An unwanted family legacy. A town in danger. A love to conquer the past.
Edie Dutton left Kansas with nothing but a few pieces of clothing, a handful of stolen bills, and a forged letter of reference. Since then, she's found a home as a Gilbert Girl at the Crest Stone Hotel. Even despite her transgression at the hotel last fall, she has a second chance to live the life she wants. She could live happily in this valley forever, as long as she has a garden and some good books to read. But Edie Dutton is not her real name, and arriving along with all the newcomers to town comes word that her past may be on its way to put her future in jeopardy.
Fremont County Deputy James Wright has landed the perfect opportunity--keep peace in the growing town of Crest Stone. If he succeeds, he'll set himself up nicely to be elected town marshal. More than anything, he wants to do his uncle's memory justice. But unlike his uncle, he'll never let himself be distracted by a woman. That proves to be difficult when he meets the kind and unassuming Edie Dutton. Not only does she manage to cure the headaches that have plagued James his entire life, she reminds him of home. And she makes it awfully hard to focus on the work he's supposed to be doing in Crest Stone.
it isn't long before trouble moves closer to the valley. The rumor is that opposing gangs of outlaws from Kansas are behind it, stoking Edie's worst fear. She knows her new life--and her growing relationship with James-- are in danger. But when the outlaws escalate their crimes, James's life hangs in the balance. Edie must choose whether to forfeit everything she has, including James himself, in order to save his life. And when James discovers her true identity, he'll have to decide if love is worth giving up everything he's worked for.

Another exciting book in the Gilbert Girls Series. In this one we get to know Edie better. Edie has been in trouble before at the Crest Stone Hotel but no one knows all her secrets and she hopes they never will. James is thrilled when Ben asks him if he would like to be the new deputy sheriff in Crest Stone. It will put him one step closer to being able to have his dream. When Edie walks out of the Mercantile, before James has a chance to stop her, they have their hilarious meeting.I found this story to be one of my favorites, I love Edie's personality and James is the handsome cowboy that all girls dream of. Their story is very exciting especially when all the secrets come bubbling to the surface. Of course this story has romance but it also has mystery and suspense. It is also a clean story so that makes it even better. I hope there will be more books in this series as I love being able to catch up with the girls and seeing what is happening in their lives. I think it would be really fun if Ms. Cahill wrote a book about Mrs. Ruby finding love but we will just have to wait and see what comes next. A really sweet series. I received a free download of this book from the publisher. This review is totally my own honest opinion.
• My interest in this book was captured when I found out that James Wright, deputy sheriff, was being sent over to Crest Stone to provide law enforcement for this small, but growing town.
• Edie Dutton caught my interest when I found out she had a secret about her past that was haunting her present life. One she feared would ruin the new path she was treading.
• There were some twists and turns to this plot. The plot was unpredictable and I liked that.
• The minor players in this story added depth to this storyline.
• The descriptions of locations and emotions were well done, easy to visualize, and to feel. I felt a part of the scenes.
• This was a clean read and I appreciated that fact.
I was given an advance copy of this book. My review was voluntary and my opinions were my own. This was another great installment of the Gilbert Girls' series. I highly recommend this book to western romance fans who like a touch of action and suspense.
This is book 6 of the Gilbert series. They have all been an excellent read
ON the Edge of Forever, has excelled, its brilliant.
Cat, has written a MUST BUY book.
The Gilbert girls are all stand alone books. However, I personally like to read books in the order an author has written them. I would recommend all of this series to you.
Cat is a very experienced author, who knows her craft really well. Her characters, and the well researched history, just meld together, beautifully.
Please read the authors introduction to the book. It really does introduce the book, and character history really well.
Thank you cat, I have been delighted to read and offer a review for. On the edge of forever.
It seems like an opposites attract romance between a girl that had stolen in a previous book because she was blackmailed and a deputy. I thought at first Edie didn’t want to speak with Deputy James Wright because of that. I didn’t realize it was because of the secrets she held about who she really is and what she ran from. I loved that she wears glasses because I do too and that she loved to work with plants for medicinal purposes. She comes from a bad past, but she shows that anyone can redeem themselves. Although she doesn’t always make the best choices and rushes into danger, she has a good heart.
This is a great addition to the Gilbert Girls series. The author once again brings strong characters and an entertaining story filled with drama and suspense. It's a clean historical western romance that had me glued to the pages from start to finish reading. It moves at a steady pace,is well written and brought to life with her descriptive and detailed scenes. I loved and would recommend this book.
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book. All opinions in this review are my own and freely given.
When Edie Dutton assumed her name, she never thought about all the lies she would have to concoct to conceal her identity. Complicating things even further is the fact that she, daughter & sister of a family of outlaws, has fallen in love with the deputy sheriff, James. And James loves her but is afraid loving her would distract him from his job & get him killed. It's a complicated affair. This is the last book in the series, but a spinoff is out now. And the prequel is next on my reading list.
Edie Dutton came to work at the Crest Stone Hotel under a false identity in order to escape her past with her outlaw family. Deputy James Wright came to the town of Crest Stone to help keep law and order. When the two meet, there is instant attraction. Will Edie's past catch up with her? Will James's position intersect with family's treachery? Cat Cahill weaves a tight and entertaining tale that keeps the reader enthralled. The characters are a delightful blend of passion and strength. This book pulls you in and makes you root until the end for their love.
Edie had come to The Gilbert Hotel under a false name. She'd already had an issue when a newly hired stable hand knew who she was and forced her to steal money from the hotel. They forgave her and kept her on. When house thefts and other crimes started happening around the town, Edie, felt that she knew who was causing the issues. James, was the deputy who was to keep the peace as the town grew. He and Edie had a friendship that he'd like to see grow into more. When Edie disappeared one night, he knew he needed to find her. They both that secrets to share with each other.
Cat Cahill outdid herself with this Gilbert girl story. The rules of employment were simple, no courtship, no going to town alone, be on time for work, keep uniform clean. Why was it so hard to keep them? Edie had already been given a second chance. Problem was no one knew her real secret. That secret makes her attraction to the newly arrived deputy sheriff even more dangerous. I loved this story and had to keep reading.
Another exciting Gilbert Girls adventure in the rapidly growing towns in the Colorado Territories. Edie's past is catching up with her and interfering with her desire to start afresh and live a quiet life. Deputy James Wright wants to further his career as a lawman and has no time for a relationship. Life has other plans for these two and their stories start to converge in the most unexpected ways. A great page turner with lots of action and romance.
This is an excellent book full of great characters (some from past book in the series), as well as new ones. This is Edie and James' story and is a story of deception, secrets, danger, forgiveness, second chances and romance. I really enjoyed this book (and I know you will, too) and highly recommend it
I love the story, the characters and the charm of this book. This Author is fast becoming one of my favorites! I enjoy her detail and the characters she creates. They make for delightful reads that are for the most part, can't put down the book! I received an ARC of this book and am choosing to leave an honest review!
This story about Edie was good! I wasn't sure how I'd like it at first, but quickly made up my mind. Romance, adventure, and a cast of well-crafted characters made this book enjoyable for me. And the fact that it's a clean romance was much appreciated. If you enjoy sweet, clean, historical romance, then you might like this one.
A wonderful story! I loved all the characters outlaws included. This story will fully captivate any reader. Romance, mystery and danger that keeps you on the edge of your seat. I did not want this story to end, I’m so in love with it! Was given a complimentary copy. All opinions are my own.
A great continuation in the Gilbert Girls series. Each book is a stand alone book. Even though I was given a copy of this book by the author, it in no way influenced my opinion and this is my honest review.
Edie's and James's story will keep you reading non-stop until the end! Author Cat Cahill also includes an update on previous characters which keeps you involved in this group of strong close friends.
A lovely, sweet clean historical western romance, filled with love, humor, trials and tribulations. Strong characters that share a deep faith. Thank you for a lovely romance. Can't wait to read more of these stories.
Strong characters and page turning plot! I never knew who was going to come out ahead on this one. One of the sweet romance novels that kept me glued to the Kindle.
Growing up in a family of thieves is too much for one young girl so she escapes her family as soon as she can .. but can she ever truly escape her famous family ?
This is a story about a young woman who wanted to change her life. She had to change her identity in order to do that. She did and then found love. A great story.
