When a man is shot dead on Martha Kleen’s doorsteps, Clint Wolf’s first order of business is to identify the victim. This is no easy task, but once the man's identity is confirmed, Clint is left with more questions than answers. He develops a few suspects early on and one of them is a ghost of a man. However, there are more than a few pieces of his crime puzzle missing, and tying one suspect to the murder could be a challenge. Will the burglary of a local hardware store lead to the arrest of the guilty party, or will it muddy the waters of Clint's investigation? Either way, Clint won't stop until he gets his suspect.

I have to say another good book by this writer. As usual I liked the main character and all secondary characters who are his friends. I thought it was a decent story maybe a little below average for this series. I thought it was a little flat at times but it was still good. I thought he caught the vibe of the area where they live pretty good. I had the wrong person pegged as the bad guy lol. I normally do not worry about that stuff I just go with the flow. Once again read this series in order. I say give this book a spin and the series a spin.
I love this series this is book 13 out of 30. Susan is the chief of police. Clint is the chief of detectives and they keep their town safe. I can’t wait to start the next one.
A cleverly plotted, murder-mystery storyline with some fine twists
A very good, quick read police procedural with a twisty, serpentine storyline. Author BJ Bourg neatly sets up the story, and then as the storyline progresses, he keeps the twists coming. Detective Clint Wolf and Chief Susan Wolf deal with several unpleasant suspects who live in Mechant Loup. As in any small town, news travels fast, and neighbors, who keep up with gossip, have information that help the police.
I keep reading this police procedural series, because I enjoy following the police protagonists as they investigate the murders and a robbery. This a series that I love reading whilst box-ticking to find the culprits.
There are some grammar and homonym problems that should’ve been caught by an editor. Recommend to police procedural fans.
If you are looking for an excellent book to read, this is it. The action starts at word one and continues till the end. If you like books that keep you guessing you will not need to look elsewhere, as ever the plot is really good and the writing even better. But , get the most out of this series of books by starting with book one, you won't be disappointed.
I'm retired with much time to spend reading and watching YTs. This is my first review of Clint Wolf series. I waited because I saw this series as being potentially good, but the early stories left me mildly disappointing since I've never met a real person or character in a book who was so altruistic, so moralistic, yet so deprived of the basis for this moralistic righteousness. Since Clint is not religious, and he is not particularly woke, maybe Clint's DNA is one of a male chauvinistic warrior. All sarcasm aside, I have immensely enjoyed BJ Bourg's plot development using the techniques he had learned as an experienced detective. The nostalgia wave epiphany for me on this Clint Wolf #13 was the enjoyment I experienced as a kid in the 50s watching the everyday hard work of Detective Joe Friday of Dragnet fame achieve an arrest through persistent application of truth by separating the wheat from the chaff. IMO, a young person who is thinking of a career in law enforcement as a detective will learn more about the true nature of crime enforcement from reading Mr Bourg's books than any book written by Arthur Conan Doyle, who wrote from an entertainment only perspective. Take home message: Ignore the moral preening of the protagonists - enjoy the process of a successful procedure to arrest the criminal.
I finally figured out what has been annoying me the last two books. Clint. While I love the glimpse in his family life and love seeing him and Susan as parents, and would love to see them having another baby, but he has been too whiny and wanting to spend more time with his daughter but I always putting work before her then whinnying about that decision that HE MADE! I get he is the only detective but the last two cases Amy has been helping, and her overtime has been approved. He can have her wait for testing or you know while he is waiting on results GO HOME! The author goes above and beyond explaining how Amy has been doing well and getting overtime but still Clint doesn’t use the extra help to you know, help him!
He needs to delegate some tasks to Amy, or wait until morning to interview people. Like why you showing up at 4 am to interview someone? It’s crazy. He makes conscious decisions about staying at work to wait on a report then in the next minute complain about missing his daughter. It’s exhausting. I loved the idea of two chief’s working together, married and raising kids it is something we rarely see in procedure books but this author hasn’t shown a good balance. I get it, he is the only detective and he has no unsolved cases but darn make better decisions or you’ll have no family.
I cannot say enough good things, about BJ Bourg's books. Clint Wolf and all the characters, is like catching up with old friends. I love the way Clint meticulously goes through all the evidence and how he fits the people to the puzzle. In this book, Clint is thinking he has the evidence and the killer all figured out. But, at the last moment, even with the suspect in custody, it just doesn't fit. Following a gut feeling, he searches for another piece of the puzzle. Sometimes my mind is ahead of the story. Thinking I've figured a clue, before Clint! But, a couple pages later, I find out how wrong I was. Good thing I'm not a detective. I'd be arresting all the wrong people. If you like a good mystery, some laughs and a close group of people, who have each other's backs, then read BJ Bourg's books!! Again, thank you for having your books in Kindle Unlimited.
In this thirteenth installment of the Clint Wolf series, a frantic “shots fired” call is just the beginning of what should have been an easy-to-solve murder. Instead, the titular detective keeps running out of leads… and uncovering more crimes.
There’s not as much character development in this book (which I miss a bit) as in others, though to be fair, we’ve been with this cast through twelve earlier books. What’s lacking in emotional growth is made up for in arc progress. I saw these changes coming and believe in book 14 they’ll come to fruition. These are pleasant changes I was rooting for and hope they take root.
Watching the plot develop was fun despite the crimes being disgusting. I didn’t figure out all the twists until the end, which I found quite satisfying.
Another solid novel in the series that has me hurrying to the next one.
I really enjoy this series. I particularly like the way police procedure is explained and the details given. I feel like I a, getting valuable insight as the author is in a position to know what he’s writing about.
The mystery here is a good one. Who’s lying, why was the victim killed, who did it, etc. As usual there are several good suspects and lots of good red herrings. I was disappointed in Cliff that it took him a while to come to one conclusion as it was the first thing I immediately thought of. Can’t believe he wouldn’t have given that he seems so knowledgeable.
Looking forward to the next book. Not sure how I got so far behind as I binge read the first nine when I discovered this author!
The last Clint Wolf book I read wasn’t quite up to the standard of the series so far. Don’t get me wrong as even a substandard BJ Bourg novel is still a damned good read. “But Not Forespoken” continues the downward trend. As a police procedural it is competent, but it never really ignites. A recently arrived pastor is gunned down outside the home of one of his female parishioners. She’s the queen of denial but obviously knows more than her prayers. It’s up to Clint to conduct his, as usual, methodical investigation and get to the truth. It’s ok but I will have completely forgotten it in a couple of days. 3 Stars.
It maybe a small town, do you really know your neighbors, or the new preacher that comes to town. A woman who loves to flirt with men when her husband is off shore.for several weeks, a minister who has one of his flocks he is seeing while his wife isn’t with him, The secrets another has for doing, it pays good, and one angry wife who thought it was something else. A master at telling a story that has many twists, and suspects, until he finds the one thread that reveals all in this small town. A great plot.
Another well thought out plot giving many twists to keep guessing.
Putting together a murder puzzle takes the ability to be suspicious of everyone. Looking at everyone as a murderer can be tiresome, especially if you have to keep them under surveillance all night. When the puzzle pieces fit and the full story is known, the sense of relief is tempered with the sadness for the victims.
This Storyline was put together to cause you to put the puzzle piece together by picking up on the clues. It is also a story with a cautionary tale. Cheater never Win and Preacher shouldn't Cheat. I was guessing until the last chapter of who killed Father Ezekiel and why. All my suspects were cleared. So I guess you will have to read the Book to get the answers.
I have read some 12-13 of this author’s books. This is once again an excellent thriller from the very beginning. Clint and his wife, Susan, and the small team of Merchant Loup’s (Louisiana) Police Department solve a very difficult and intractable murder crime. The identity of the actual killer is completely surprising and unexpected.
Plenty of mystery in this book. Clint keeps the reader guessing with his many thought processes.
Danger does not stop our hero from going out on a limb , while endangering his own life to solve a murder mystery. This book is a page turner from beginning to end.
Great story and characters! Loved the interactions between Clint and Grace!!! Also enjoyed Amy and Clint working together. Can't wait for the next book to come out!!!
I read this book. It was so good again! Mr. Bourg has a way with bringing life in to his story. And his characters have flaws. Makes it better to relate to them. I couldn't figure out who the murderer was!!! Write more soon! Cindy
I just love this series, I have read them all and can't wait until the next one. It doesn't take Mekong to read these books, because once I start I can't put the book down. I have read other Bj Bourg books, and the are good, but the clint Wolf series are my favorite
This is a great book and series. These books in this series are always great mysteries. The suspense is great . I hope the next book in this series will be out soon. I highly recommend this series.
I absolutely love this series. The town, it's people, the main characters, they could all be our neighbors & live in our home towns. Thee murder mysteries always have a few twists & turns & the endings are always surprising
A local minister is found dead on the front porch of one of his parishioners. When beginning the investigation Clint and Amy find out the shots were fired about two hours before the 911 call.Lots of twists in this mystery and I never guessed who the killer was.
Great mystery story as to who the perp could be in a situation with a minimal number of suspects or people with an opportunity to do the deed. As usual, Clint muddles his way through the case to get a surprise solution at the very end.
Clint is called on to investigate a murder when a pastor is shot dead, leaving a parishioners' house early in the morning. He uses Amy as an assistant in this fast-paced story with interesting twists.
This was a good story that started with a murder and wrapped around a burglary and infidelity. The characters were again well written, but there were moments that just were not as good as usual. The ending was different, yet predictable; still a good read.
This book was fantastic just like all the rest. There’s so much action and twists and turns. It was hard to put down. Love the characters. Can’t wait for a new one.
