Of Chalk and Flint: A Way of Norfolk Magic is a celebration of the county of Norfolk and its Nameless Tradition of magic and witchcraft. The spiritual energy which informs and powers this magic wells up from the land itself and from the Chalk and Flint which have shaped the landscape, its flora, its fauna, its culture and its history. This book therefore weaves a rich tapestry of herbs and creatures, of gods, dragons, Fair Ones and merfolk, of spells, rituals and seasonal devotions. It retells some of the old stories which shape the work of the Tradition and honours the ancestors who inspire it. Yet it is a book for the present moment, and shows how working closely with the land can be an integral and vibrant part of modern life. While the book is focused on Norfolk, the principles of the magic explored here are applicable anywhere in in the world. Thus, this book provides a valuable resource, both for those with an interest in Norfolk, and also for anyone seeking insights into natural magic, witchcraft and working with the power of the land.
A delightful read that gives a great overview of Norfolk (English/Anglo Saxon with a Norse influence) magic and traditions of the area. I also found it very helpful to make me deeply think over the magic held in my particular part of the country and tune in with the Lord and Lady of my own corner of the world. Some great ideas for ritual, and useful herb lore. A gentle and friendly writing style. I would highly recommend it.
Connecting to the magic, energy, and wonder of where you personally live is so important. Each place has special ways of working. Things particular to that area of the world depending on the local landscape, the plants that grow there, and the animals who also call it home. So naturally I was absolutely thrilled when I found the marvellous Val Thomas and her wonderful book all about the ‘Nameless Tradition’ of Norfolk magic - the place that I call home.
It was so lovely to read a book that I can connect to so deeply. I’ve lived in Norfolk my whole life, visited many of the places mentioned, and had so many “ahhh yes, I do that too!” moments while I was reading. I grew up with Jack Valentine bringing gifts and tricks on February 14th, combing the beach for hag stones and ‘elf bolts’ (which I knew as ‘witch’s fingers’), eagerly watching the harvest coming in each autumn (getting stuck behind a tractor is a common reason for being late around here), and am constantly digging up wonderful chunks of beautiful flint as I do my gardening. Norfolk runs deep in my soul. But even in you’re not from this magical part of the world, I think this book would still be a wonderful addition to your shelves! Much of the things mentioned can easily be practised and enjoyed no matter where you call home! . Val talks about herbs and their uses, celebrations and rituals, the Fae & the Gods of the land and how to work with them, magical tools, ways to incorporate magic into your everyday life, and so much more. All peppered with interesting tales and anecdotes from Val’s own life and personal practice.
This book is an absolute delight to read, and I can’t wait to put what I’ve learnt from it into practice for myself. It’s renewed my love for my little corner of the world. And in confident that everyone could do with a little bit of Norfolk magic in their own craft too.
amazing book from a good friend of mine, so yes I am biased but then if I didn't like it I wouldn't put a review. Val takes you through the countryside and seasons so that you want to close your eyes and be there, except you wouldn't be able to read the book then!
Absolutely wondrous and powerful book of magic and knowledge rooted within the very lands that I call home. An honour to read and learn from Val through these pages.
So full of magical knowledge of Norfolk. This is one of the best books ive ever had tbe pleasure of reading. Vals knowledge will stay with me for the rest of my life hopefully i can pass on this knowledge of this beautiful county to others. Theres magic everywhere! ✨
