Put the fun into gardening with this beautifully illustrated guide to growing plants indoors and out.
For parents and children who enjoy engaging with the outdoors and want to do more activities together, this beautifully designed book explains how plants work, describes the building blocks of gardening, and shows how to grow everything from cacti to cucumbers. With great facts and practical projects, giving the reader a lot of information it's an ideal introduction for complete beginners, designed to inspire a life-long love of gardening.
I received an advanced reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.
This is a fantastic family book to share with your children. It has fantastic pictures and drawings that both children and adults alike will enjoy as well as a fantastic amount of information on all areas of gardening. The book is broken down into sections which is useful and I enjoyed the science experiments within it too. A delightful and informative book for any family library.
This is a great book for families to use for nature studies or to get started gardening. It's filled with information on getting started with gardening and also with fun science projects to teach kids about how plants grow. Lots of beautiful color photos add to the appeal. I have to say that I disliked the color scheme of the illustrations (similar to the cover) and felt that it detracted from the book. That seems irrationally picky on my part, but it is what it is. Other than the strangely off-putting color scheme, I really enjoyed the book and highly recommend it. There is a ton of information in this book and there are lots of projects that kids will enjoy.
I read a temporary digital ARC of this book for the purpose of review.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for the digital review copy! All thoughts and opinions are my own.
RHS Get Growing is the perfect resource for families that want to start a garden or want to fit more educational activities into their family gardening time. It includes many aspects of gardening, from starting a compost to planting seeds to propagating!
This illustrated guide to gardening will help you find the most ideal location in your garden for plants depending on the sun, location, and rain. It covers different types of soil and how to test its acidity. It shares the differences and benefits of container gardening and raised beds and even indoor plants and how to care for them. There's tons of information on veggie gardening, as well as fruits and herbs and it covers friendly and not-so-friendly insects and other garden visitors.
This book covers tons of little things that you wouldn't even think to worry about like keeping dust off of your indoor plants' leaves and how to garden on a slope or with too much shade or very little space. This book encourages families to get out and garden no matter what your circumstance, from little space to no space or maybe a too shaded yard or sloped yard.
There's tons of information in this book but also lots of educational experiments and how-to's that you can try out yourself! Learn how to start a terrarium and make a flower wreath or learn how to save seeds and grow kitchen scraps! There's plenty of hands-on material here to keep you and your children busy all year long! It even covers what to do in your garden within the four different seasons!
I love gardening and still learned a lot from this book. I think it's the perfect resource for families that want to start a garden or spend more time outdoors. It's full of fun illustrations and photos that will help children understand everything that goes into gardening and how fun and rewarding it can be!
A complete guide to gardening that will engage the whole family. Gardening can bring families together. Starting with the basics each page has a how to that is easy and exciting to grasp. The book has 9 parts and they are as follows

This will make a great gift for families to get growing and enjoy the fruit of their labor.
Highly recommend.
A Special Thank you to Quartro Publishing and Netgalley for the ARC and the opportunity to post an honest review.
A beautifully written gardening book, broken down into easy to understand terms. Get Growing is laid out perfectly into sections. The illustrations are cutesy and will appeal to all audiences. What I particularly liked were the Science projects to do with kids, as they are all feasible and will get kids of all ages interested in nature and Science. This book got me excited for gardening season, as I’ll be starting my seeds soon! Thank you to the publisher for the advance reader in exchange for my honest review.
RHS Get Growing: A Family Guide to Gardening Inside and Out is a comprehensive guide for families to establish their own sustainable home garden. The illustrations, photos, easy to follow directions, and explanations are easy to follow and perfect for not only parents to learn the ins and outs of gardening, but to share that knowledge in an easy-to-follow and fun way.
This beautiful guide offers detailed information on how to grow fruits, vegetables, herbs, and other plants in every season. It also offers the building blocks of starting your garden, including how to test your soil. My favorite section is an offering of indoor experiments designed to teach us how plants and ecosystems work, how to make our own pesto with the basil from our garden, and fun projects like making an herbal wreath. It’s excellent for kids of 4 and older to better understand how things work and develop a love for gardening and being a part of making their own food.
We have been growing our own vegetables for years, and still learned a lot from this great little guide, I cannot wait to see how it impacts this year’s yield. My favorite thing is seeing how much more my son is involved this year. Part of this is due to age, being a year older, but he is also loving learning how the little seeds become food, instead of just seeing it as an excuse to play in the dirt.
If you are looking to learn more about gardening (indoors and outdoors) with your family I highly recommend this book.
This book is PERFECT for the beginner gardener. If you’re already growing from seeds and maintaining your yard somewhat this book won’t be as mind blowing.
It goes through the science basics of how plants feed, how much to water and when, the gardening tools, types of garden layouts, how to prepare for and what to do within each season. This book is directed at an audience that’s not situated along the equator, so either northwards of Tropic of Cancer or southwards of Tropic of Capricorn- AKA someone that inhabits lands that have all 4 seasons and a somewhat temperate or colder climate ;)
It details how to grow vegetables, fruits, herbs, and indoor plants from a equator like origin: succulents, cacti, ferns, palms, carnivorous plants, etc.
The book also provides ecosystem friendly alternatives to usual pesticides, and way of growing a garden. It goes on about bringing in the wild life into your garden because it not only aids everything around it but your crops too!
In short, this is a well-rounded gardening book that also comes with fun facts and activities to do with your garden and produce that would’ve never occurred to me or are not so wide spread.
The illustrations and splendid, they’re minimalistic but well balanced with the chosen colour scheme. Not only does this make it pleasing to the eyes but also the incorporation of beautiful photographs of the outdoors and, well, plants! Just adds to one’s desire to be one with nature and GET GROWING!
RHS Get Growing is a wonderful book for all ages! While this book is geared towards families learning how to garden together, this book can also be used for adult learners. As both an adult learner and avid gardener, i enjoyed this book and took away information i did not know previously.
At first look, the photography and graphic design is remarkable. The imagery is playful, colorful and inspiring! Each page is designed like a modern children's book meets a photo album. Personally, i would purchase this book on the visual appeal alone! I feel imagery can really "make or break" a gardening book, and RHS Get Growing is a fantastic example of imagery done well!
Many gardening facets are covered in this book. The descriptions and explanations are simple and effective for all ages. There are many DIYs and experiments to try. Each one is simple and can be done across all ages and in most environments! The DIY projects are wonderfully suited for families, someone who provides childcare or educational services, as well as adult learners.
All in all, i would recommend this book to a large audience of learners. I have already recommended this book to a few of my friends who have children and home school. I have added this book to my wish-list for my personal gardening book library!

*I received this book from NetGalley in return for a honest review*
This was such a fun, colourful, and informative guide to plants and gardening great for kids and families, but also for everyone else who wants to be able to get something to grow. I love how it was divided into sections about different types of plants and how it was so detailed about all the different steps.
The experiments and projects are great for kids so that they can learn how best to grow these plants, vegetables, and flowers themselves and what is really happening. I also really loved the end of the book where it talks about what you can be doing in your garden every season of the year.
There are great parts of this book for everyone and I think it will be a great addition for any aspiring gardener.
I requested and received an e-ARC of this book from NetGalley and Quatro Publishing Group – Frances Lincoln Childrens in exchange for an honest review.
I am so glad I read this book before this year’s growing season started, this book provides a lot of great knowledge. I enjoyed reading all of the ‘Project ideas’ and ‘Did you know’ sections, I would have loved to try those projects as a child. Before I read this book, I had no idea what ‘bolting’ was or that it could be prevented by watering your plants more often, I wish I had known that when we lived in Ontario! I also enjoyed learning about ‘pips’ vs. store bought trees.
Overall, a great book for starting and maintaining a garden with easy to read and understand information.
“How to” gardening books for children seem to be in short supply at most bookstores and libraries and this one is clearly intended to be used with adults or older siblings at the helm. Despite that, placement at elementary libraries is appropriate and could be used independently, to varying degrees, by many of those readers. I.lustrations are both sketches and truly beautiful photographs along with diagrams to augment instructions for creating a successful garden. Families desiring to make their garden a whole household endeavor would do well to use this book as a guide and to add some science to the project. Thanks for the dARC, Edelweiss.
A combination of illustrations and photographs make this an eye-catching instructional book for children and their parents. It clearly shows the ins and outs of gardening and includes Did You Know... boxes, experiments as well as well presented instructions. Chas.ters include, where you can grow, how plants work and how to grow a range of plants, fruits and vegetable. I will include this book on https://childrenslibrarylady.com/gard... when I next update it.
Thank you to NetGallery for an advanced copy of the book!
