The complete Ancient Enemy series together for the first time - all four books in one box set.
It starts when Stella, an archaeologist specializing in Anasazi culture, finds David, a young Navajo boy who stumbles onto their dig site in a remote corner of the Navajo Reservation. David's coat is smeared with blood and he's in shock from something he's seen, revealing nothing but his name. Soon Stella and the other archaeologists will discover that something is chasing David, an unimaginable ancient evil that will stop at nothing to get him.
After Stella escapes the dig site with David, driving north into Colorado, right into a blizzard, she's carjacked by a gang of criminals fleeing a botched bank robbery. All of them take refuge from the snowstorm in what they believe is an abandoned cabin. But after they find the owner's mutilated body stuffed into a freezer, they realize that something is out there in the blizzard waiting for them.
The Ancient Enemy wants things . . . you have to give it what it wants or bad things will happen. Very bad things.
This is one of the best horror series I ever came across. What is the Ancient Enemy and why is there a connection to deserted towns of the Anasazi, Mayas and other american tribes? This demon, monster, God or whatever you name him is along for a very long time and in for no good. Can David defeat it? What about all the other well crafted characters in this series? Can they survive the evil puppet master? The author comes up with a brilliant and extremely compelling story set in Colorado and New Mexico. You can buy the whole series since you can't stop after having started with the first volume. This book series will give you a creepy-crawly feeling you won't experience too often. Absolutely recommended. Modern horror at its very best!
I don't think I would like to see the inside of Mark Luken's mind. If the contents of this novel are any indication it is a terrifying and twisted place. And brilliant. This book exuded evil in every word on every page. The carnage was horrifying and graphic and in your face but you couldn't look away. I loved each and every one of the characters that United and fought against the Ancient Enemy with the boy David. A boy that possessed special powers that could destroy the insidious evil that was slowly taking over our world. The gore and killing was a little hard to take some times. I must admit it was truly frightening to see what happened to everyone, but you couldn't look away. And the ending was so abrupt I was a little disappointed. I wanted to know what happened to all those characters I loved. I wanted to see them happy and living life in the future. They were all so compelling. I really enjoyed this, weird thing to say about a book so steeped in evil, but I did. It was very interesting and I really liked the writing too. If you are in the mood for nightmares, these books are for you. I probably won't sleep for a week. But it was totally worth the journey into the Void.
Great read! Mr. Lukens weaves a great tale of horror that keeps you on the edge. This is the complete set and is completely integrated so you know who each character is . Not always easy to follow at first but doesn't take long to become clearer. Loved the series! Thank you Mr. Lukens, keep them coming!
Usually an ad for a book or an author will read, Stephen King and So and So combined. It would be a disservice to Mr. Lukens to do that. He created an entire world in this Ancient Enemy series. It does start out a bit slow (for me), but I realized the characters are being introduced and will be fully fleshed out (pun intended) as the story goes. What is at play are different kinds of evil- some you can see and some(thing) you cannot. And Lukens, much like a good film director, doesn't show you the "monster" at the beginning. You are introduced to a lean of a head to the left, hollow voices, and undefined moving things in the light and dark. I would definitely recommend this series. I'm looking forward to reading Mr. Lukens' other books. p.s. If coyotes howl and spiders crawl when you read this... oh never mind.
Didn't realize when I started reading this series it was pretty much a hard core horror fest and almost tossed it about a third of the way through. glad I didn't as it turned into a pretty decent thriller quadrilogy with a liberal sprinkling of gore and chill-inducing set pieces. Not really my cup of tea.but I have to admit quite well done.
This is a great series by Mark Lukens!! This is not my kind of paranormal I like particularly, but it kept me reading chapter after chapter until I was done! I couldn’t read any other book because I was too interested in this one. 1, 2, and 4 books were the best, the ones I liked the most. If you decide to read, there is some language, but not much at all. I wouldn’t have been able to read, if there had been. There is a LOT of gore, because that’s the kind of horror it is, a sci-fi paranormal horror, so be prepared for that. That’s what I was talking about when I wrote it isn’t my type of paranormal, but it was so interestingI had to continue. So, again, if you decide to read, Happy Horror Reading 😬👻
mark is clearly maturing as a writer. his vocabulary is clear and not chosen to impress and his characters are not implausibaly stupid in order to make his story work. a nice break from zombie apocalypse and emp themes. it is reminiscent of an early preston/child novel dealing with the skinwalkers and the anazazi. my 4 star rating reflects that mark is at the precipice and ready to make his next leap.
Wasn’t sure when I started & then I was done. This is a fast paced story with a a boy named David & a pretty nasty demon. Add the FBI, Cole who just robbed a bank ,Stella an archeologist & Begay A Navajo & the police chief & a cast of others alive & dead & you have the makings of a pretty wild tale. Great read which kept me interested & entertained
I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys, fiction, horror, or mystery. I couldn't put this down. I fell asleep most nights reading this box set! Bravo, Mr. Lukens! I am now a diehard fan. The characters are so realistic with their quirks and flaws. The Ancient Enemy is terrifying! I will be reading this box set again!
Mark continues to amaze me, his ability to switch genre but keep up the intensity is second to none. The characters were so relatable I'm already missing them.
If you like authors like Chris Carter, Karin Slaughter, Stephen King, Dean Koontz this is a must.
Finally @mark thank you so much for such a gripping read, you rock dude!
A fantastic story or stories, depending on how you look at it. Present, past, and future all collide in this remarkable tale with a cast of incredible characters. A horror story, to be sure, with an amazing plot. A great read, but one you might want to do with the lights on.
I enjoyed the series as it was very different. Great reading about the past and present with the 9 year old Indian boy. I didn't know what was going to happen from one page to the next. Great thriller.
I was hooked from beginning to end. Totally enthralled with the characters, the history and mystery, and horrors within this series. I look forward to reading more from this author. Highly, highly recommend!!
I enjoyed this series. The storyline worked and the characters were consistent throughout. There were a few grammatical errors and some repetition but it kept me reading from start to finish. I'll probably read it again someday.
Not many authors recently have inspired me to pick up a book for daytime reading but Mark Likens has done just that. I was completely enthralled with the storyline, plot, characters, and couldn't wait for bedtime to continue the journey with them.
I enjoyed reading the first couple of the series, but found myself losing interest in the story while reading the third. The writing is very good throughout, but the story just got tiresome to me.
Take a trip to explore one of the mysteries of America. The Anasazi had an advanced civilization in North America. Then they vanished. This series of novels takes us into that mystery with a paranormal twist. A great series!
Ancient Enemy book 1 The Anasazi are a people steeped in mystery. They were the most advanced civilization in North America during their time. They built great cities and roads, farmed and excelled in many crafts. Then suddenly they walked away from everything. This happened twice! First, they left their cities in the southwest and moved north. Again they built highly defensible cities. Again they left it all behind.
Stella is an archeologist with a huge interest in the Anasazi. She jumps on the opportunity when a colleague invites her to a dig where he has discovered a new Anasazi city within a cave. What should have been the opportunity of a lifetime turns into a nightmare as one by one the scientists are picked off, killed and mutilated in most horrible ways.
Stella flees with a young Navajo boy she finds near the sight. Surely the evil can’t follow them! From one horror to the next, Stella and David run afoul of a band of fleeing bank robbers and soon discover that evil isn’t that easy to escape!
Darkwind book 2 The Navajo Tribal Police and the FBI are investigating the murders at the dig site Stella and David fled from. They are looking in the wrong place, trying to find a human suspect in the crimes. What happens when they stumble into the path of the Ancient Enemy? Can modern law enforcement prevail against an ancient evil?
Stella, Cole and David survived the confrontation with the Darkwind at the cabin. But their only hope is to find a medicine man to teach David about his skills. Can a ten year old boy really be the only hope to surviving this evil spirit?
Hope’s End book 3 Meet the David that lived in 1891 when the Ancient Enemy last visited. A young Indian boy, David, has his family slaughtered shortly before a sheriff who has had his own run-in with the Ancient Enemy.
When a sudden sandstorm arises, the two are forced to seek shelter in the town of Hope’s End, the same town, a ghost town in modern day David’s time, where David made his stand/ Is the history of these characters linked?
Evil Spirits book 4 David is now fifteen years old and trying to just have a normal life. Until he begins dreaming again. In fact everyone that was with David in the ghost town begins to have bad dreams. Can the Ancient Enemy be back?
David’s mentor has passed away. Can he hope to fight this enemy on his own?
Well-written, fast-paced, well-developed characters. Unfortunately the big bad wasn't developed much, no back-story or history. We get a glimpse at the beginning and that's it. It was just ancient and evil. That's it.
