I would like to thank Netgalley and the publisher for an advance copy in exchange for an honest review. I read the first volume and enjoyed it so I requested the second. While I thought it was cute and enjoyed the drawings, I liked the first volume more than the second one. I would still like to read future volumes though.

Informative ~ Age-appropriate ~ Accurate
tl; dr: Kids learn about butterflies.

This book feels a little manufactured, or like when someone sneaks vegetables in brownies. It has that "it's good for you vibe." If you get over that, it does give really solid information about extinction and butterflies. I get the feeling this would be ideal in a school setting when a teacher needs to assign science reading for common core and students are reticent to read.

3.5

Thanks to NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This book was received as an ARC from Papercutz in exchange for an honest review. Opinions and thoughts expressed in this review are completely my own.

I absolutely loved the drawings in this book because of their cartoon-like execution. They really exemplified the girls and their mission to save the bumble bees and Monarch Butterflies from extinction. They are found by the local news and when they discover a secret garden filled with bees and monarchs, their lives are changed forever. Their sidekick cat, goes out and searches the garden but then later discovers the real reason the bees and monarchs disappear, he gets catnapped and it's up to the 5 girls to rescue him. This was such an enjoyment and delight to read and I know our young readers will go crazy for this.

We will consider adding this title to our JGraphicNovel collection at our library. That is why we give this book 5 stars.

The girls are studying pollinators at school - including Monarch caterpillar life cycles. They find an abandoned lot behind the school that has weeds in that the butterflies and bees like. They are upset that it is going to get turned into a convenience store. In the end, the school receives a charitable donation to build a rooftop garden.

Miss 7 enjoyed. Plot is a little heavy handed. It could have aimed for the practical solution of having a nature walk / garden at the school first (the rooftop solution is an interesting one although more expensive) or done a seed drive - encouraging families at the school to plant pollinating plants at home (though that would depend on how suburban / urban the town is).

Miss 7 and I like to explore different books and authors at the library, sometimes around particular topics or themes. We try to get different ones out every week or so; it's fun for both of us to have the variety and to look at a mix of new & favourite authors.

'Geeky Fab 5 Vol. 2: Mystery of the Missing Monarchs' by Liz Lareau and Lucy Lareau with illustrations by Ryan Jampole is a graphic novel about some young ladies interested in science.

This time around the 5 are looking in to why butterflies and bees are missing. When they find a vacant lot with caterpillars, they think it's a nice place to play and watch the bugs. When the lot is threatened by someone who wants to clear it and develop it, the girls realize the butterflies will lose a habitat and have to come up with a plan.

I think this is a pretty good series for young readers and the characters have some appeal. I liked the subject matter and found the art fine for the reading level.

I received a review copy of this graphic novel from Papercutz and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this graphic novel.

The geeky fab five comes out of normal Illinois. They are a group of girls that really get into geeky things like robotics, science, butterflies, etc., In book 2 the girls find a garden space beside their school full of native plants and things that grow. The kids learn in school that butterflies and bees are endangered and they get into making and creating a habitat for birds and bees, so they continue to populate their community. But when a dastardly person buys their little park to turn it into convenience store, it’ll be up to the girls to figure out how to have a park, butterflies, and the convenience store. This book was strong on facts, long on words, and has fun illustrations. This book was not as good as the first one, but I like the girls in steam and the appreciation of education.

Three and a half stars.

After such a STEM-tastic opener, the second book in this series of original graphic novels for the under-twelves features the girls interested in monarch butterflies, and their diminishing habitat. Habitat like a wondrous garden cum playground they suddenly find behind their school. Surely that's not going to be on the endangered list any time soon, though? Cooperation, science, finding smarts sexy and so on are once more to the fore in this book, but again it's a little weak on plot – the baddy is incredibly obvious, for one. The cross-species thought bubbles are lame, and the voice-over is a little too omniscient if it's one of the titular gang. But the target audience of young women will certainly enjoy it.

I actually won book 4 in this series in a Goodreads Giveaway, so I am making sure to read the first three books before I delve into it. I am not usually a graphic novel reader but I have begun reading a few here and there that I call "the smart ones," so I was glad these fit the bill. I had no idea a cat might want to eat bugs and caterpillars. Is that really a thing? And I had heard a little bit about the troubles our pollinators are having, so this was useful in further explaining that dilemma. I especially liked the teamwork, and I did "figure it out" but they did a good job leading and then wrapping it up too.

This screams girl power, team work, strong capable children, environment consciousness, positive outlook on school, and so so much more.

The message is positive and accurate without an info dump. The age this is intended for and younger can grasp what is happening, and compare this to our real world.

I did not read Vol. 1, but this was great alone. I didn’t feel like I had missed anything.

Also, side note... an online order has been submitted for tons of Milkweed seeds, my family will be plating them this spring.

When it comes to graphics for a comic book, I'm always picky but when I saw this come up on my recommend page, I was kind of not sure about requesting the book, but I did anyway because I'm all for reviewing books for kids. I just wanted to say I really enjoyed this. the graphics are amazing and the storyline for the geeky fab 5 is amazing. I'm all for the power of girls and not backing down when someone says no. Glad to see one that is for kids.

This one is actually better than the first, because I liked the story about protecting the monarch and bee habitats. I don't know if it's as simple as the solution they came up with but I also think that the girls are doing what they can within their means. They aren't changing the world, but they are making a difference in their own way.

Graphic novel
Continues the story of these five friends. This time they're trying to protect a monarch garden from a developer building a convenience store. The protect the earth theme comes through clearly. Plot is predictable but the characters are likeable. The scenes and people are well drawn.

I picked this up this morning, as a little Sunday morning read, before we went out.
It's a cute little graphic novel, about five friends, plus their cat, who are studying monarch butterflies in school, and find a hidden garden where they live and thrive.
But the area is scheduled to be flattened, and a convince store is to be built in its place.
It's down to the Geeky f@b 5 to put a stop to it and save the butterflies!
🦋
Yes, this is obviously aimed at much younger readers, but it was fun, different, to my usual kind of book, and i enjoyed reading it. If I were the target audience age, I would have learnt quite a bit from this, and have gone to school, and asked my teachers what we can do to help.

The Geeky Fab 5 are on a mission to save the bees and butterflies. When a convenience store is scheduled to be built behind the elementary school destroying the insects food and habitat, the Geeky Fab 5 must come up with a way to save the day! The girls protest the bull dozing of the garden behind their school but when that does not work, they are able to come up with an alternative solution. Empowered protagonists, science, and problem solving all come together in this graphic novel perfect for elementary school students.

This was a great sequel! Kudos to all the people who helped to make this book what it is. I'm still so astounded that there is a graphic novel with a heap of amazing, smart and positive girls that are into science. I loved that this book brought us a bit more into Lucy's passion: the environment. And I love how we still get names of so many women throughout history who really don't get the recognition they deserve. I know this is only just the sequel but I really do want a little bit more backstory and insight to each character and their families. We did get a little background with A.J's family which i really enjoyed but I still feel like we are just reading the surface of these characters.

I have got to say one of the highlights in this book is the many adventures of Humble the cat and he's definitely a strong contender for my favourite character.

I'd definitely recommend this series to every family, school and library as it has the potential to be quite an educational series which so many lovable characters.

*Received an ARC from publishers however this does not sway my opinion at all.

Geeky Fab 5 Vol. 2 is a great story about 5 elementary school girls who take a stand against a convenience store set to be built on a bee and butterfly sanctuary. The girls are smart, creative, and find ways to solve a problem when things don't go their way.

What I loved most about the graphic novel was the overall positive tone as well as the pleasing illustrations. I would recommend this book to 2nd-5th grade students, especially girls who are into STEM!

Thank you to NetGalley and Papercutz for the opportunity to read this e-ARC!
