Stranded by a storm at a posh country inn, Elizabeth Boynton meets Gerald Finch and his sister. Gerald is handsome, charming and wealthy enough to devote himself to the study of seventeenth century witchcraft. Just returned from a trip to England, he is in need of o secretary. Elizabeth accepts the job. This ideal position loses some of its charm when she discovers that two previous secretaries accidentally drowned. Anthropologist Bob Gottschalk, also at the inn, is alternately suspicious and suspected—trusted and feared. The mounting mood of fear and danger is developed in step with the rising fury of a storm ...
This was a good story in itself - It just had a few derogatory comments about women, which I decided to ignore due to the fact this was written in 1965. However, the author also thought that witches were evil - misguided soul that she is!
Starts out promising, but drags on. There are some fun spooky parts, but the villain is so obvious and the main character does not see it! Also, not enough witches.
I liked this book - it is an older view of things...copyright is in 60's. However with the more seemingly simpler writting I found myself scared by what I myself was creating...which is something a writter should work at...making the reader truly get into the story enough to create what happens next
