THE DEMON WITHIN: A Finn Delaney New York City Mystery, Book 2

Rate this book
Every city has a dark side… but some are darker than others.Finn Delaney hasn’t been long in his latest role as a private detective. While he’d always hoped to stumble upon a genuine mystery to be unraveled, it isn’t long before he finds himself far, far beyond his depth, and placing himself in a level of danger he’d never imagined. A murder case, unsolved for two long and agonizing years, leads him into an underworld of ritualistic evil, occultism, and Satanic darkness, operating in the murky depths of New York City and spreading its eldritch influence like a virus through the shadowed backstreets.

Despite being in over his head in ways he’s never been before, Finn Delaney isn’t alone on the case. His wise-cracking best friend is in tow, but even the comic relief he provides can’t help but be overcome by the essence of evil, seeping from every twist and turn this malicious and disturbing conundrum continually throws in their path. It doesn’t help that amid the insanity, and despite the occult rituals and supposed demonic possession at the heart of a gruesome murder, Finn Delaney knows that to solve the case isn’t just a matter of ensuring that justice is served; it’s a matter of proving his self-worth after years of second-guessing and doubt.

As the mysteries and madness unravel around him and threaten his own sanity, a man is accused, a mother is certain of her son’s innocence, and Finn Delaney has demons of his own to wrestle with. The spider’s web tightens, plots grow thicker and darker by the second, and the clock is ticking before clues tumble like a house of cards. Can our detective put together the pieces of his darkest puzzle yet, before the souls and minds of all involved fall into a widening abyss?

Do you believe in demons?

To find out, read the book entitled, "The Demon Within: A Finn Delaney NYC Mystery, Book 2" by Robert L. Bryan.

Finn Delaney is a retired NYPD police officer turned private investigator. He has solved a few cases since he started his own business. In fact, The Association of New York State Private Investigators presented Finn with the Person of the Year Award for his success in finding Chelsea Garland, a teen who did not want to be found, but ended up bringing down a few police officers involved in corruption. He also investigated Ann Wesson's husband since she thought he was cheating on her. He helped Peggy Hatley figure out about her 93 year old Dad's food issue while staying in a nursing home, etc. Patrick Delaney, NYPD Deputy Chief, is Finn's Dad. He helped Finn get his business started after Finn's knee injury forced him to retire from the NYPD.

Then Nancy Mills, the mother of Chris Mills, asked Finn to open up an investigation of her son's closed murder case. Her son is serving time in a mental institution for the criminally insane for a crime that his mother does not believe he committed. Rory Burns has also served two years in prison so far for supposedly being involved in the same crime. Rory also says he's innocent.
Finn's childhood friend, Kevin Malone's terrifying experience at the Theistic Church of Satan leads Finn to the man who is the leader, Aamon LaSalle.

Finn gets some needed guidance from his Dad's friend and Sergeant, Chris Moritz. Chris tells Finn that Aamon LaSalle is "bad news". Chris thinks Finn and Kevin should stay away from him. However, Finn's investigations take him even deeper into the case.

Will Finn solve this case and bring down Aamon LaSalle, his demonic beliefs and satanic worshipers?

Teens and adults only.

This is the second book in the Finn Delaney Mysteries and I suggest you read the first one to begin with, to gain Funn’s full background. However, if you do t want too, there’s enough info to figure it all out.

The POV is all from Finn’s point and therefore the book is easy to follow. The addition of demons makes it more interesting as Finn takes in an old case. The way he works makes him the perfect investigator and I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

Descriptions are perfect to what is required. You can imagine the scenes quite easily, which I believe is the sigh of a good writer. And I definitely recommend this book.

I would have given 4.5 stars if I could. However, there are a couple of typo’s which didn’t bother me. But the lack of scene breaks caused me to get a little confused a couple of times, hence the dropped star.

All in all, it is a god book and I await the next one in the series. Well done, Robert.

Demons

Really like this series. Couldn't put this book down. Twist and turns. Got some good laughs along the way. Was really scared at one point; no spoilers here. Gotta read the book.
