santa’s been a very naughty boy

although the author departed from the pattern i discovered of who the killer normally is, the identity of the killer in this volume was still predictable. there were still some unpredictable twists, some ott twists, and some just plain eye-roll inducing. all in all, this volume could and should have been shorter.

2019 reread: Remembered most of the things that happened. but a few things are just not possible, like . For someone who're all high & mighty when we first saw him, Akechi is just an observer here...

Ironically, for a case that largely hinges on drugs (and make no mistake, the take this series has on drug use is so black and white it could be used as the backdrop for a Chaplin film), this is like Kindaichi Case Files on pure cocaine. It takes the excesses of the previous stories and leaves them in the dust for an appropriately theatrical masterclass in melodrama.

There’s a murder mystery being held at a hotel over Christmas and Kindaichi, Miyuki, and Saki (who was introduced in the previous volume) arrive at the request of Detective Tawarada (from The Mummy’s Curse). ‘Mystery play turns real’ is one of my favorite tropes for stories like this, so we start off on the right foot from the get-go.

The bodies start hitting the floor shortly thereafter and the howdunnit becomes the really important part, as this might be the easiest Kindaichi so far to guess who the killer is. I cannot imagine that the choice of culprit is not an homage to Hercule Poirot’s Christmas, which had a similar murderer in a case set at the same time of year, so huge bonus points for that.

Mix in a complete and thorough non-solution to the mystery that explains everything and then suddenly doesn’t, a locked room scenario, a false accusation, a personal tragedy for our heroes (that’s hilariously undercut in later stories with a jaw-droppingly insane story justification), an epic denouement where Kindaichi throws down the solution in stellar fashion (though he totally swipes from his playbook used in The Opera House Murders, it’s still great), and a tragic backstory and explanation that Shakespeare would have said was ‘a bit much’ and you have some classic Kindaichi right here.

This is the kind of Kindaichi I love - ludicrous and suspenseful and the most delicious nonsense. Miyuki even helps point the way to the solution this time. It has some ‘of its time’ attitudes towards drugs and homosexuality I could live without, but they don’t detract from the plot at all.

Excellent return to form after the disappointment of the last case. I’m realizing the series is often fun, but more uneven than I remembered, so it’s important to appreciate when it gets it right.

Each case in this manga is a stand alone mystery, so it's not necessary to read the series in order enjoy the individual stories. That said, a couple of supporting characters here appeared in earlier volumes so there are some minor spoilers for earlier mysteries.

Kindaichi finds himself helping the police again, but this time by special invitation. A theater troupe is holding a murder mystery event over Christmas at a fancy hotel, but the danger might be real according to a threatening letter from the Red-Bearded Santa Claus. Between eccentric actors, police investigating two different cases and a peculiar room with a strange ten year old contract there'll be plenty for him to test his intellect against.

The setting and cast are quite strong for this volume. The parallel of having an interactive murder mystery performance going on within our murder mystery story is nicely used, and the hotel itself is almost another supporting character. The theater troupe is filled with distinct, strange people which helps keep things engaging and tense as Hajime tries to gather information and untangle the events happening around him.

More of the mystery than normal is beyond the reader for this one, and as a result parts of the end do come a little out of nowhere. There are also a couple of points that push suspension of disbelief rather far, even by the previously established dramatic standards of the series (which I personally never had an issue with in prior volumes). That said, the core mystery is still built logically and the identity of the culprit is solvable, so everything's still very much in the realm of fair play towards the reader. Also the way things connect and some of the twists along the way are very interesting, and the more outlandish touches tie directly to characterization and/or true motivation for someone's actions.

The Santa Slayings pushes things a bit here and there, but overall it's a intriguing, tense mystery and yet another respectable entry in Kindaichi's resume of detective work.

I like these comics, has different side from detective conan. Conan is a genius senior high school student with good academic recordx but not with Kindaichi. Kindaichi only genius when he had dealing with a case, a criminal case. Kindaichi had a life time rival that appear as a handsome guy and have a good carrier in police department. His name is Akechi.Kindaichi is already end fars from conan...hehe, thanks god!

I like the background story.
I still think that some of Kindaichi case is more made sense than other crime detective manga.
And how the story always disguise it into some kind of mystery is always a thrill.

This one is one of my favorite, very much unexpected.

Finish was a little too out of nowhere, even for a Kindaichi book, and I feel like it didn't really nail the balance between mystery and shonen comedy this time around. Still fun.

赤ひげのサンタクロース、真っ赤な部屋と印象が強い。シリーズの中で、真犯人が他の人に罪を着せて自殺させるのはこれが初作品か。以降は同じパターンが何度か見受けられる。
