Very helpful! I particularly enjoyed the feature of the English translation after each story in German.

A Good Tool for Your German Language Learning Arsenal

Language Guru has a version of this short story book in several languages. I have reviewed the ones in Italian, Spanish, Korean, and French. All the books are essentially the same, except of course, for the language. They have the same introductory material. They briefly discuss the difference between intensive and extensive language learning, stating that these books are meant for extensive language learning. Extensive learning means that you try to get a lot of exposure to the language without worrying about comprehension. This is unlike intensive language learning where you look up every word and try to get a firm grasp of every nuance of meaning. There's also a section on how to use a book, including a discussion about spaced repetition learning, though they don't really tell you how to incorporate that into your extensive language learning practice.

But the heart and bulk of the book have to do with the eight short stories. Again, these are essentially all the same stories in each similarly titled book of the series, just in a different language. Sometimes they change things up with a little cultural variation (like for the food), but the short story essentially is the same between all the books. Each short story section contains the short story written in German, a vocabulary list, a quiz in German, and the English story translation. In the introductory material, the authors recommend either reading the vocabulary list first or the story first. I find the stories more enjoyable and understandable if I read the vocabulary list first. I don't set out to memorize it, but just familiarize myself with it. For this particular book, I did have a slight advantage compared to most of the other ones I’ve reviewed (except for the French one). I did take German in college some 30 years ago, and while I certainly don't remember everything, I remember some.

All in all, I think this book, as well as the other Language Guru books that are similarly titled, are a nice addition to language learning, especially if you want to give extensive learning a try.

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

This book has a very nice idea. Learn German by following a text. Follow Niklas through his life. Exercise, hobbies, work, town and city, at home, family and education: this book gives you an excellent summary of vocabulary. There are questions for understanding answering and every German text is in English as well to test the understanding. It's a nice quick read but:
No native German speaker would speak this way. The vocabulary is right but the tenses are an awful mess. My hope has been that this book is translated free speech but its just one on one translation with the vocabulary. Too bad..
I'm a native German speaker, and I can judge the translation. I've read a hundred books in English and in my opinion you can learn better with colloquial language even if the vocabulary isn't the same one on one.
It's a nice book to read but if you may talk this way to a native German speaker it will sound wooden. You can also put goo...translate on speaker it may sound the same. (don't get me wrong my English is the same. Wrong tenses, vocabulary and for sure many ridiculous mistakes in choosing the right vocabulary. But it's my own freestyle :) *smile)
This book is suitable for everyone who wants to have a little insight in German language, through a nice short story with short chapters.

Dieses Buch hat eine sehr schöne Idee. Lerne Deutsch, mit einem zusammenhängenden Text. Folge Niklas durch sein Leben. Bewegung, Hobbys, Arbeit, Stadt, Zuhause, Familie und Bildung: In diesem Buch findet man eine hervorragende Zusammenfassung des Wortschatzes. Es gibt Verständnisfragen und jeder deutsche Text ist auch noch einmal auf Englisch, zum nachlesen. Die Idee ist klasse, aber:
Kein deutscher Muttersprachler würde so reden.

A great book that helps me remind my German which is quite rusty. I liked the vocabulary at the end of each story, and I loved the questions to check my reading comprehension. The translation into English was not necessary for me, but maybe it was a good idea for other people.
