Edited because I reviewed the wrong book. I am an idiot but I shall fix this. Bear with me…
OK! I have moved the review I originally posted here in error to the correct book! Now to review this one…
Brandon Easton delivered a pretty good story in this volume and even made the Shocker a credible threat again. The parts of the story dealing with Miles Morales’ relationship (not that kind of relationship, you perv) with his new teacher Mr. Schultz were ultimately (see what I did there?) very moving. The only weak part of the story was that the Shocker’s secret identity was so blatantly obvious that it pushed my suspension of disbelief to breaking point that it took the Spider-Kids so long to figure it out.
The artwork was OK; nothing wrong with it but there was nothing to elevate it above the rest of the pack.
Miles, Gwen, and Peter are having a tough time stopping a new villain in town, the Shocker. Gwen and Miles are also a bit distracted because they have a big test coming up and are trying to cram for it.
I like that this adventure with the Spideys has them referring back to their science knowledge to know how to defeat this villain. I felt like the flow of the story could have used one more edit. There are some frames that shift the scene or topic of discussion rather quickly and it was a bit disorienting. I flipped back a page to make sure I didn't miss something at least two times. I haven't had that problem with any of these Marvel Action: Spider-Man's before this volume. It won't bother the insatiable middle grade Marvel/graphic novel fans, though.
Notes on content: I think there were two minor swears. No sexual content. Some superhero/supervillain battles that didn't result in any injuries.
