Monica McKayhan started writing when she was twelve years old, always dreaming of becoming a published author. Finally her dream came true when her fi rst novel, As Real As It Gets, was published in January 2005. Since then Monica has written several adult and young adult novels.
She attended public schools in Kansas City, Kansas, where she played basketball, was a member of the pep squad and was on the debate team. She was vice president of the French club and was also one of four speakers at her high school graduation.
Monica now lives in the Dallas–Fort Worth area with her family. She enjoys writing, reading, hanging out at Starbucks, shopping and being with family.
There is a lot of real life material in this 4th installment of the Indigo Summer series. Adjusting after a divorce and having a drug-addicted parent are a couple of the themes addressed in this story. It's hard enough as a teenager, but carrying burdens such as these compound a young persons experience. Well-written, filled with real emotion, and definitely worth reading.
"Jaded" By Monica McKayhan was an okay book to me. I think the switching of the characters was a bit confusing, I know a lot of people that agreed with that too. This book did not really hold my attention, but I did read the whole book. Could have been better :/ . - - - xo YANA ;]
The book was really good!! The story gives an idealistic view on how real life can effect the youngest of teenagers in the most unfortunate situations. In the book, Jade and Terrence understood that concept.
Jaded Jade is now living with her mother in an apartment close to her dad’s. Not *exactly* what she wanted when she wanted her family to be closer. But the one good thing in her life is her boyfriend Terrance or as she calls him “Chocolate Boy”.
Terrance, however, is going through hard times. He’s holding down one job (at a repair shop) and raising his younger brother and sister and providing for them as best he can.
Terrance at the age of 13 became a man when his mother (Arlene) decided she still wanted to live the life of a single person (with no kids) and stay gone for days at a time.
The next day at school, Jade and Indi catch up. Indi gets Jade invited to the mall with her friend Tameka to check out Homecoming dresses. Then they head to tryouts (which Jade has already luckily gotten a spot for mid-year). Quincey (Indi’s ex) tells her he and the rest of the homecoming team voted for her to be Queen.
Jade and Indi find dresses at the mall. Jade texts CB and gets him to ask her to the dance. Terrance stresses about taking Jade to the dance, not having electricity, and feeding his siblings that night.
A neighbor invites them to dinner and it looks like at least that’s one worry down. But then Arlene shows up full of excuses but she tries to make it up by having a cookout in the park.
Tee calls Jade and she brings the dance up and Tee feels guilty because he thinks she deserves better. His mom though says he can ask his aunt to borrow her car. As they pack up, she promises she won’t leave again. Tee knows better.
As the girls discuss their college plans and futures with their boyfriends, Jade decides that she wants to be a lawyer.
The next day Jade’s Dad and sister pick her up and he has his new lady (Veronica) in the car. At his house, he tells Jade and Mattie he and Veronica want to get married around Thanksgiving. Jade walks out and decides to head to Terrance’s house. Afterward, she and her Dad talk it out and he tells her he wants her to give Veronica a chance, and she decides that she “might” be ok after she hears Veronica stepped back in order to let her Dad decide where he wanted to be.
Big Tony (Terrence’s boss) hooks him up with his Caddy, money for tickets for the dance, and a suit. Indi does get to be Homecoming Queen. Jade is a big hit with Arlene and Brenda. A
t the dance, Marcus gets Tee to agree to try out and Brian (Tameka’s date) gets Tee and Marcus to spend the weekend at his campus (Morehouse).
When he gets home, Arlene is there and she tells him she wants to do right for real this time. Terrance agrees to skip school with her Monday and go to a halfway house.
Jade and Veronica bond when she takes her to Spellman College, shows her she can dance, introduces her to her sorras, and then Jade gets to dance on stage with some of the students. Spellman is now on the top of Jade’s college list.
After Tee drops Arlene off at rehab, then he goes back to school and lets Marcus convince him to try out. Jade hears some rumors about Tee’s mother being a drug addict and him selling and using drugs from two girls in her complex.
A lady shows up at Tee’s place that says she’s from Child Protective Services and got a call that some kids were abandoned. Luckily Aunt Brenda shows up and takes the lady’s card and says she’ll pass it on to her sister.
Terrence makes the first cuts and as he and Jade walk home, she confronts him about what she heard. He tells her the truth about everything and she’ tells him to give her a minute.
Tee makes the team. But when he goes to tell Arlene she isn’t there. When he gets back Trey and Sydney aren’t there either. Luckily Arlene has them and they’ve just been out getting pizza. Arlene came home with Brenda told her that Child Protective Services were snooping around. She’ll still continue to go to the classes tho.
Tee tells her his good news and she finally tells him she’s proud of him. Jade gets her phone back and decides to call Terrence and apologize, but he doesn’t return her texts or call. He’s by this point moved on from her and thinks she’s no different from the other girls that walked away.
He, Marcus, and Brian are spending the weekend at Morehouse. After Brian gives Marcus and Tee a historical tour of the grounds, Tee decides he’s definitely gonna be a Morehouse man.
At a frat party, Tee meets a girl named Jennifer and they bond over family issues. She gives him her number. The girls decide to sneak to one of the parties. Indi sees Marcus dancing with a girl, but it’s squashed because then they dance. Jade sees Terrance and they dance. Tameka tho sees Brian kissing another girl and goes off on him.
Terrence and the rest of the team, win their first game and Arlene takes him out to celebrate. He expresses wanting to find Big Tony’s kids and if not inviting him to spend Thanksgiving with them.
Veronica and Jade bond on her birthday over nails and asking what Jade would like for Christmas and her birthday. Jade says a stereo and for Terrence to treat her the way he use to because lately she’s noticed a difference. Veronica tells her to give him space and if he’s not for her then she’ll find someone else. She also invites him and his family (and the rest of her friends and their families) to spend Christmas at her place
. Terrence finds Big Tony’s son, but he’s not interested in having anything to do with his father. Tee leaves a message anyway to Veronica.
His mom tells him to be honest with Jade and Jennifer when he confesses to her that he’s now feeling Jennifer and not Jade (but he still wants to be Jade’s friend). A
t Veronica’s, Jade is finally able to ask Tee where they stand and he just tells her they should take it one day at a time. Terrence decides Christmas isn’t the right time to break Jade’s heart.
He asked Jenniffer to be his girl and she said she’d give him an answer after Christmas. Then Big Tony’s son, daughter, and grandkids show up and he and Tee get emotional.
Tee breaks up with Jade officially and tells her there’s someone else. But in the end, they still agree to be friends and he ends up walking her home.
My Thoughts (Jade): Mostly the center of Jade’s story was about her acceptance of Veronica. The part where Veronica takes Jade to Spellman to a dance practice and takes her to lunch and then later tells her she can pick a big gift for her birthday and Christmas were my favorite scenes because Veronica reminds me a lot of my other mother by the way she’s always going out of her way to do thoughtful and caring things for me. Even the part where they get their nails done is something we have also done together. I don’t remember ever having the same kind of resentment for my stepmother (that’s not to say I didn’t). But it just goes to show that you never know until you give people a chance. That’s what I liked most about this story!
I could also relate to Jade’s vent about how mother’s really DO NOT need to pick out your clothes because half the time they pick what *they* like for you and not necessarily your taste.
When I think about how hasty Jade was with Terrance, when I initially wrote this review, I thought Jade was wrong. But then on this read, I think Jade wasn’t wrong to say give her a minute because from my experience even as an adult it’s VERY hard to be in a relationship with someone that works 24-7 and has other commitments. The “busier” they are, the less time they have and effort they put forth. So, Jade should have a say so if that’s something she wants to deal with.
But I do think it was wrong of her to ghost Tee while she was making up her mind. But Jade was a bigger person than I would have been in the end because you just tell me your heart is with someone else but you still want to carry on like nothings changed? NAH! Tee would have had to really had to give me a minute. I don’t do the friend thing with ex’s, but then again all mine were pretty much asses.
(Terrence) I actually knew a lady that was like Arlene named Debra. I’m glad Arlene got it together. I may have thought in the beginning she was sorry and pathetic but she really did change and try to be a better mother.
I admire Tee in a lot of ways. What I admired most was his honesty. Tee was more of a man at 16 than ANY of the men I dated who rather than do what Tee did and tell me about their situations didn’t tell me a damn thing. So I respected Tee.
I respected that he was man enough to step in and hold it down for his family when his mother took off.
I don’t know why I was thinking that Jennifer had a boyfriend which is why she didn’t answer Tee. Then I wondered if there was another book where we found out her answer. I really can’t be too mad at him for getting with a girl that understood him, but why do I think Jennifer will end up giving him some kind of excuse when she gets back. Why couldn’t she given him an answer right then?
Who I felt really bad for in this tho was Tameka. This girl has the WORSE luck. Later on she’ll fall in love with a guy named Vance who’ll get her pregnant and cheat on her too, Rating: 7
The story that I am currently reading is about a young teenager name jade Morgan. Jade parents are divorced and she doesn't like to see them separated . All she wants is for her parents to get back together again. Jade finds it very difficult to accept her father's girlfriend Veronica as her stepmother. As she get's to know Veronica her whole perception changes. She realizes that Veronica is not a bad person after all. Jade also faces some tough challenges with her boyfriend Terrence .
Overall this novel was credible and real life situations that happens in our everyday lives. This story was interesting to read it had a lot of excitement and drama that I think would captivate the readers attention.
Jade wants her parents to get back together instead her dad proposes to his new girlfriend, who asks Jade to be a bridesmaid. She has a new boyfriend, Terrence and he thinks she should give her soon to be stepmom a chance. Terrence is cute and cool but he seems to be hiding something. He is always busy and never invites Jade to his house. Terrence’s mom is never really around. She leaves the house and doesn’t come back for days straight, leaving Terrence to take care of his little brother Trey, and his little sister Sydney. Terrence works part time and weekends at Big Tony’s Automotive Shop trying to provide for his family. Terrence is basically the man of the house, he juggles school and work and he can’t do what most other kids his age are doing like sports and hanging out with their friends. Jade has 2 best friends she does everything with Indigo & Tameka. One day after school Terrence was getting off the bus and he saw someone leaving in a truck then he realized that the electric bill was long over due. He found a red cooler in the garage and he ran to clean it and get some ice he then put all the food they had in the cooler so that it wouldn't spoil. He put fresh batteries into the stereo and he found a match to fire up the grill and get the charcoal nice and hot so he can make dinner for him and his siblings. Jade texted Terrence about a homecoming dance but Terrence had way too much on his plate from figuring out what they would eat for dinner and how he would pay the light bill. Taking her to the dance meant that I had to buy a suit, rent a car and still have money leftover to take her to eat afterward. When Terrence came home from work his mom was at home and she wanted to have a picnic at the park. Jade went over to Tameka's and Indigo did too. They hung out talked about their future goals, colleges they want to go to, painted their nails and jumped on the trampoline. When Jade’s dad came to pick her up he was with Veronica, when they got home they had an announcement. Veronica announced that her and Jades dad were going to get married. Jade was shocked, she thought her family was getting back on track and that her parents were going to get together. After they broke the news to Jade she ran out the house and started headed towards Terrence’s house. When she got there Terrence was caught off guard. Terrence went to work at Tony’s and Tony saw that something was weighing heavy on Terrence and asked him what was going on and Terrence explained how there was a homecoming dance coming up. Big Tony told him that he can use his favorite car, the red Cadillac, he gave him 50 dollars for the dance tickets and he said he can hook him up with the suit and shoes. It was time for the dance and all the girls were getting ready. When there dates showed up all the parents took pictures and then they headed their way. Terraces mother, Arlene made him promise that he would bring Jade back to his house so she can meet her. Arlene took some pictures and then they headed off to the dance. At the dance all the guys were talking about sports and they suggested that Terrence try out for the basketball team. They talked about Morehouse and other different colleges as well. Terrence agreed to go to some frat party at Morehouse. After the dance Terrence went home and he was surprised to see that Arlene was still there. Terrence and Arlene talked and talked and and Arlene told him that she wanted to change and be a mother to her children. Terrence went to the basketball tryouts and he thought it would do him no harm to try out and he didn't think he had a chance at making the cut. Terrence waited for Jade’s dance practice to end and then he walked her home. When Jade got home her sister, Mattie was there all alone and she started yelling at Jade because she was “scared.” They went to the pool were Felicia and Angie were gossiping. They started talking about Terrence and his mother. “Somebody said that Terrence’s mama is on drugs,” Felicia announced. “Said that him and his brother and sister pretty much stay at home by themselves.” They said that Terrence sells and/or uses drugs. When Jade got home her mom was angry that she wasn’t there when her sister came home and that her chores were not done. Terrence ran home from Tony’s because there was a car in front of the house. They called Aunt Brenda and she was on her way over there. The lady from the car came out and rang the doorbell. It was Child Protective Services and they were looking for their mom but their mom as in a rehabilitation center. The next day at school Terrence found out he had made the first cut. Jade stopped to talk to Terrence about what Felicia and Angie said. She asked him and he told her the truth about everything. He told her that he would understand if she walked away like all the other girls he has dated. When he went to the frat party at Morehouse he met a girl that shared the same situation as him and they exchanged numbers and talked forever on the phone. He found the same love in this girl as he did with Jade and they both understood each other.
"Jaded"By:Monica Mckayhan was a really interesting book.I really enjoyed the book because I could relate to the drama that was happening in the book.Monica Mckayhan really knows how to entertain her readers.Jade the main character really likes Terrence she calls him chocolate boy.Jade who has never got so much attention from boys like the attention Terrence is giving her .She is used to her best friend Indigo getting all the attention because Indigo is lighter and she is skinny .Jade is darker and also heavier .But Terrence did not care about that .Jade is really mad because her parents are getting a divorce and she thinks it's the end of the world .When her father brings back his old girlfriends Jade rejects her then she finds out that Veronica is not that bad she and that she dances just dances just like jade .But what Jade does not know is that Terrence is basically taking care of his siblings because his mother is never around .You would have to read the book to know how everything turns out.I would recommend this book to someone that likes to read about drama and teen problems this book was great I can't wait to read more of Monica Mckayhan's books
Jaded is a young adult book told in two different POVs--Jade, a girl who is struggling to deal with her divorced parents and life in general, and her boyfriend, Terrence, a guy whose druggie mother is away so much that he is forced to work to support his younger brother and sister. Ashamed of not being able to be a normal teenage boy, Terrence keeps his family life hidden from Jade.
I thought this was an interesting, realistic book. I have to admit, I liked Terrence a whole lot better than Jade. Terrence was hardworking and humble while Jade came across as spoiled and bratty most of the time. Even though I felt for her concerning her parents, I felt she had more of a "me" attitude than I would have liked. She did get better, though, and seemed to grow as a person, but it seems that Terrence grew even more as a person when his mother comes back and he has to struggle with whether he should put his trust in her or not.
The story was interesting and the characters were realistic and mostly easy to relate to. I really liked this one.
I thought that this book was amazing and that everyone should read it. Terrence a teenage boy, is having to become a man a little to young. His mother "Arlene" is on drugs and he has to look over his 2 younger siblings and be the man of the house while his mom is out partying, gone for weeks. His girlfriend Jade is going through something totally different! Her dad is getting married to another woman! That does not sound to good for her. Terrence has not advised Jade about his difference in life because he thinks, like all other girls, that she will run away because she can't handle it! Will Terrence reveal his different in life? Will Jade be there? What will happen? This is SUCH A GOOD BOOK!
This book was about a girl name Jade...Jade was 14 years old and she was living in New Jersey with her sister Mattie and there brother at the grandma's house, and they wanted to move back to Atlanta Georgia and her daddy and mother wasn't together but they were still sleeping in the same room together and her mother got an apartment the same place there daddy live at. This boy name Terrence likes Jade and is taking her to the homecoming dance and they are always texting and talking in school. Jade and her parents still wasn't together but they were working on it to get back together and to start a family all over again.
I Thought this book was really good. In The end, Chocolate Boy found a college girl, and Jade accepted that, because she wanted to move on and find herself. This is a good book to read if you like urban teen fictions because this is what it's all about
