write a review like this but it is honest.

LOVED THIS!

This amazing ending to Claire's trilogy was fantastic! I loved the amazing battle at the end. The end of the battle was the best part. Maybe a teeny bit cheesy, but I'm so very glad it was! Some things just shouldn't ever happen and I'm not saying more about it because it would give too much away. The love story between Caera and Iain was so sweet and fierce! So much passion and I'm not referring to the bedroom variety, but true passion. And Claire's willingness to make the ultimate sacrifice if necessary but determination to find another way was nothing short of awesome. I know I'm all over the place here, but really, no spoilers. Just read this. You'll be glad you did.

I'm actually sad that the Dragon's Gift series will be coming to an end with the next novella but I understand. After all of the characters have had their books where do you go but forward on to something else.

From Magic's Bend to the underworld, to the Nevada dessert to Scottish Highlands with the Protectorate (and the places they went) to the various lands of the fae Linsey Hall has taken us on a wonderful ride through adventure after adventure. From the bottom of my heart, thank you Linsey.

I am sad as this is the last book in this universe for a while and of course the last book in this series. I am glad, though, that we are going to start something new. I’ve been in a kind of a reading slump of sorts. I really like what I’m reading, but I am unsatisfied. Anyway, on to this book, this is probably the best ending of the series lately. Claire gets her ending, and I loved the way it ended. We find out what she is finally, and of course the ride there is full of action, great writing, and fun. I still don’t think I knew Claire as much as I would have liked, but I did so much enjoy her series. This was a great conclusion, and I can’t wait to see what the author has coming up next. Recommend! I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.

Hall is back

The third and final entry in Claire's story brings Linsey Hall back to the top of her game.

In this story, fear of losing all of her friends, her brother, her mate as well as her life, Claire must battle the darkness within and without. With the help of Iain, her fated mate, they set off on a quest to find the answers to save the kingdom and all Claire loves.

It was great to see all of the gang back together, the dragongods, the fire souls, Mari and Aeri, as well as all of their mates. This has been a wonderful world to visit, and of course, Hall always drops real world treasures in her fantasy.

Looking forward to Connor ' s story. After that? Linsey Hall's imagination is set to go.

Linsey Hall is Amazing!

What do I love the most about reading Linsey’s books?

The authenticity she brings, along with the fantasy. Her Author’s Notes bring an even deeper dimension to her storytelling. I anxiously await each book, because she tells such fabulous tales, but truly enjoy the archeological components she brings in from her vast travels.

This was a book that somewhat finalizes a story thread, that I will truly miss. But I know that in the future, Linsey will continue to write amazing books and bring spectacular ancient finds along for us to enjoy,

Linsey, Thank you for sharing with us ALL of your amazing heroines and their mates!!!

Great Series

This is the last book in the series, and although I haven’t yet to have written reviews of the first two books I had to write this one. Fantasy is one of my favorite genres and this series is no disappointment. The writing quality is great; you’re drawn immediately into Claire’s world and you feel right at home. The character building is quite good, and although I thought I might have wanted to see some characters fleshed out a little more, apparently it’s my entire fault that I don’t know already them! They have previous series written of their own. The editing is great and I think I have a new favorite author to catch up on and follow!

I hope Hall writes another book that shows the FireSouls canvassing that mansion!

Like Claire said to Puka, I too say to myself whilst writing this review: “You’re nitpicking.” I’ve thoroughly enjoyed this series even though I’ve felt like it’s a little unoriginal. My head might just be in the wrong pace for this series, but it is a really good story! Looking back, it has a lot of originality and I’m glad I read it! Go Claire and Iain! And Puka! Never forget the animal familiars that Hall’s books are famous for! My favorite part was when everyone gathered for the final battle. I love seeing past characters I’ve fallen in love with gather to fight together. Great job!

Edge of your seat

Ok I really loved this book, the tension was both sexual and of good against evil, both equally exciting.
I didn't enjoy sleep that crept up and stopped me reading (recovering from Welsh and DKA) but whilst I was awake this book of danger and risk really kept me from feeling sorry for myself
I just loved Claire's story from word go, I had no idea how things would turn out, I was so glad the ending went the way I'd wanted it too
I'd more than happily recommend this book and the whole series, look up the author and start the adventures from the very beginning so you get to know everyone and all the connections, the loyalty and the binding secrets

Great series!

Original concepts and wonderful, full-bodied characters! I've read all of this author's series and enjoyed each and every one! She dedicates each separate series to an individual character's story. All tie into each other and are recognizable throughout the entire series but it's the focus of each series on the development of a chosen person that really let's this series blossom beyond expectations! They're fast-paced but not frantic and will definitely leave you wanting more. The great news is that THERE IS MORE!!!!

Queen of Light

I chose four out of five stars because I think the book was shorter than the others, especially since Claire's story only had three books instead of five. That said....... I did enjoy Queen of Light very much. I am looking forward to Conner's novella. This entire series from start with Del, Nix, and Cass thru Claire has been a fantastic ride/read and I loved every one of them. I do hope there will be other stories in this great adventure! Thanks Linsey Hall!!

AMAZING!!

So, this is the first time I have ever posted a review because I was so addicted to these books that I downloaded the next right away and read them. I am thoroughly impressed with Linsey and her amazing books from the start as firesoul Cass and her sisters to the fearsome dragongods Bree, Ana, and rowan, the scary sexy dragon bloods Aredeca and Mordaca. I loved that Claire had her time to shine, so excited to see Connors journey. Thanks for the amazing series Linsey, I am and always be a loyal reader!!!!!!

Fantastic ending

This has been a great series and it’s a shame to see the dragon gift series coming to an end when the last one comes out about Connor I’ll probably read from the beginning with Cas’ story.

This book ended the story based around Dartmoor in true Linsey fashion with every one coming together to fight evil in one form or another. In this case the evil is darkness.

Linsey Hall gives us a book to end Claire's story that is heartfelt, courageous and full of action.
Claire needs answers about her past to help save her future and that of her friends and her kingdom. As her feelings for Ilian grow the darkness is held back by a potion from her brother Connor.
She will risk it all to save everyone from the evil darkness including her life.
This book and series will keep you riveted and lose sleep because it is so good.

I am very much a fan of The Forbidden Fae trilogy. Not to say that I am not a fan of Linsey's other books, because I am, but there is something about the speed of the trilogy that I really enjoyed and it really made the time crunch of Claire's situation seem even more tense. As Claire races to find a way to be whole and make herself 'more' she also faces difficult decisions regarding the involvement of her friends and risk that entails.

Great conclusion to Claire's story. Interesting involvement of heroes from previous stories. The number of things that I was delightfully unable to predict was astounding. I wonder what could possibly follow this.

Action-packed. Easy-to-read. Entertaining. Inspirational. Scary. Tear-jerker. Twisted. Unpredictable. Wonderful characters.

I received a copy of this book as a gift.  This is my honest review.

Great read as always

This is a really good read. I gave it four stars just because the ending seemed so rushed compared to other books Ms. Hall has written. I do suggest reading the authors noted and I wonder if after Connor's novella if this is the end of this wonderful world Ms. Hall has created. I definitely recommend this series to any who love supernatural stories that have happy endings.

Let me start off by saying that the ending to this one gutted me and put me back together in just a few pages! Linsey’s writing is flawless and the world she creates sucks you in like no other! I am very happy with the way things ended for Claire/Caera and Ian. They fought hard in this book and it was so fun to get cameos from all the previous characters and their mates. Bravo on a job well done with this one! Highly recommend this series! It’s awesome!

Queen of Light is as good as the rest

Ok
Spoiler alert

I figured that the light and darkness could merge
Plus there was a foretelling when talking to the elementals, just enough

On the author’s note, yup, l love Paris and all the museums, however, all that lovely art (including statues and manuscripts) all in one county makes it easy to compare and contrast, however, seeing these items where they truly belong is an excellent idea!
