Rose lives in the big city. But one day her life changes forever... Rose, her twin sister Penny and their brother Peter find themselves swept away into a great adventure, sailing the blue Pacific to a mission school deep in the jungles of Papua. There they become adventurers and explorers in their own wild kingdom. They swim and fish in the rivers and make huts and gardens where they grow pineapples, peanuts and bananas. They chase huge emerald and blue butterflies. They run barefoot and free, and imagine themselves as Tarzan and Jane, swinging on vines through the jungle. But there are hidden dangers snakes, scorpions, jerry-wars, malaria – and in the rivers, fearsome crocodiles... Here in the jungles of Papua, New Guinea the readers of The Barn Chronicles will meet their favourite characters again in a different time, a different place. This is where their adventures first began.
When I chose this book to read aloud to my children recently, I was expecting good, clean adventure. I was not disappointed! I loved the way Rose and Penny’s parents allowed their children freedom to explore and play in the jungle around their home and the river that went past their house, while providing guidance when needed. The parents set a good example for their children, admitting it when they did wrong and made mistakes, and guiding their children to make things right when they needed to. This is a book that all boys and girls who love realistic adventure will enjoy. I am pleased to have it on our shelf!
A perfect book. Delightful and adventurous- just the sort of thing I would have dreamed of doing when I was a little girl playing in the creek and swinging from rope swings.
