Set in Iceland, this vintage second chance story hinges on a ridiculous misunderstanding. It's so ridiculous that it earned the story a one star demerit.

Besides the tension between the H/h there is a party of 8 going on an expedition to a glacier. The geologist hero is leading. The heroine is the official photographer. There is an Icelandic couple who run a catering/expedition business and they are the hired help. There is stereotypical Texan who is financing the expedition with his pushy wife and beautiful twice-divorced daughter to play the OW role. A junior geologist rounds out the team so that the hero can be jealous of any attention he pays to the h.

There are lots of adventures and a lovely travelogue. The OW and junior geologist get together. The obnoxious Texan gets pneumonia so he is mercifully airlifted away.

The romance between the H/h was okay - and probably the weakest part of the story.

Best moment of romance-reading life:

I discovered a romance novel SET IN ICELAND and with a hero who is a GLACIOLOGIST.

OOOOOOOoooooooooOOOOOOOOoooooooooh my God!

So the cover is super dorky and has NOTHING to do with the book. Fine.

So...the conflict is a super dorky Big Misunderstanding and the hero's subsequent reaction is ridiculous.

Is it bad to say that I liked the secondary characters better than the hero and heroine?

By far the best thing in this book is the geology, photography descriptions, and details about Iceland.

The one sort of cool crazy thing that happened--when the hero tackled the heroine before a geysir eruption killed her--was one of my favorite things EVER in a romance novel. Totally crazy! AND GEOLOGY-RELATED DRAMA! Looooooooove it!

Unfortunately, the romance and plot are pretty pathetic.

However, because ICELAND and GEOLOGY and TACKLE GEYSIR SCENE, I'm still giving this 3-stars.

And now I want to go back to Iceland!

This plot follows the he believes she betrayed him/she believes he betrayed her trope.

The setting: Iceland. The best part of the book.

The characters: Mostly likable. The estranged lovers meet again on an assignment. Despite being at odds with each other, they work together well and don't let their quarrels get in the way of their professionalism. Most of the side characters are likable as well, save for the client taking the fact that Icelandic women keep their own names even after marrying because he doesn't approve of feminism. (They have to assure him that they had not kept up this traditional naming system since the 12th century just to scare him off with feminist ideas.) The side plot with the client's daughter is interesting.

The main plot: Oh, boy. When they were newlyweds, Beth ran out on Allan for reasons that get revealed later in the book. Eric has no idea why Beth would have left him Which comes to the really stupid pothole.

I rarely enjoy second-chance romances, and the setup for this one is particularly preposterous. However, the action of the story takes place during an expedition to visit a remote glacier in Iceland. The assortment of characters involved, and the challenges of the expedition, from flat tires to financing, made for great reading. The core romance plot is thin, so there some secondary romances to add interest and situations more sympathetic than the main characters. However, what gripped me most was the portrayal of Landrovers on the job, back when they were working SUVs and not status symbols.
