This one is sadly a little lacklustre - beautiful as the art may be, it is not enough to make this a particularly great read. There is arguably nothing wrong with it, but it somehow also never finds its momentum. I find that Sakai's works are rarely plot driven and very much build on the characters and their relationships - and she's usually really good at it. Not every story needs high stakes or a narrative threat with a particular purpose for the finale, some stories are just there to see how characters grow and develop in their daily routine.
Kimi to Dake wa Koi Ochinai is similar in that regard, but I didn't find the characters or their development enticing enough for this to work. Subaru has two overprotective brothers, and while I enjoy sibling relationships, overprotective ones can easily become very annoying. This one is borderline as one of the two brothers is essentially irrelevant - Toru appears to little, I wonder why he was included in the first place. Wataru on the other hand is very much present , we are given a reason for his overprotectiveness but I am not sure it added anything good to the story. I generally like stories that take that route provided it's well down and this is one of the few cases where I found it less suitable.
Arata, Subaru's main love interest, is generally fun and they make a cute couple, I'm tempted to say this would have been a better story had it ended sooner and only focused on these two. But Arata, much like Wataru, has his share of issues and both are family related and kind of brushed over. I found that everything that was a bit more meaningful or could have been explored on a deeper level was just pushed under the rug. There was also your typical jealous and manipulative rival who does a bunch of bad things and it's never talked about again - I felt it was vital to have some scene where this characters gets confronted and their wrongs made known to all characters involved, but it just never happens which made this ending also feel rushed.
I've seen some say this is open-ended but I wouldn't agree. While it is may not as in your face as some others, I think it's pretty clear where everyone stands. Although I do think that the main conflict gets wrapped up, there are plenty of other things that feel like they've been left hanging in limbo or were just rushed through. I do think that this is art wise one of Sakai's prettiest and I shall be holding on to my copies. It is by no means a bad manga, but I would consider it a weak one from Sakai and wouldn't recommend picking this one up to start with this author - better pick one of her other works and then circle back to this if you really like her.["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>
