I enjoyed this one!

Outside the key plot points, I didn't know the story coming in, so the twists genuinely surprised me. The key supporting characters - Flounder, Sebastian, Scuttle, Flotsam, Jetsam - all got introductions and decent page time.

Even though the book is short - finished in less than an hour, in one sitting - it feels like a fable, touching on all the moments of significance, from Ariel's first interaction saving Prince Eric from the storm, to a beautiful centerfold of King Triton destroying all of Ariel's human-world collection, to signing Ursula's contract. I even enjoyed the small details like Scuttle's misdefinition of the fork coming back to embarrass Ariel at dinner.

Having read the original story by Hans Christian Andersen and experienced King Triton's Concert at DisneySea, I didn't know the details -- how Vanessa tried to thwart Ariel and Eric's relationship, how Triton changed the signature to his own -- so the book felt fresh, even at its length. This felt like just the right format for Disney's retelling: not bogged down by song or lengthy cut-scenes, and yet with enough scene progression and character arc to feel like a complete story.

Even with the colorful scenes taken from the movie, I prefer reading these words to watching the movie, to give me the time to savor those special moments. The writing wasn't great, though -- just sufficient!

When the publisher says tiny, they mean it! I am impressed that such a small book can still find room to tell a complete story. This book comes in a lovely slipcover with beautiful design, and the book inside is hardcovered. Inside, the story from the film is told in full, with illustrations on nearly every other page based on the film's artwork. I plan to use this as a display piece, to go alongside a matching doll I already have. I hope more such books are created; I have seen two other Disney ones, and some Shakespeare and Austen-themed ones (those are comprised of quotes, where the film-based ones retell the movie's plot).

Definitely one of my favorite Disney stories. The book is just so lovely and very cute. Sadly my copy has mixed up pages. One binding block is identical to the one before and therefore I am missing a few pages. So I'm seeing if I can get another one with the complete story. But like that I also have a unique one. ;)
