Getting divorced at 48 is hard. Almost as hard as discovering that your ancestors were part of a coven that was hunted to extinction...And you're next
Cricket Hawthorne's marriage has been on life support for the past two decades, but finally pulling the plug and starting over at dang near 50 is tougher than she'd imagined. Especially when she winds up back in her hometown of Rocky Knoll living in her Mee-maw's basement and working at her cousin's bakery for grocery money. Not exactly the life she'd dreamed of...
Just when she wonders if she's made a terrible mistake, she comes across an antique typewriter that gets her creative juices flowing. But when her fantastical stories become reality, she realizes her love life is the least of her problems. Something insidious is afoot in Rocky Knoll, and it's up to her to figure out what it is, or her marriage won't be the only thing without a heartbeat.
This is the first in a series of PWF (paranormal women's fiction) novels called The Crow's Feet Coven series, and ends on a cliffhanger. Book two will be available in April!
Christine Gael is the women's fiction writing alter-ego of USA Today Bestselling contemporary romance author, Christine Bell, and NYT Bestselling paranormal romance author, Chloe Cole.
Starting over again can be hard and Cricket is hanging on admirably when we first meet her. She's working, she has a roof over her head, and she's got family supporting her. Slightly crazy family who, it turns out, are more than they seem on the surface, but you deal with the hand you're given, right?
When an antique typewriter falls into Cricket's hands, crazy family is the least of her worries. Suddenly, her stories are coming true (or she's writing what's coming to be before it happens, more like), someone's out to steal the typewriter for themselves, and two hot dudes are on her romantic radar.
I liked the story overall, but I'm not a huge fan of cliffhangers (and this one definitely left us dangling). That said, I'm curious how things are going to work out. Cricket's in a precarious situation, her family isn't safe if the bad guys are to be believed, and ...did I mention that precarious position? Because, yeah. Things are looking grim for everyone and I honestly don't know who can be trusted (and who was just genuinely left in the dark about what was planned). I guess that means I'll be picking up the next book in the near future.
This was an enjoyable story but I didn’t appreciate the cliffhanger ending 🤣. I also felt like something was lacking, some glue to hold the elements of the story together, some believability factor, something. The characters didn’t really come across as middle aged women, as the men of interest definitely didn’t. There’s more to saying someone is in their forties than just a number...
This is a super interesting storyline and I feel could be so good. That said, it started off kind of slow and took a bit to pick up. I was definitely drawn into the story towards the end, but then everything happened so quickly and ended on a major cliffhanger. Like not just a hook for enticing you to read the second, but an absolute cliffhanger. So just a warning. I’m generally fine with cliffies, but I felt like it finally really got started and then BAM over.
I know the authors in this genre were going for MCs over the age of 40, but I had a hard time believing Cricket was middle-aged because she came across as more of a 20s-something adult. Same with the guys. I absolutely loved Mee-Maw though! She’s a hoot and probably my favorite character in the novel. I’m undecided if I’ll read the second novel. On one hand I want to know what happens with this current story arc; on the other, I just didn’t connect with the characters that much.
A new to me author, I read this book as it was part of the 13 #PWF books. I enjoyed the storyline, world building & the characters. Me-maw has me LOL more than once. She’s a hoot. Parts of the story dragged a bit, while a few parts seemed rushed & thrown together. Overall a very good book. Read it in one sitting. Looking forward to more books in this series. #PWF #FAB13 #amreading
Wow, I almost feel guilty about this review after reading the 5 star reviews. But 2 stars means 'disappointing' and that's what this story's ending was. The characters were good (loved Mee Maw), the mystery was good, I was really enjoying the story and characters and planning on getting more from this author until . . . the last chapter. Things suddenly just 'happened' with little to zero explanation. It's as if there was a hard page limit and 3 or 4 times the information had to be packed into the last few pages. Or maybe the author ran out of time and rushed through the last chapter. Then, to make matters worse, it ended in a cliff hanger Not just a tease going into the next book of the series, but a major cliff hanger. I agreed with the good reviews up until the disappointing end of the story.
New to this author, I absolutely loved this story and every little thing about Cricket and her family! A magical story with an intriguing and suspenseful storyline containing a predictive typewriter, a couple of hot guys, an crotchety old but awesome grandma, a secret group stealing magic and so much more! A fab over 40’s heroine finding her way in this exciting tale and that ending OMG I need book 2 like now please!!
Writing Wrongs begins the Crow’s Feet Coven series, and fair warning (which the book descriptions on other sites also states), this ends on one heck of a cliffhanger leading into the next story in the series.
After the divorce, Cricket moved back home with her Mee-Maw for financial reasons, selling the house, dividing the profit, that sort of thing. It wasn’t supposed to be for long but thanks to a clueless ex-husband’s foot-dragging and mistakes it’s taking far longer than she ever thought. Her kids are off to college, she’s on her own for the first time in years and what she wants to do with her life now is finally only her choices. Or it might have been if she hadn’t run into a weird old-fashioned typewriter at a flea market, one that not only called to her but will change her life forever. The rest of Writing Wrongs you should discover for yourself for it would be very easy to let vital bits of information slip.
While I enjoyed Writing Wrongs, for the most part, it didn’t really grab my complete attention until the second half. I’m usually pretty good about the need for world-building in the first story of a series, but this time the story simply moved slowly for me. The characters are interesting, the plot devious where it needs to be, smooth at other places so it’s a good story that fell in that in-between place of I didn’t love it but liked it enough to want to continue the series, eventually. I will be frank and say that I am not in any way a fan of cliffhangers – and this one was a huge one. That may have affected my reaction to the story. *shrug* I’ll be picking up the next one due out in April of 2020 for I want to see how this one actually ended before sliding into the next one.
I read Writing Wrongs through my Kindle Unlimited subscription. This title will be leaving KU after a short time, and may now be available on all platforms.
Writing Wrongs just wasn't a story that grabbed me at all...
I wasn't keen on most of the characters I know the main woman was meant to be in her forties but honestly, it read like girls in their early twenties the only character I like was MeMaw she was great the rest just fell flat. I wasn't even halfway through when I knew I couldn't read any more in this series but I would make myself finish this one just to see if it got any better but sadly it didn't. The plot was slow right up until the last few chapters and then my worst nightmare and cliffhanger ending well that just spoilt the whole book... The storyline felt like it had threads that could have been tied off in this first story and some that could have continued into more books in the series without a cliffhanger ending and parts just felt unfinished I got to the end and thought wow that was just disappointing so many things were left hanging and unfinished.
A New Beginning, Possible Romance & Supernatural Goings On!!🙏😍💻🕖😲✨ (Read using Kindle Unlimited) Writing Wrongs: Crow's Feet Coven Book #1
An engrossing & surprising read.😲🙈😢 After coming to the unpopular conclusion that life was too short for mediocrity, Cricket decides to end her marriage, in the hopes she'll find a great love, like she saw between her Parents!!💘 Even if she never finds it she realises she can't keep on living a half life!😔💔 She moves back to her old home town & lives with her MeeMaw in the basement, she raised her after her Parents both died.😢
She's working in her Cousin Zoe's Bakery. They were brought up more like siblings & they're bestfriends.😍 At a local flea market Cricket is drawn to an old-fashioned typewriter, she can't resist the urge to buy it. Later that night, after a frustrating phone call with her ex husband, a burning desire to write her first story takes her over!☎😤💻 The following day at work a breaking News Story comes on the TV, she nearly passes out in shock - it's exactly the same as what she wrote the night before, down to her characters name, after she tippexed her ex's name out & changed it, She's completely horrified!!😱😭
Things from there get stranger, creepier & definitely more supernatural!!✨😲 Her Cousin & MeeMaw are eventually convinced & agree to help her!👍 Whilst all of this weirdness is going on she meets a new guy Patrick, they definitely have some heat!😉🔥 An old flame is also back in her life & it seems like their connection is stronger than ever!!🔥💘🔥
I really liked this story, it held nothing back, emotionally.👍💥 Cricket & Zoe were really authentic.🙏😍 The cliffhanger ending is a killer, Its so intense and twisted!!🙈💥 I'm really looking forward to book #2 😃🌟
Another entry in the Paranormal Women’s Fiction category, Writing Wrongs has a lot going for it. Cricket, our MC is 48, may be a little older than some of the other protagonists in the PWF universe, but she’s in the same situation. Except unlike the others whose husbands have died or cheated, Cricket decides to step away from her marriage herself. She moves back to the little town she grew up in, with her Meemaw and starts work for her cousin’s bakery. Not so glamourous fresh start. However, when she sees an antique typewriter, something in her knows that its for her.
I really enjoyed the characters in Writing Wrongs. Meemaw is abolutely hilarious and Zoe, her cousin, brings sass to the storyline. I had trouble connecting with Cricket. She had a LOT of internal dialogue which may have been the reason why I had trouble, but she felt much younger and insecure. Cricket has not one, but two men that are suddenly interested in her but they are strange enough that it’s obvious something isn’t quite right with them.
Cricket Hawthorn is a 48 year old divorced woman living with her Mee-Maw. Just trying to get back on her own two feet again, starting over is tough. While working at a flea market with Mee-Maw she comes across an old typewriter that she just can't take her eyes off of. Maybe she should try writing? She always loved writing little stories, maybe she could actually make a living at it. There is something strange about the typewriter though, what she writes seem to come true. Not all stories in her mind are happy ones. All of a sudden she becomes popular with the opposite sex, one from her past and one new man. Horrible things are happening that makes Cricket decide some research needs to be done on it. She enlists the help of her best friend and cousin Zoe along with Mee-Maw to figure it out before anyone else gets hurt. Everything points to witchcraft. Could she be a witch, do they even exist? If it does and she is how can she control it? Be warned this book ends on a horrible cliffhanger!
I have been reading the stories written by a group of authors about the MC being in her 40s and having to start over. This is one such work. I will admit that in the beginning I wasn’t sure I was going to like this as it was a little slow and I wasn’t sure I was going to like the characters. However, once the story starting picking up speed, I came to love Mee-maw, Cricket, and Zoe. Cricket has to live in her grandmother’s basement while waiting on the sale of her house, and she comes across a typewriter which gives her powers. What follows is an exploration of those powers and the ones who want to take them. I think the author, though, needs to expand the world a little bit by telling us of the flavor of the surrounding areas. It feels like the South, but it would be nice to know more about it to give an idea about how the people think. However, this is a fun book, and since the book ended on a cliffhanger, I’ll be waiting for the next one. Recommend!
Writing Wrongs: A Paranormal Women's Fiction Novel (Crow's Feet Coven Book 1) by Christine Gael is a Paranormal story that is fun and crazy. 13 Fabulous authors got together and decided that life begins at 40 and over and that these women needed to have a voice. Christine gave us a unique look at one woman who is finding her way in the world after leaving her marriage. She also finds that she is now the proud owner of magic with no idea where it came from . Unfortunately, with it comes a danger that won’t stop and is steeped in history which makes for a very interesting story line that has twists and turns you don’t see coming and I loved the characters, Cricket, Mee-Maw and Zoe without even trying they get themselves into situations they may not survive. Just when I was so engrossed it stopped and now I am waiting with baited breath for the next one.
Ok, so I was not going to get this book because the author did, and I give her credit for this, disclose that it ended on a cliffhanger. But her book was part of the paranormal women's fiction group, a group of 13 authors all releasing on the same day, advertising together. I read all the other 12 books and they were excellent, 5 star reads. So, thought I would try this one too. And I am glad I did. I loved the story. An excellent story about a woman in her 40's, newly divorced, left with nothing, and having to move into her grandmother's basement. While it starts off as a pity party, soon morphs into a paranormal adventure, or awakening. History is uncovered, and bad guys start popping up. The end left my heart beating fast. And I cannot wait for the next book.
Writing Wrongs was such a fun and interesting ride for me! I loved Cricket, Zoe, and MeeMaw is my hero. There's just something about a grandma type that's tough and no nonsense and I adored her. While Cricket is trying to field life after a divorce, she's thrown through the wringer as she discovers her witchy powers. Surrounded by a quirky and supportive family, the breadcrumbs the author leaves on every page is definitely a trail worth following. There are also a few side characters that you aren't sure should be trusted, but figuring out who was genuine was a thrilling puzzle to solve. Even with that gut wrenching, cliffhanger of an ending, I'll be looking forward to April and Book 2. Definitely a story that was a pleasure to indulge in!
This book is from the #PWF genre. I decided to give this book a try because I was hearing great things about it. Here are my thoughts...
What I didn’t like: -Too wordy. A lot of inner dialogue -I didn’t feel a connection with the main character Cricket. -Slow pace at the beginning. For me it didn’t pick up till 60%. -Cliffhanger ending
What I did enjoy: -I absolutely loved Mee-Maw. She was a hoot and I was able to connect with her. -The story certainly picked up at the end but it felt all so rushed towards the end but I did enjoy that the book was finally going somewhere and we were getting answers.
I’m not sure if I will continue on with the series...I would like to see what happens next and may give the next book a try. Like I said the book isn’t that bad just the inner dialog unfortunately didn’t interest me and it may have been because I didn’t connect with the main character.
Ok this was different, but a good different. Cricket purchases a typewriter at a flea market then her life gets turned upside down. She lives with her Memaw whom she loves and has a cousin who is like a sister. She has two hunks vienging for her time. What more could a forty something want? Read and find out. You'll enjoy it like I did.....
The premise was good, but I felt no connection to the characters. It felt like the story moved pretty slowly and I kept waiting for something to really snag my interest. But I kind of kept going to just finish the book. I enjoyed the last 2 chapters or so, when action picked up, but then was left with a cliffhanger.....
A new author for me... I really enjoyed the book... Cricket is almost 50, divorced and living in the basement of her grandmother's home...not an ideal life but she is making it work While helping her grandmother at the market she finds an old typewriter and thought how cool is that...maybe just maybe I could write a book...the typewriter is calling her name She starts to write and the next day her ideas for stories becomes reality...say what? The typewriter is some magical item, it takes some convincing and some serious events to finally convince Cricket and family But there are strange goings on in Rocky Knoll and Cricket has to stop them... Will Cricket figure things out... Enjoyable to say the least
It's been a while since I was that thrown by what happens in a book!
I seriously did not expect what happened. Not even a little. Not even at all.
Masterful stroke by Christine Gael, with a cliffhanger that makes me impatiently await the next book of the series! Looking forward to see what happens to Cricket, Zoe, and Mee-maw!!
Okay I liked this and I didn't. Some parts just blurred for me but other parts had potential. I loved the story idea but I just didn't get much from the characters. I loved the idea of the magic typewriter and the way it's magic worked. I just felt like the story needed a little more. I love the idea of the older characters and I'll try more off this type.
I am working my way through the PWF books and this author was completely new to me. This is a well written book with a good storey but perhaps a bit too sweet and standard for my taste hence why i have given it four stars.
I love her-Mae in this book!!! I just had to say that first. Enjoyable book with lots of twist along the way. Towards the end of the book the action really picks up, and the ending will blow your mind.
This is part of that cluster of paranormal women's fiction. Some of them did make me chuckle. This, no, not one of the humorous ones. Ends on a cliffhanger. It’s the end of the line for me with this author.
I read Writing Wrongs on a recommendation from an author friend and I’m so glad I did! This book is Paranormal Women’s Fic, which is a fun, new genre about ladies on the shady side of forty who get involved with magic in one way or another. In Writing Wrongs, the heroine, who’s newly divorced and living in her grandmother’s basement while she tries to figure out what to do with the rest of her life, buys an antique typewriter and starts writing stories that come true.
This book had so many elements I enjoy in a story: small town, quirky family, magic, mystery, a love triangle with two yummy men who may or may not be on the up and up. The last few chapters of the book were incredibly suspenseful and got my heart pounding. If the next book was available, I probably would have jumped right into it so that I could find out what happened next. Hats off to the author for a very clever premise, some fantastic world-building, and an engaging heroine whom I found to be very relatable.
