My name is Raven Winters and I’m a mage. Who knew?
When I somehow summon fire in an act of self defense, I’m given two choices by the magic cops: attend some stuck-up magic school, or go to magic jail.
Well, shit. There go my plans for the next year. Apparently, I have Untamed Magic, whatever the hell that means. And I’ve got a year to get it under control at this magic academy that’s basically a finishing school for the elite. Everyone here is somebody important. And rich. Except for me.
Which paints quite the target on my back. Being the token poor kid is bad enough. Throw in that I somehow form a mating bond with four of the school’s most eligible bachelors. Oh yeah, and add in the fact that someone is trying to kill me. FML.
Publisher’s Note: Academy of the Elites is a reverse harem fantasy series meant for mature readers who want action, magic, and steam.
Alexis Calder writes sassy heroines and sexy heroes with a sprinkle of sarcasm. She lives in the Rockies and drinks far too much coffee and just the right amount of wine.
Sigh" 65% and I was calling it with this book, I'm not really sure what this read was about? She kills two Guys and we get little information about that, she's sent to a academy for magic creatures to learn to control powers but the whole read is of her getting wet, weak in the knees, horny? I wanted a real story! Not a rushed book with the main girl 16% in and already wanting two guys she doesn't know, and the guys in the same boat! "Idk why I want her, I haven't felt like this way for any other girl" I'm a playa but just meeting this new chick and walking her to her room im totally taken with her and want her ( rolling eyes ). I'm also over the I'm tough yet run away, I'm poor and don't fit it, and lastly, I'm nothing special speeches. Please let's get original and actually have a story besides a girl who's getting wet every other page
I am having a hard time reviewing this book. Don't get me wrong, I like it. The story line is very interesting and has potential. My problem is that when you think of a complete book, you think of a beginning, a middle (where the action starts) and the ending (where something but maybe not everything is wrapped up). This book had the beginning where you meet the characters and the background is laid out. However, as soon as the action starts, the books ends. I was like "where is the rest of the book?" I understand the author was going for a cliffhanger but they failed to put out a complete story. The plot is severely lacking because the author stopped the book too early. I am irritated enough that I might not read the rest of the book. If this author makes a habit of putting out incomplete books than I don't want to waste my time.
Usually I like a book that is full of supernatural characters, but honestly this is basically erotica set up in a supernatural world. The characters had only lust on their mind and no relation or even friendship was developed well. All the love interests wanted was a mate and literally every single male character introduced wanted to get into bed with Raven (the MC), so ya no! Also reverse harem. Didn't like the world. Chosen one trope but not developed well at all, everything was at best below average. Magic was so at the backseat for an academy to control magic, smh.
Untamed Magic is the first in a series of Paranormal Reverse Harem series set in academy, which is a popular theme in that sub-genre right now. After reading several of these, it's easy to recognize patterns - this one follows the pattern where a young mage is sent by force to a school, either that or magical prison, for a crime she didn't mean to commit. The book opens with her in the dean's office finding out she has to go; I'm glad the author did not start on the foot where the heroine is learning for the first time about her powers. It's shown she wasn't aware of her magic or the magic world until "three days ago" when page one opens, but I'm glad she's gotten over the shock and adapted before the story started.
The plot is loosely structured. World-building is only subtly filled in, there isn't much complexity, there's a small cliffhanger that's more like a fade-to-black type scene than anything else. We get a reveal of a villain of sorts at the end that we didn't know existed until that one scene, and it's hard to feel more shock at it since it involves something about the main character that's never been mentioned previously. I don't think she had much actual emotional investment or outrage about it because of this fact.
It's instalov and instalust. There are no explanations about her being able to tie into different men, how the mate bond can be possible, and she's not aware of most of it yet. Which brings me to another thing...
Why does she not know about magic but then gets unreasonably punished if something goes wrong because of something that's not her fault? That's just frustrating as all hell.
How come with these kinds of books the authors try to make all the male love interests players that have went through most of the women in the school before they met the heroine that changed them, but it's written almost like that's a good thing?
Another pet peeve of mine that I don't hold against a book personally, and that other readers enjoy - but this one is the standard, paint-by-numbers, chapter switch POV. When the main character's view is told, the writing is easier flowing. When it switches to random men, it gets into major cheese zone right away. If you read the second chapter alone, you'll already see what I mean.
Getting through this with a small plot would have been fine if the setting was strong, but what we have is me hating all the teachers and the institution. They have little personality other than seeming harsh and unfair. Their lack of understanding about her situation just makes them seem moronic. Rebel against the system! Wait, no one does? Oh well, we just have dickish characters pulling the strings then with no one fighting back or even caring.
The men don't stand out much either. They're not unlikable per se, just nothing special there to me. And for a book that makes it's focus all the sizzle and insta stuff, it's surprisingly cut off when it comes to intimacy. What happens is the book is filled with people thinking about doing it in graphic detail without actually getting the scenes out there.
Ehhh, it was fine, but I found that too many things just didn't work for me.
Here are just a few quick irks:
- The FMC is 21, and keeps saying how the academy feels like high school because everyone is behaving like brats. Yeah, they are (also, the teachers too), and it's super dumb. Why not have them act like adults or then just make a genuine high school academy book?
- Nobody tells the FMC, who is a magic newbie, how to do magic and what is "illegal" or how to act among the magical folk. And then they punish her for getting shit wrong. Why!? What's the point?
- If the twin boys are a part of her harem, they need to step up and play a bigger role. They felt like an after-thought. And I'm not sure I understood their personalities or liked them if I did.
- The big drama at the end of the book seemed like it came from nowhere, and it happened so fast, and then the book ended, that it all also felt like an after-thought. It was way too rushed. And also, with the way the FMC keeps pushing the men away and delaying the romantic bits, and thus making the plot stand still, it feels like the ending doesn't fit with the rest of the slow-moving story.
- Because the book is so short, and because a lot of space is used for less-than-romantic interactions between the FMC and the guys, all of the magical experiences that the FMC has are also rushed and just seem to happen. She just suddenly figures her magic out once she gets a feel for it. It just moves in her body and she just... feels it. Like magic!
So I guess what I'm saying is.. It wasn't bad, but the plot lines were off balance. The FMC was alright, although she seemed to be fighting against sexist men more than anything else. The book would have been better if more attention had been paid to some aspects (like developing magical skills and the big baddie at the end), and if a lot less repetitive attention had been taken away from others (like the encounters with her men that led nowhere).
This is a Reverse Harem Romance with a Magical Academy!! What more could you ask for?
Raven doesn’t realize she has magic until one day she uses it to defend herself from being murdered. Because she killed these murderers with her magic, she is sent to this Magical School and told she either stays there or goes to Magical Prison. She is then told that she is a Mage.
While Raven attends class and tries to learn about her magic and how to control it, she has a Incubus, a wolf shifter and twin mages all coming on to her (and feeling sure she’s their mate).
There’s quite a bit excitement for the beginning of the series. Also I like how it’s not jumping into the relationships, even though she feels drawn to them and vice versa.
I liked the beginning and I look forward to reading the book two in the series!!
I don't think that Raven is the right name for a character with red hair and green eyes. This book could have done with a lot of padding out, it was extremely short and didn't describe things all that well. Also, the sexual encounters happen to close to the beginning of the book, so proper tension isn't built up. I really like Luca, blonde hair and blue eyes and a good sense of humour--totally sexy. I do not like Ben, he is an over protective ass who thinks too much of himself. I can't wait to get to know the mage twins a bit better. The writing wasn't great in this book. It had a lot of "he said", "she said", "I said", repeated over and over again. But, the story is intriguing enough to make me want to read the next book in the series.
The series was free in my audiobook subscription. And I often saw books of this author but never read one. So I gave it a try. I rated all four books of the series with three stars. I read more exciting series, but this one was okay, and I could do other stuff, while listening to this series.
There are not many things that I love as much as a lot of magical creatures forced to exist in the same world, with each other. So, when I saw the blurb of this book, promising me an entire school filled with shifters, demons and mages I was already sold. Add the reverse harem aspect and the promise that those short reads would read like a tv show and nothing could go wrong.
And luckily this book totally lived up to the high expectations I had of it. It indeed manages to create the feel of watching a tv show. The pace of the story is high and scenes with deep heart to hearts and emotional development are nicely hidden in between action, both of the dangerous and the steamy kind.
And at the centre of the action is an ensemble of amazing characters, with Raven as the bright star. Raven has a very recognisable and sympathetic personality. It’s easy to connect with her and her way of talking and thinking sounds incredibly realistic. I had absolutely no trouble imagining myself in her shoes and I even think that most of the times I’d have made the exact same choices.
She’s surrounded by four amazing guys and thanks to their point of view chapters we also get the chance to form a bond with them, just like Raven. Especially Luka really managed to capture my heart quite quickly (which means the author did a really good job on writing his supernatural species and capturing his talents on paper), but I also can’t wait to see and read more about the twins.
And as if this all isn’t enough yet, there’s also a lovely plot. Of course, in this first book it’s mostly about getting to know the school and the rules, but especially towards the end more and more of the big arc seeps in and this book ends on such a high that I’d be very surprised if you wouldn’t wanna know what’s next.
I mean its clear that the book is headed to the place the blurb describes but it doesn't actually get to any mate bond place in the story which I found pretty misleading. It also jumps into sex fairly quickly in a way that just sort of felt like whip lash and didn't leave enough time for plot. Though most of the male characters have sections in their own points of view they're so distant I don't feel like I really know any of the characters. There just wasn't enough to this book to check the boxes it needed to hit.
If you are looking for erotica with a little bit of story, this is your book! I don't mind erotic scenes as long as there is a good story surrounding it. This felt like the author just wanted to write nothing but erotic scenes then realized it might need a plot.
This was a fast read. The plot was forced in places and there is still a lot of the plot unexplained. The book feels like it ended to soon, but luckily there are several more in this series. It was action packed and felt like reading an adult version of Harry Potter.
Short, but fairly decent read. I would have to continue the series to get the whole story. I'm not sure if I liked it enough to read the next book... Maybe.
**4.5 Stars** Raven has no idea what happened, she was being attacked by two men in an alley and next thing she knew she was basically arrested by magical police, dragged to a secret compound and told she killed those men with fire, informed she might be a mage and she is now forced to attend what is basically a magical college and has a year to get her life figured out before she will be imprisoned or worse. Yeah, to say that her life is in shambles is an understatement.
This was like the best mind candy I have had in a while! Untamed Magic was short and fun, no heavy thoughts or overly complicated plot/characters to try and analyze, instead you can just pick of the story and get sucked into this super fun romp. I will admit that I was a little worried as to what I was getting myself into since the first 20% of the book was a whirlwind with no discernible plot line and then some sexy incubus sex, I thought this might just be a sex book disguised as a story. But it wasn't! After that first sexual encounter, the sex took a back seat to the storyline and the story became more interesting and engaging. I will say that since this is such a short book, not a lot of world building or in depth characterizations occurred, but this was a great outline that I hope the next book will build on.
And yes, this is a magical school- that just so happens to be a reverse harem. I know academy books are the in thing right now, and I am so there for it, willing to read all the stories to get my adult HP vibe. I liked that while this book introduced three (maybe 4, I am uncertain if there will be twin action or not) of the males interested in Raven, she actually only has sex with one of the men- and that was only in dreams, not real life. I appreciate the slow burn aspect of the story, where we can get to know the characters before the book/series focuses on the sex. We get an incubus, an alpha werewolf (who is my favorite!) and a mage twin- and I love that we get all three of their point of views along with Raven in the story.
I can't wait to see what direction the next book will go in, especially with the cliffhanger ending this one had! I was so entertained by the fluff that was Untamed Magic, the perfect escapism reading that I needed and I recommend it for anyone who likes Reverse Harems, magic, magical school stories, mystery, action and random twists.
Raven didn't know she had magic, until she kills 2 men that were trying to kill her. She has a choice either go to magic prison or go to magic school. She picks magic school, as she just has a year to get her magic under control. Raven meets with the Dr Green, the head of the school. He says she is there under a scholarship that everything is covered. He tells Luka to take her to her room. Raven is feeling this crazy pull to Luka as he is to her. He tries to explain the way the school runs. Then he is surprised that she says that she is there on a scholarship. That she could have gone to magic prison due to her killing 2 men with magic she didn't know she had. That she had to leave her old life behind to come there. Luka takes her to the dorm with the shifters, she meets Ben, the alpha of the group there. He is surprised that they put a mage with them. He is drawn to her as well. Raven is having a reaction to being with Ben. He decides he is going to protect her One day in class, Ravens magic goes out of control, they twins that picked her to partnerr with protect her. They now have no choice but to help her with her magic or they will suffer. They take her back to their room to help her. Yet, they are both drawn to her. They try somethig a little dangerous, that ended with something they didn't expect. They take Raven to her gym class, but what happens next with Raven and her magic leaves her in terrible danger, Will she be able to survive and will she get closer to any of the men that call to her. Will they be ble to help her as things get more dangerous for her and her learning her magic.
The end of the book leaves you wanting book 2 immediately, the book slowly introduces you to Raven, her men and her magic.
Look forward to book 2

IF YOU WANT A GOOD ACADEMY BOOK TO READ WITH GREAT CHARACTERS, YOU NEED TO READ THIS!!
What the heck Alexis Calder? This book was amazing. I am so happy that I came across this book to read. This book just jumps right into the thick of things and does not let up. You never know what to expect. I love Raven, she is very strong willed and independent. She does a good job maintaining the tough girl status but when alone to her own thoughts she breaks. She has to attend an Elite school because of something that she does by accident. While she is there, she meets. Luka, Ben, Matt and Zack who are definitely hot and feel something towards her. So that makes things pretty interesting to say the least. Raven only found out about this world and is trying to figure out what is going on with her. The only thing she knows is that her magic is untamed and she needs to learn how to wield it. Will she get the answers she needs? Will anything happen with the guys? We do get some answers but not all. Be prepared for the ending. That shocked me. Like seriously when is book two due to release cause I need answers. AHH you are KILLING ME HERE ALEXIS!!
Needless to say this story is well written with great characters. You will definitely want to add this to your Academy reads list.
I came across this "book" on audible plus and thought it might be like Zodiac Academy; so obviously, I was not expecting this "book" to be literature. I just expected it to be at least mindless entertainment. But, my god, this was unreadable. How and WHY they even narrated this "book" is beyond me.
The girl is obviously not like the other girls...actually, she is barely a one dimensional character - she has no feelings beside being horny. Like, girly murdered two people, found out about magic world, forced to attend the magic academy but not even half hour after her world turned upside down she is thinking about fucking a guy... and then she does????? She also has men thinking about fucking her every. single. line.
I feel insulted on behalf of all the fictional characters in this "book".
I will never get why fanfics have bad reputation because even the smuttiest and shortest one shot I have ever read was 10 times better written and had more to offer than this "book".
According to Amazon, this is 139 pages, but it felt absurdly short. I felt like I was maybe halfway through the story when it ended, mainly because it felt like there weren't any major plot points (outside those related to relationships) between the beginning and the end. Also, one of the last lines of dialogue didn't make sense to me, so that threw off the whole ending for me. I'm not sure whether I will continue the series or not. It will probably depend on how desperate for reading material I am when the next book comes out.
*I received a free copy of this book which I voluntarily chose to write an honest review for.
What a thrilling start to a new series! We meet Raven just as she is sent to the Academy through no choice of her own after an unexpected incident. She has no clue that magic exists let alone anything else and let alone have any of her own. Thrown into the deep end without a raft she must figure things out quick if she wants to survive. Full of magic, twists, and turns that will keep you hooked until the very end. I really liked it so I give it 4/5 stars.
“I’m not sure you’re ready for that answer yet, kitten,” he said, winking.
With the note GAG
I read a lot of romances, I've read a fair few in the year of 2019 that were reverse harem books; some work some don't. When I DNF a book, I don't do it lightly I HATE not finishing a book; its frustrating and sad. This was just boring. There isn't a lot of room for a developed story line and I could already tell this book was going to be full of holes with 'mysteries' that probably won't ever be solved.
*WARNING* contains sexual situations Raven thought she was a normal 21 year old woman until she killed a couple of men by setting them on fire. Now Raven goes to a school for magic elites. This is a lot like other academy books. This first one is more of a "meet the characters", leave the reader with multiple questions, and give a nice build up to what can be expected in the next book. I think this is a great start.
Very enjoyable! I couldn’t put it down. Kind of academied out but this one sounded interesting. I thought it would be more of a fast burn but ended up being a bit slow. Looking forward to more of a relationship with the guys and see what kind of powers the h has. Little cliffhanger but nothing crazy.
Academy of Elites is an exciting read. I felt for Raven because she was being kept in the dark about a lot of things like what she is. I loved her and her males cant wait to read the next book
Wow, what a terrible... I can't even call it a story; it's like the outline of an idea of a story.
Good 1) I liked Makayla
Bad 1) Storytelling was bizarre; a bunch of unrelated scenes would be squeezed into a day and then time would jump to a week or longer later and completely ignore any type of natural development, continuance or fallout from the earlier scenes 2) Nebulous world-building; there was the academy, magic police, various supes, humans and none of it was fit together or fleshed out 3) Vague setting; there was a head masters office, hallways, classrooms, a dungeon dorm and a tower dorm and again none of it was fit together or fleshed out 4) The sadistic teachers and life-threatening punishment made zero sense at an elite academy; sorry no one wealthy is going to send their heirs to a place where they are going to be bullied by their 'inferiors' and/or might be killed, ending their line 5) There was no plot or plot-driven storyline; just the female lead going to class and being horny 6) Action scene was thrust in towards the end without any type of build-up 7) The female lead had no personality 8) The female lead was as dumb as toast; ie. 9) Lead female is very disrespectful of one of the male leads 10) The male leads were indistinguishable and their defining character/personality appeared to be horniness 11) The romance-driven storyline was all insta-lust and arrogant posturing 12) The male leads all declare her 'mine' in their heads and think of her in a jealous/possessive manner while she barely interacts with them, let alone engaged in any type of courtship with them 13) More bizarre, There is no follow-up on this. 14) Definitely not sex-positive
This was good although you can tell from the chapter breaks it was just one long story broken down into book chapters as an afterthought. Especially when you get to the end, as it’s not really an ending. It reminds you of a tv series where the episode ends abruptly and then a voiceover says, “tune in next week to find out what happens to Raven and her…”,you know, those kinds of vibes. LOL But thus far, it has good bones so I will continue on to the next installment.
My take: The main female character, Raven, is thrust into a magical world she never knew existed, but instead of asking questions about this world to the new friends she has made in the three weeks she has been there, she doesn’t. She went to the mall and played strip poker, but hasn’t really tried to learn anything other than what’s taught in class…and she’s a whole semester behind, not to mention an entire lifetime behind since everyone else grew up in magical families.
She knows other supernaturals exist and that there are other schools, but she hasn’t asked about them. She has already discovered that what she does know from human stories and movies is inaccurate. She’s been told she’s a mage (not a spoiler since I think it’s basically in the synopsis of the book) yet she doesn’t really know what mages are nor what powers/elements they can control, other than fire.
This lack of information seeking after being thrust into a new world reminds me of another series that’s about 8-9 books in and the twin heroines, fae type, didn’t bother to try to learn anything. I don’t get the logic, especially when your life is on the line.
Anyway, I still enjoyed all the little drama and smexy parts and will continue on. My notes and highlights can be found on Goodreads. Happy reading!
