This book, "Мать", by М. А. Горький, is a replication of a book originally published before 1908. It has been restored by human beings, page by page, so that you may enjoy it in a form as close to the original as possible. Книги на русском языке #ReadRussia
First of all, shoutout the MLK library for having this book in Russian. The government is funding my socialist radicalization and they don’t even know it (jk).
On a serious note, I read this book during the anti foreign agent law protests in Georgia and it was really eerie seeing so many parallels between the pre revolutionary Russia and the contemporary world. Not only have things in Russia itself remained basically the same throughout all the different regimes, they have also remained the same in many other parts of the world.
Some dynamics are stinger than time - class divide, perpetual cycle of poverty, silencing and punishing of open criticism, and most of all the hijacking and weaponization of legal entities to further the prosecution of the innocent. Courtrooms become theaters - judges perform assigned roles by enacting pre-trial verdicts. Evidence and defense become pointless in the eyes of justice when the system of oppression is exposed and under threat. Police and special forces become reincarnate of the oppressor - a direct reflection of its brutality.
The book was amazing in terms of story telling but I wish it had talked about “the truth” more directly, rather than solely relying on the nurturing and empathetic character of a mother to garner emotional response from the reader.
