Rate this book

This longing for intimacy and the community of true friendship is rooted in our very nature. Yet the number of shallow social interactions that we pour ourselves into on a daily basis ends up consuming our time and drawing us further away from the very type of community and friendships we need.

Break Bread Together will show you how to change these destructive patterns and nurture true community. Join Jessica as she guides you through Jesus's last meal with his disciples. See how he cultivated these friendships and how you can develop new ways of bonding with your friends by following Jesus's example. Enjoyed my time spent with this book, and have placed it on my re-read list for deeper study. Personally took away quite a few lessons, and pray that all who read are blessed with the same.

In Break Bread Together, Jessica Herberger shares some truths I've known for nearly two decades - not all friendships are the same, friendships aren't always organic, and breaking bread with people builds community among friends. In sharing these truths, however, the author uses the Last Supper as a teaching tool - and it is a brilliant add to my understanding of friendship, relationship and community.

Her premise is simple: "It turns out the Last Supper is not just a beautiful picture of community. It is an actual road map showing us how to nurture a Breaking Bread Community in our own lives!"

Again, what a brilliant and meaningful comparison.

Break Bread Together is organized somewhat like a good bible study. The author shares her personal history and struggles, some scripture and insight, then follows it up with questions and a guided prayer. It is a great format for the topic. The road map is laid out in well-scoped chapters, each based on a different aspect of the Last Supper scriptures, and covers topics on initiating friendships, expecting hurt, sharing biblical wisdom and building lasting communities of love. Lots of good stuff in here.

The writing is engaging, the topic deeply considered and the suggestions meaningful and complete.

I loved this book. It would be an amazing book club read, or even a great part of a small church group wanting to go deeper in relationship with one another. Likewise, it lends itself equally well to a more intimate and personal read as part of a greater understanding of Jesus, the Last Supper and our mandate to be in community with others. Definitely a five-star read!

I am grateful to have read Jessica Herberger's book, "Break Bread Together: Finding True Friendship at the Last Supper". She shed light for me about living intentional in friendships that I pray for; something I have never thought about before. Her writing is gentle, but real. Her words pierced through to what I am going through friendship wise, leaving me viewing it from a different vantage point ~ through the lens of Jesus. Jess entitles a section in her chapters, "Meet Me At The Table", which has helped me to reframe what friendship really is. Her words have enabled me to view and hold my friendships in seasons of change as not something negative but something still wonderful to celebrate. I really needed the life that has been brought to my heart through reading this book.

I would recommend this book for a small group study, as Jess suggests. I also have found it valuable for just me, as one person reading through her life giving pages.

Jessica Herberger connects Jesus' love for and friendship with his disciples in a poignant and timely way. As someone who grew up in church, I've read the stories of Jesus' interactions with his disciples in their callings and the Last Supper countless times, but never through the lens of friendship. This book encourages us to invite people into friendship with us and to love deeply - all through the reflecting Jesus to those around us. A passion for deep friendship was rekindled in my soul. As we all come out of a time of greater social isolation, this book helps us remember the importance of friendships.

Do you think you know all there is to know to have a deep, meaningful friendship and build a community of friends you can count on? I thought I did until I read Break Bread Together by Jessica Herberger. In a world of social media platforms we can lose track of what a true intimate friendship is like. We may even feel lonely or like we have no friends at all. If we build a small community of people who really know us and we them, we can encourage one another and be there for each other in this over-committed and over-stimulated world we live in. The author uses examples of deep friendship modeled by Jesus at The Last Supper, her own experiences, and research to show us just how powerful a true friendship can be.

I am shocked at how relevant and timely this book is!

As a culture we need this book to help us learn to navigate relationships. We have gotten so busy, and often quite lazy, in our approach to friends. It is whoever we are thrown together with at the ball field. Or it's just the people we happen to see at church.

Break Bread Together gives practical tips for inviting God into the equation. I am so thankful for this book and I believe there are going to be testimonies years from now of relationships that grew as as result of this book

Break Bread Together explores the ways Jesus modeled friendship with his twelve disciples through the Last Supper. The idea of studying Jesus' friendships was a completely new and refreshing way to see the Last Supper, its intimacy, the shared grief and shared joy, the service modeled, and truth shared. This book will give you a vision on the purpose of friendship and will encourage you to chase after that vision! I would definitely recommend it!

Breaking Bread Together couldn't be more refreshing and timely! It unpacks God's beautiful design for deep and meaningful friendships, explores their purpose, and addresses many common hindrances to the development of such friendship with solid approaches to overcoming them.

Jessica Herberger's time spent in the Word and seeking hard after God's heart is evident in the truth-saturated pages. She shares of her own life experience in raw and relatable ways. This well-written combination draws readers in to receive the kind of help we all need to love others like Jesus does.

We, as the Church, need this message. The ripple effects of women who have taken it in will surely be felt in the best ways from our own hearts on out through our churches and communities.

Break Bread Together: Finding True Friendship at the Last Supper by Jessica Herberger was a book about intentional friendship using the Last Supper as a guide.

It can be discouraging with all the electronics and "let's get together" never happening. The book takes a closer look at praying for guidance in seeking out deeper friendships. It encourages following Christ's example of meaningful relationships.

It was an interesting read, modeled by Jesus at the Last Supper, with the author's insights. The basis of building a community of long lasting friendships.

I received a complimentary ebook copy from the publisher, through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

I received an ARC from Leafwood Publishers via NetGalley. This review is my personal opinion.

In this book, Jessica Herberger takes the last supper as the perfect example of how friendship should look like, with an honest and candid story she opens up on her journey in finding her community for breaking bread, the practical and easy advice she has followed and how we can put them into practice. I like that this book gives you a clear idea on how friendship should and could be with the help of God and a clear determination on upon op and let people in, the importance of letting go the ideas or maybe who we think can’t be part of our community for breaking bread. This book could be a great opportunity to share with friends or maybe to make new friends.

This is a book on forming and maintaining friendships based on Jesus's example, as described in the Last Supper. I loved how the author drew so many profound truths out of small details that I had previously overlooked in these scripture passages. I also appreciated that this book does not add additional pressure to go out and find the type of friendship described in these pages on our own, but rather to pray about and trust God to bring to mind the people he has for you. I think this is an important topic and a need that is unfulfilled for many, and this book does a beautiful job of addressing it.

This book speaks to our innate desire for true connection and looks to the beautiful example of Jesus’ friendships at the Last Supper as a guide. Breaking Bread weaves cultural knowledge, scriptural truths, and creative ways we can pursue close friendship into a heartfelt book. Jessica shares vulnerably about the power of ‘breaking bread community’ in her life and I am eager to continue implementing what I learned into the relationships around me. This would be a great book to read together in a book club group too!

This book has changed my perspective on the Last Supper. Y’all the way we sweat and coax people with gifts and all to get people to be our friends (picture the work we put in) is the same way we should work for a relationship with God. Such an uplifting book.
