Mielenkiintoinen aihe tällaiselle sarjamurhaajista, FBI:n profiloinnista ja hyvistä rikostarinoista kiinnostuneelle.
Alkuun hiukan puuduttava, kunnes päästiin lukuun jossa kerrottiin miten FBI alkoi profiloida esim. sarjamurhaajia.
Kirja on tavallaan myös muistelma.
Ainakin Netflixistä löytyvät ”Mindhunter”-sarja perustuu tähän kirjasarjaan.
Tämä kirja oli osa yksi, joten lisää on varmasti tulossa.
Netflixistä löytyvää sarjaa on kaksi kautta, joista toinen kausi on mielestäni aivan loistava!

Tämä oli todella mielenkiintoinen kirja. Hienoa, että on ihmisiä, jotka ovat perehtyneet sarjamurhaajien sielunmaisemaan, jotta heidät saataisiin nopeammin kiinni ja mahdollisesti estämään uusien sarjamurhaajien syntyminen. Käsittämättömät ovat sarjamurhaajien mielet.

Kattava kirja sarjamurhaajan profiloinnista. Mukaansa tempaava tyyli kirjoittaa, ja mielenkiintoinen aihe. Jonkin verran koin, että olisi voinut vähän tiivistääkin ja jäsennellä hieman toisin tätä kirjaa, mutta pääasiassa nämä seikat eivät haitanneet. Kiinnostava kirja, tai sen ensimmäinen osa.

Kirjan voi jakaa karkeasti kahteen osaan: John Douglasin lyhyeen omaelämäkertaan, jossa hän kertoo taustoistaan ja päätymisestään FBI:n käyttäytymistieteen osastolle sekä osioon, jossa Douglas esittelee profilointimetodeja käyttäen esimerkkinä enemmän ja vähemmän kuuluisia murhatapauksia. Näistä jälkimmäinen on todella mielenkiintoinen, ei pelkästään murhatarinoiden osalta vaan myös käyttäytymispsykologian kannalta. Alkuosa taas on tylsähkö ja hidaslukuinen ja Douglasin muistelmissa on jopa hieman omahyväinen vire.
Netflixin mukaelma tästä kirjasta, Mindhunter on ollut yksi suosikkisarjojani, ja vieläkin harmittaa ettei sille ole tiedossa jatkoa. Kirjassa ja sarjassa on yllättävänkin paljon yhtäläisyyksiä, vaikka esimerkiksi Ed Kemperin haastattelut saavat sarjan ensimmäisellä kaudella huomattavasti isomman roolin kuin kirjassa.
En ihan täysin ymmärrä miksi kirja piti suomennoksen yhteydessä jakaa kahteen osaan. Ehkä asia selkenee kunhan olen saanut toisen osan luettua.

Odotin tältä kirjalta ehkä vähän toisenlaista lähestymistapaa, joten oli pieni yllätys että kirja oli sekoitusta tietokirjaa ja omaelämänkertaa. Osuuden, jossa puhutaan sarjamurhaajista ja päästeen kunnolla sisälle heidän psyykkeeseen ovat todella kiinnostavia. Samoin kuin se, miten FBI ja rikosprofiilin tekeminen on muuttunut ja kehittynyt. Harmi vaan ne omaelämänkerralliset kohdat olivat tylsimpiä osuuksia ja tekivät kirjasta rönsyilevän.

November 5, 2024Uraa käsittelevien kirjojen ikuisuusongelma, eli se, että ihmisen nuoruusvuodet ennen uraa ei ole kauhean kiinnostavia.
Itse profiloimisen käsittely on mielenkiintoista. Myös mielenkiintoista miten pystyy heijastelemaan Hooverin ajan ennakkoluuloja, mutta ei täysin.

This was overall facinating stuff read. Though when it comes to stereotypes in profiling are without no exception the not social types, loners with trouble socializing etc. Would be interesting to know how many there are which do not fit in the profiles and which get off the radar every time because there has ot be. Also surprises me that it's claimed that most innocent would protest the loudest. I wonder is there some cultural thing but you would think that innocent person would have nothing to fear when being questioned. Also you would think that one with clear mind would totally want to pay attention to what others are speaking about and what they gotta say.
Writing is from I point of view and done well. There are tons of examples about how not to do it and this wasn't one of them. If it had been that book had learnt to fly and you would learn all about it. My only and biggest issue with profiling is how genericly stereotypical it the potential perp can be. Also the stuff is from 80's. Had been interesting to learn about 90's and newer stuff. So, keep in mind while you read that it focuses mainly on to the late 70s and 80s. As well as author actually is indeed who they say they are and done the things they write about. They are very good at telling about their life and line work keep it as not so uptight dry writing. -Could they leave out focusing on their female colleque's appearence that much I think that was not so correct work behavior from 80s. Are couple of lines enough to call it obnoxius? Nope. Overall leaving it out of the book had made it overall better though. Another thing that I wondered though I think that's where author's age made it funny was to repeat sentence three times in one chapter. It was off first time and definetelly was off with it's seconth time and only made sense by the last time it was used. Question is that were those lil sidenotes meaning that them parts needed to in that chapter but editorial slept and ignored them? -And translator could have left them out too if seen that they do not really make no sense overall with the rest of the writing. -Really. Two of them made no sense.
Overall the book has that vibe that you have a penpal or read through your grandpa's diary or even better have tea with your grampa and they tell you stories about how they came to be who they are and about their work. It has that old man's vide on the writing. Also the writing speaks about history and developing profiling.
What comes to some example cases them perps and cases are kept neutral which actually is good. There are enough people who dwell in gore and bloody details and underline how evil these people who have commit them crimes are. On that swamp this neutrality to things is welcomed.

Sujuvasti kirjoitettu teos sarjamurhaajien ja muiden väkivaltaan syyllistyvien ajattelukuvioista ja motiiveista. Kirja on jostain syystä jaettu kahteen osaan suomennettaessa, joka tekee tästä ykkösosasta myös vahvasti agentti John Douglasin elämänkertaa...sanoisin, että jopa hieman jaaritellen. Mutta tapauskertomuksiin päästyä kirja muuttuu totiseksi todeksi ja välillä oli pakko pysäyttää lukeminen, sen verran hurjaksi ja huonovointiseksi olo tuli näistä tyypeistä.

Mielenkiintoinen kirja, joka toimii toisaalta elämänkertana ja toisaalta kertoo rikospsykologian kehityksestä FBI:ssa.
Tarina rullasi kyllä mukavasti vaikka ajoittain se lähtikin rönsyilemään ja sillä seurauksella yhteen kappaleeseen pakattiin paljon asiaa.
Suosittelen kuitenkin kirjaa kaikille, joita rikokset, rikospaikkatutkinta ja rikollisenmielentutkinta kiinnostaa sekä mielenkiintoinen näkemys FBI:n historiasta ja toiminnasta sen alusta 1970-luvulle.
Tarina rullasi kyllä mukavasti vaikka ajoittain se lähtikin rönsyilemään ja sillä seurauksella yhteen kappaleeseen pakattiin paljon asiaa.
Suosittelen kuitenkin kirjaa kaikille, joita rikokset, rikospaikkatutkinta ja rikollisenmielentutkinta kiinnostaa sekä mielenkiintoinen näkemys FBI:n historiasta ja toiminnasta sen alusta 1970-luvulle.

Olipa hämmentävää, että varsinaiset sarjamurhaajien profilointityö alkaa vasta kirjan puolivälissä, ja alkuosa on Douglasin elämäntarinaa ennen FBI:ta. Onneksi sitä oli ihan mielenkiintoista kuunnella, mutta aivan yhtä hyvin sen osan kirjaa olisi voinut editoida pois. Douglas vaikuttaa myös olevan omassa elämässään vähän mulkku, mutta kai on hyvä että tämäkin kerrotaan rehellisesti.

Olen aiemmin katsonut kirjaan pohjautuvan Netflixin sarjan, josta tykkäsin kovasti. Kirjan parasta antia oli ehdottomasti pureutuminen rikoksiin ja niiden profilointiin, sekä psykologiaan. Alussa häiritsi Douglasin jatkuva itsensä jalustalle nostaminen, mutta se jäi pois sitten kun alettiin kertoa itse tapauksista. Pakkohan se toinen osakin on pistää lukulistalle. 😊
