Can Allie walk the line between shadow and light, or will she fall?
Allie Donovan returns to the elite St Matthew's Academy with mounting problems. Her heart wants Jared, but her bain argues their relationship is doomed. Weasel is acting strange, and Eloise is giving off sparks.
Then Allie finds a kindred spirit looking for escape in the library - Princess Alexandrina Victoria of Kent. The heir to the British throne is on a temporary hiatus from her mother's tight control. But as friendship grows, the young woman turns into a catalyst who could shatter a five hundred year old treaty between the Noctis and Lux.
Unless Allie can stop the chain of events from unfolding, her new friend will never become Queen of England. When you were born and raised in a shadow world, decisions aren't black or white. How far will Allie go, to protect the future queen...?
I love the writing from this author. Her plots are creative and engaging, and her characters - especially her female characters - are strong, independent and smart, and I connect to them and like them a lot!
This is book two in this series, and while I liked book one, I loved book two. I absolutely adored this author's other series - the artifact hunters - and didn't think it was possible to like stories or characters more than I loved that series. While I can't say I love this series *more* than the artifact hunters, it has really engaged me and drawn me in, especially with book two.
Allie is such a good character, and even though she has a lot of hurdles to overcome to find her happy ending, she is still willing to help others - in this book, she helps someone rather important which is all I'll say to avoid spoilers, and she is still kind and resourceful and determined to live her life her way against all odds.
The only issue with this series is that there is no date planned for the release of the third book in the series, and this book ends with a huge cliff-hanger. That is a huge disappointment when one loves the characters and the world-building. Having messaged the author, I received a response that the intent is to have the third book out "sometime next year" but with Covid there is no firm plan. So while I really have enjoyed books one and two with this, I would recommend waiting until the third book comes out before starting this series, unless you are okay with an unknown for when a full resolution of the plot might be available.
I thought I couldn't like a series more than I liked the artifactor series, but I do. This book took me on a roller coaster ride. I laughed, cried, and held my breath the entire book. The ending...well let's just say that I need the third book yesterday! For the author, I have one question How could you leave us like this? The author builds a world that is rich in history and culture. Our protagonists are good people trapped by life and expectations, just like the real world but in a vastly different setting. Anyone who reads this book should be able to relate. I love most that our heroine is of strong mind, spirit, and tongue. She ranks with my favorite heroines Kate Daniels, Jane Yellowrock and my favorite heroes Declan and Chris
