Origami is something about which I have always been curious. You see these marvelous creations made with these tiny pieces of paper seemingly only the fly. How is this done? It looks so complicated and intricate.

So, the very title of this book intrigued me. Can it really be simple? Can I really do that kind of thing? Well, I picked up a copy in order to look behind this mysterious curtain and see how the magic happens.

Russell Wood in his book, Origami Made Simple, does just that. He takes the mystery out and helps the reader, step-by-step, build these marvelous creations. Frankly, some of the more intricate designs are beyond me, but I have hope that one day I may be able to do them, too.

If you, like me, ever wanted to try your hand at Origami or just see how it is done, then this book is for you. Wood starts slowly with very simple designs which are really easy to do. In fact, they are so uncomplicated you can visualize the steps even before taking out your paper. The diagrams are clear and show you all the steps. Then, fold by fold, he increases the complexity as you have mastered the previous design.

It is a wonderful book for beginners, but even someone who has been doing Origami for a while, might find something new. But more importantly, the veteran will find a book to help those he is introducing to this art how they, too, can learn to do Origami.

Upon request the publisher sent me a copy of the book to review.

This book has simple instructions for easy origami patterns, and begins with the simplest of them all, a little paper house. Gradually the book moves from simple designs to more complex designs that require more folds. Everything is explained with detailed instructions and diagrams that clearly show each fold.

I love the cute designs! There are cats and birds and fish and butterflies, a teapot, a basket, a man fishing, a praying nun, and even a sphinx and a snail. The instructions for some of these are so simple that a child could do them, and yet they are still interesting for adults.

My favorite design is the origami for a little paper piano! I HAD to try it out immediately, because I am a pianist, and it turned out great! It was so easy to do, and I drew a little piano keyboard onto the paper with a pen. So fun!

You don't have to have "real" origami paper to make these. You can just cut some printer paper to be square and start folding! The diagrams are so easy to follow!

I was given an opportunity via the publisher to read Origami Made Simple: 40 Easy Models with Step-by-Step Instructions. I chose to review this publication and my opinion is freely given.

I am living proof that prior knowledge of how to fold paper the origami way is not necessary when using Origami Made Simple. I was able to complete the first three (house, cup, and swan) in around five minutes and had so much fun doing it. It was so relaxing and completely satisfying to finish folding one of these cute creations, from animals, to flowers, to inanimate objects.

The author does a good job of explaining the history of origami, the different terminology and symbols for folding correctly, and the tips for success. The pages are brightly colored, with step by step instructions for each origami project. I was impressed with the book as a whole, as it provides hours of fun for people of all ages and skill levels. I would not hesitate to recommend Origami Made Simple as a gift for a child or an adult, as this crafting book has wide ranging appeal.

The first thing that jumps out at me about this book is that it doesn't come with any practice paper. Most of the origami books I've had before include a few tear-out pages that you can use to get you started. But, don't worry! That's really the only downside to this book. It includes step-by-step, easy follow directions for 40 different projects. The models become progressively more difficult throughout the book. It starts with the author's touching personal connection, and it proceeds into some background info about origami in general. I like that it gives detailed instructions in the beginning and points out what to look for as you're working through the book. Most projects are also accompanied by helpful troubleshooting and variation tips. I've never been able to progress much further than the very simple whale, so I was impressed by my ability to follow the instructions in this book and make some new things!

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not influence my review.

With the contents and page numbers provided at the beginning it is easy to find a specific project. After the introduction you will find three main chapters:
Easiest * Easier * Easy-ish OR to explain it more clearly:

10 Steps or Fewer * 15 Steps or Fewer * 25 Steps or Fewer

Diagrammatic and written instructions are provided for each project. VERY clear and easy to follow. If you have never done origami before or if you are looking for some fresh ideas this is a GREAT book to help you. A definite keeper in this house. Grab some paper and start folding. I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher. Thanks, Liz

This might be one of the better origami books that I have read and I have read quite a few. Origami Made Simple divides the models up by how many steps it takes to complete the final figure. It includes tips on troubleshooting and a helpful intro to origami as a whole.
