Himalaya is a bengali language travelogue written by Jaladhar Sen in 1900. Jaladhar Sen wrote more than forty books in a variety of text books, biographies, children's literature, translations, travelogues, novels and short stories. His fiction, which depicts the joys and sorrows of family life, includes the novels Duhkhini (1909), Abhagi (3 parts, 1915-32), Utsa (1932) and the short story collections (1900), Kabgaler Thakur (1920) and Bada Manus (1929). He also wrote a biography of Harinath Majumdar, editor of Grambarta Prakashika, titled Kangal Harinath (2 parts, 1913, 1914) and edited his writings in Harinath Granthabali. His travelogues include Prabas Chitra (1899) and Himalaya (1900).

ভ্রমণপিয়াসী মনকে হিমালয় যতটা আকৃষ্ট করে আর কিছু বোধ করি তত নয়। আর তাই হিমালয় নিয়েই লেখা হয়েছে একের পর এক ভ্রমণকাহিনী, তন্মধ্যে অধিকাংশই কালোত্তীর্ণ। জলধর সেনের এই হিমালয়-ই বাংলা সাহিত্যে হিমালয়ভিত্তিক প্রথম রচনা। গুরুগম্ভীর হিমালয়, বরফাচ্ছাদিত শৃঙ্গ, দুঃসাধ্য পথ, অলকানন্দা-মন্দাকিনীর কুলকুল আওয়াজ, নৈসর্গিক সৌন্দর্য, ঠাণ্ডা পাথুরে পথ আর পরিশ্রমী মানুষ-এই সবটুকুই রয়েছে হিমালয়ে। বই লেখার পটভূমি হচ্ছে লেখকের ব্যক্তিগত দু:খবোধ। অকালে স্ত্রী-সন্তানকে হারিয়ে নিজের জীবনের উপর বীতশ্রদ্ধ হয়েই তিনি বেরিয়ে পড়েন হিমালয়পথে, খুঁজতে থাকেন সাধুসঙ্গ। সেই অভিজ্ঞতাই ফিরে এসে লিপিবদ্ধ করেছেন হিমালয়ের খাতায়। ভাষাতে সাধু-চলিতে একটু মিশ্রণ রয়েছে, শব্দচয়ন ও কঠিন কিন্তু যে যুগে লেখা হয়েছে সেই যুগেরই উপযোগী করে লেখা। একদম নবীন পাঠকেরা পড়লে একটু সময় লাগবে পড়তে কিন্তু উপভোগ না করার কারণ নেই। রুদ্রপ্রয়াগ, কর্ণপ্রয়াগ, পুরনো লছমনঝোলা, যোশীমঠ, বদরিকাশ্রম, পেরিয়েছেন স্থানমাহাত্ম্য আর সৌন্দর্যে ভরপুর এসব স্থান, এরপর আবার ফিরে এসেছেন৷ এই চলার পথেই কতবার পড়েছেন বিপদে, হয়ে পড়েছেন অসুস্থ। তখন সঙ্গী সাধুজী আর বৈদান্তিক যে সেবা করেছেন তা অতুলনীয়। পাণ্ডা-মোহান্তদের সাথেও আলাপের কমতি নেই৷ রয়েছে স্থানীয় পাহাড়ী জীবন দেখার বিচিত্র আলেখ্য। রয়েছে গভীর রাতে প্রচণ্ড শীতে পাথুরে সিঁড়িতে বসে গঙ্গা দেখার অপার্থিব অভিজ্ঞতার কথা। এসব পড়ে মনটা ছুটে যেতে চায় সেই সুমহান সুউচ্চ হিমালয়ে। আজকালকার যুগে সেইরকম পবিত্রতা, অকৃত্রিমতা হয়তো থাকবে না কিন্তু বদ্রী-কেদারের মাহাত্ম্য তাতে একটুও কমবে না। আর সুরসিক মনের কৌতূহল আর রস ও শুকিয়ে যাবে না।

The book is a travelogue that recounts the journey undertaken by the author Jaladhar Sen to the Himalayan temple of Shri Badrinath. It recounts the events that took place around 130 years ago and hence we, as a reader, get to travel back in time to witness the splendid Himalayas, when it was still unsoiled by the dirty hands of capitalism. In today's world of social media and instant gratification, it has become quite a trend to visit and post aesthetic pictures of the splendid landscape of Shri Badrinath Dham. However, after reading this book I doubt hardly 10% of the present-day crowd of social media crazed torists would have dared to venture towards Shri Badrinath Dham had it remained as sequestered from the world as it was when Jaladhar Sen visited the temple precincts. It was indeed a pleasure to read about the various experiences that the author encountered during his journey. The writing is poetically enriched without being maudlin, and the author successfully captured the mesmerizing imagery of the serene landscape of Uttarakhand. The writing has not become dated, rather it offers the reader a window to peep into a nostalgia inducing time span that has long been deovoured by the relentless ravages of Time. While reading this book, I vicariously went on a journey to Shri Badrinath Dham along with the author, and witnessed the serenity of a bygone era.
