Girl on the Run

Rate this book
A fast-paced original paperback thriller about a girl who discovers that her mother might not be who she says she is . . . and now someone is hunting them both.

Katelyn wants the best for her widowed mom. Surprising her with an online dating profile seems like a good idea.

It isn't. Katelyn's mom hasn't just been acting overprotective all these years--she's been hiding something. And now that anyone can find them online, Katelyn is in a desperate race against time to uncover the secrets of the past--not only her mom's, but also her own.

As Katelyn's world unravels, she begins to trust the guy who brought this nightmare to her door and to doubt the one person she never thought she would. Because her mom has been hiding for a reason: she's been waiting.

Abigail Johnson was born in Pennsylvania. When she was twelve, her family traded in snowstorms for year-round summers and moved to Arizona. Abigail chronicled the entire cross-country road trip in a purple spiral-bound notebook that she still has, and has been writing ever since. She became a tetraplegic after breaking her neck in a car accident when she was seventeen, but hasn’t let that stop her from bodysurfing in Mexico, writing and directing a high-school production of Cinderella, and riding roller coasters every chance she gets. She is the author of several young adult novels including If I Fix You and Every Other Weekend.

This book is one of the nominees for the MASL (Missouri Association of School Librarians (MASL) Gateway Award (books of interest for 9-12 grade students). I love a good thriller so I decided to check this one out. The plot centers around a mother and daughter who have kept to themselves over the years. Katelyn is seventeen and decides to help her mother (Melissa) get back into the dating world by setting up an online profile on popular site. Before she knows it, Katelyn is on the run with her world turned upside down. Things escalate quickly and she must enlist a hacker named Malcolm to help her to navigate this new world. The action sequences come hard and fast and people get hurt. The pain is real. I was intrigued by the mystery from the past and inspired by the mother-daughter bond. If I could, I would vote for this one.

CW:

Well that was a quick and simple YA mystery.

It jumped straight into the action as Katelyn and her mother flee their home with pursuers hot on their heels. I liked the premise and it was a fast-paced action centered around a dark family secret. Most people know I dislike 'out of place' romances and this book had quite a significant one but that is just a matter of taste. However, to be sure it was me and not the book I consulted with my kids. My daughter felt that including a romance definitely made a book more interesting to her and my son didn't care as long as it's not "cringe-inducing". The story was a bit formulaic and for that reason I think it would be good for NZ Year 9 students looking for a light mystery with just enough tension and action to hold their interest.

This impossible to put down YA thriller had me on the edge of my seat from the first chapter - all the way to the end of this incredibly fast-paced read. Author Johnson ramps up the tension from zero to a thousand from the get-go and doesn't let up. I was intensely curious to read this book since I loved all four of this author's previous books - all spectacularly well done contemporary YA romances with deep themes and complicated interpersonal dynamics. So, when I found out she was jumping genres to put out a YA thriller...well, I love an author who has the courage to dive into a wildly different genre, and I'm not surprised that she pulled it off brilliantly. This may be one of the most heart-poundingly addictive beginning to a book that I've ever encountered. I felt like I was hurled into a life on the run along with teenaged Katelyn, cast into utter confusion and desperate to survive while trying to unravel the mysterious circumstances that upended her life, piece by piece. Throw in a romantic thread with someone Katelyn is forced to align herself with, as well as a satisfying ending (I loved the final scene) and you have all the ingredients for the perfect vacation read. Now I'm hoping that Abigail Johnson tries out fantasy, horror and every other genre. Can't wait to see what she comes up with next.

This is a fast-paced, action packed thriller with a twist. We’ve all read the story of the woman on the run from her dark past. But in this case, she has a teenage daughter, and the book is from her point of view.
I greatly enjoyed this story--because we find out just why Katelyn’s mother has kept them running for her entire life just as she finds out. There are a few twists and turns in the plot, though they’re somewhat predictable. Nevertheless, the ride is quite enjoyable. There are some pretty intense scenes, making this a book for older young adults.

*3.5*

A quick, mindless thriller that’s more formulaic than original. I did enjoy the tight pacing and a few of the twists sprinkled throughout, but had to suspend disbelief at several characters’ decisions when faced with near-death experiences. The ending is also a little too neat and convenient for my tastes, a complete contrast from the sheer intensity and white-knuckle suspense of the first 35+ chapters. However, I believe newcomers to the genre and fans of fast-paced YA thrillers will enjoy this more than I did.

Katelyn and her mom never stay in one place very long. Now they’re running from danger her mom won’t specify. Then, Katelyn is on her own, but not for long. With the help of Malcolm, a guy she finds tied up in a car trunk, she’s about to discover what her mom is fleeing.

I love Abigail Johnson’s books and while GIRL ON THE RUN wasn’t my favorite, it’s more me than the story. Most of the book is nonstop action, with drops of backstory about Katelyn’s true history.

Katelyn is the baddest of badasses, resourceful, smart, loyal and strong, I’d want her in my corner. I enjoyed her character very much. I liked Malcolm too. I never got a real sense for the minor characters, but GIRL ON THE RUN is more plot than character centered. I wish I could have better understood the mother/daughter bond that inspired Katelyn’s fierce loyalty.

GIRL ON THE RUN is a true, heart-thumping thriller, not a mystery billed as a thriller.

2.5⭐️ average read that felt far too scripted.

I did not connect to or like the characters very much (in an pasty manner rather than genuine feelings either way). The setting could be anywhere. The plot, sways between plausible and idiotic. My big bug-bear is the ‘voice’ - immature, condescending, illogical jumps to conclusions and no real reason for the story transpiring. The quick...let it be the conclusion was a bit disappointing.

YA readers may love this very ‘processed’ feeling novel.

I started out really enjoying this one, it was fast paced and gripping. I was really intrigued to find out what the mum had done and why all the cloak and dagger secrets. I felt like it lost a little direction half way through and the ending was all a bit 'tied in a bow', which let it down slightly. A very solid 3 star read though and definitely worth checking out if you enjoy a YA thriller.

*I received an ARC for my honest opinion*

This novel had me hooked from beginning to end! From chapter one, we are on the run and we don’t stop until the end. Everything is fast-paced and you can feel the adrenaline dripping from the page. This novel is filled with suspense, mystery, heartache, and you can’t put it down! The pacing was perfect and information was given to the character and reader in a believable amount and at a believable time frame. Johnson does a great job of showing us the emotions and action instead of telling. No wording felt awkward and the series of events flowed naturally together.

The characters were very believable as well. You get the right info about them at the right times to make you wonder what is really going on. I loved the mystery behind it and how our main character had to figure out what really happened. Katelyn was a believable teen going through this madness and her actions never felt contradictory. While reading, I could tell Johnson did a lot of research to make this story unique and believable, which is something I really like in a book.

I highly recommend this book for anyone who loves YA or thrillers. You won’t be disappointed!

One of the best books I’ve ever read, never a slow chapter and keeps the reader at the edge of their seat. Just a little confusing with the time/location jumps, but other then that I highly recommend reading this.

The plot sounded interesting to me, and it could have been a great book. But the writing wasn't very good and it felt very rushed. The ending, especially, had a lot of promise but felt flat.

"We are children hiding beneath the bed, and the monster is coming."

I've fallen in love with Abigail Johonson's contemporary novels, so I was excited to learn about the release of this thriller. Once it got to me, I flew through it in a day.

Although not as well developed or hard hitting as her contemporaries, this story does what it's supposed to do - it thrills. There's always something happening, the characters never have a chance to breathe. Being a reader of Dean Koontz, I will say it was different reading a teen thriller as opposed to one of his.

The romance was a little off putting for me, but I'm sure many people enjoy that aspect of the story. A fun read for an afternoon and one I can see myself having fun with again.

I love Abigail's contemporary romances. They have everything I love about the young adult coming-of-age years and first love. I was surprised to hear about this one, actually, since it seemed like the complete opposite of Abigail's other books. But it isn't the opposite at all. Instead, she's masterfully combined themes of family and romance with a fast-paced plot packed full of questions. I'm embarrassed at how irresponsible I was while reading this book. I just couldn't put it down until I had answers--which meant I was glued until the very last page. If you want to get lost in a thrilling adventure that has you jumping at every sound, you've found the right book.

Check out this, other reviews, and more fun bookish things on my young adult book blog, Here's to Happy Endings!

When it comes to fast paced thrillers, especially those about the main character trying to escape or cover up a dark past, there are a lot of them out there for you to choose from.

The list narrows a bit when you venture into the YA genre of these kinds of books.

It narrows even more when you make the main character the daughter of the woman trying to cover up her dark past, and you tell it from the daughter's point of view.

In fact, it makes it pretty darn original.

Katelyn lives a quiet life - her mom makes them move a lot, and while it bothers her that she never really gets to make any connections with anyone around her, she eventually begins to look at it as a normal part of life. Her mom is also a bit overprotective - making sure Katelyn isn't hanging out with anyone that she doesn't approve of (or almost anyone at all), and always making sure Katelyn stays close to home.

One afternoon, Katelyn decides that she is going to help her single mother through the annoying process of dating by creating her a profile on a dating site. When her mother sees this, however, she freaks out, telling Katelyn that they had to pick up and leave.

That's when everything gets turned upside down for Katelyn.

On the run, her mother helps the escape, and takes Katelyn to a motel room, where she leaves her and tells her not to talk to anyone or to leave the room. She tells her she will come back for her.

But she doesn't.

Eventually Katelyn does the one thing her mother told her not to do - leaves the motel room.

Things go downhill from there - still at the motel, someone breaks into her room looking for her a while later. She escapes, but stumbles across a boy locked in a trunk - someone who might be her only way to figure out this whole mess and find her mother.

This novel is completely twisty and turn-y and full of all kinds of fast paced thrills. It was like a roller coaster of emotions over the course of the whole book - I loved it!

Abigail Johnson is a fabulous writer and I have enjoyed some of her contemporary novels, so I really was excited about reading her thriller, Girl on the Run. I'm a huge fan of thrillers, especially when they are written by authors I really like, so when I picked this one up, it's easy to say that I finished it over the course of two afternoons because I couldn't put it down. And then my about-to-turn thirteen year old bookworm daughter read it, and she adored it, too.

It was such a quick read, and it kept me guessing until the end. While some of the mystery was unraveled rather quickly into the story, bits and pieces kept adding to it, until you are finally left with the bigger picture at the end. Sure, I guessed about what was going on, and I must say - I was completely wrong about it. I did not expect the answers to be what they were, and the ending was very, very surprising.

In fact, I loved everything about this book, except it did feel a tad bit rushed - I kind of wished there had been more to it, maybe even a little bit more to the mystery? Or even a bit more about the characters. Except from Katelyn, the main character, I felt like there wasn't enough detail about them. I don't think it's a really bad thing, but I had hoped for a little more depth.

That being said, the character development for Katelyn was amazing. She really changes throughout the book, as she is faced with a ton of things and has almost no guidance as she tries to find her mom. Her friendship with the boy she finds in the trunk of the car is probably one of my favorite parts of the novel.

Like thrillers? Love amazing YA authors? Definitely opt for Girl on the Run.

For years it has been just Katelyn and her mother, Melissa after her dad died when she was little. Her mother has been the type that was super strict and always followed rules and growing up they always moved around never staying in one place too long. That is until Katelyn now seventeen believes her mother deserves happiness and without her mother's knowledge, she creates a dating profile for her mother. Of course, her mother isn't happy that Katelyn broke the rules and now disaster has struck as the people that Melissa had hoped would never find her at least not till after Katelyn turned 18 has turned up and ready to strike and cause damage. Now Katelyn and her mother are on the run. When they get separated, Katelyn becomes worried especially when she finds that they are after her too. Along the way, Katelyn meets Malcolm. He was the one behind the computer algorithm that found Katelyn and her mother and he lets her know about her mother's past and soon Katelyn will discover her birth was a lie and that her mother had been trying to protect her from evil.
Girl on the Run was a quick read and easy to get into as was very suspenseful and filled with secrets and twists and OMFG moments. It was interesting reading this book as it was a storyline, I have read a couple of times and as I was starting this book, I did have to check if I had read this one as it sounded so familiar.

Perfect for fans of April Henry!!!

Girl on the Run is a YA thriller that is perfect for readers who are looking for a quick, fast paced mystery full of family secrets, shocking discoveries, and nearly nonstop action.

description

Seventeen year old Katelyn Reed thinks she is doing something nice when creates an online dating profile for her overly cautious, slightly neurotic mother in an attempt to help her find love again. Her mother can be a bit over protective.

No social media.

Only sleepovers with approved friends.

No boys.

The list goes on.

However, when Katelyn reveals to her mother what she has done, Katelyn's whole world changes. Instantly, Katelyn's mother becomes someone that Katelyn almost doesn't recognize. She tells Katelyn they have to leave, right now, and her fear is written all over her face. Katelyn has no idea why her mother is reacting this way. She knew her mom would be resistant to an online dating profile, but she never expected this reaction.

description

The next thing Katelyn knows, her mother has stolen her neighbor's car and they are abandoning their home for the past year in the middle of the night. Katelyn doesn't understand what's going on, and her mother isn't giving her any clues either. She is just frantic to get Katelyn away.

When another car smashes into the side of their car, trying to force Katelyn and her mom off the road, Katelyn realizes that her mother's fears are very real.

description

Someone is coming after them, and her mother has been keeping secrets.

description

This YA thriller is perfect for anyone who is looking for suspense with a lighter feel to it than most thrillers. There is definitely some violence in the book as Katelyn and her mom are pursued by the mysterious people chasing them, but the violence is usually referenced in past tense, injuries are sustained merely trying to get away, or threats are made about future violence with most never being carried out. The final showdown at the end of the book is a little bloody, but overall a solid conclusion to the story.

There is also a small romantic side story that plays a part throughout the book, and I wished this had been a little more fleshed out at the end of the book. But overall, it added a sweet element to help balance the nonstop action and fast pace of the book.

Once again, this is a great story is you are looking for a light fast paced thriller that you can get through quickly and enjoy.

Girl on the Run is a 2022-2023 Gateway Award Nominee.

" Girl on The Run " written by Abigail Jones is a very twisty story with lots of curve balls. The main character in the story is a girl named Katelyn who lives with just her mother. Katelyn seems to know everything about her mother since she lives with her, but when Katelyn gets her mother back on the dating status, things take a turn for the worst. Katelyn soon discovers that her mother isn't really who she thinks she is. She has been lied to her whole entire life and wants answers. Katelyn soon finds the answers she has been looking for with a help from a friend , but it's not an easy task.
I am sure anyone who reads this will go through the same emotions as I did. " Girl on the Run " makes you think about how well you know others and if they truly know you. You never know when you could be on the run from something.

Omg this book was amazing! Right of the start, I was hooked and knew that I had to finish it in one night.

I loved how the story had me at the edge of my seat the entire time with so many jaw dropping discoveries and secrets. In addition to that the characters were absolute daredevils who persevered through everything and who were so easy to like. I found the dynamic between the characters to really well and appreciated their growth throughout.

This was definitely a book outside of my preferred genre but I am so glad I took the leap because it was so entertaining. So pumped to read more of Abigail’s books!

I absolutely loved GIRL ON THE RUN. I finished it in 12 hours, but I would have finished it faster if my husband hadn't made me go to bed. It's the perfect YA Thriller--heart-pounding and spine-tingling without being too dark or gory. It had great character development, a believable, slow-burn romance, and the pacing makes it impossible to put down!

Typical YA format, not that scary for a thriller (hence the YA status, I guess) but it kept the tension up and had a lot of action. I think this book was exactly what I expected it to be so it was precisely what I wanted to read this week. So I enjoyed it but that doesn't necessarily mean it was a great book.

The girl on the run was a good book. The opening of the scenes set a stomach clenching of a chase. It made you want to continue reading to find out what happens. The chapters are somewhat short and each end with a cliff hanger making this book very appealing and accessible for readers to want to continue the read. Overall a great book and setup of the book.
