John Jeremy Thorpe (29 April 1929 – 4 December 2014) was a British politician who served as Liberal Member of Parliament for North Devon from 1959 to 1979, and as leader of the Liberal Party between 1967 and 1976. In May 1979 he was tried at the Old Bailey on charges of conspiracy and incitement to murder, arising from an earlier relationship with Norman Scott, a former model. Thorpe was acquitted on all charges, but the case, and the furore surrounding it, ended his political career.
Read this after watching the BBC dramatisation ‘A Very English Scandal.’ I thought that some of the details in the dramatisation were over zealously added for comic effect but they all turn out to be true! Aside from the sensationalism of the case, I found the dramatisation and Waugh’s book fascinating in terms of showing how societal attitudes to class, politicians and homosexuality have changed.
Parts were so uninteresting and others were of some interest. The beginning giving a summary of the whole thing was the best part so it could have been told in these 32 pages. I have little interest in this kind of stuff but i do remember reading about it at the time of the trial when i was in DC and there were lots of rumors about the possible involvement of americans in the whole cover up or what ever you want to call it. The author did bring some humor into the trial which i liked.
