What is a vampire, The theoretical, metaphoric sort is what this book deals with but also mentions fictional vampires. Copyright is in the 90s but the main parts to read about are 'Monsters of the carpathians where it speaks of the story of Vlad Dracul and Elizabeth Bathory as well as Vampire murderers.
Strange But True Vampires: Blood Suckers From Beyond the Grave focuses less on vampires and more on serial killers from centuries ago as well as more recent times. The book begins with tales of average people being accused of vampirism in Eastern European villages and moves on to provide accounts of the lives and crimes of Vlad Dracula, Elizabeth Bathory, Jeffrey Dahmer, Issei Sagawa, and a few other more obscure murderers. There is also a section on Bram Stoker's Dracula/vampire films but it is quite brief. The real life accounts were sick but an interesting read. This book wasn't great but I liked it a bit more than expected for the historical content.
There were a few historical facts mentioned about a number of historical figures that I haven't read elsewhere before, which was an eye opener, I felt this didn't really concentrate on vampires as a whole though, rather serial killers and terrorists of whom had sexual gratification in mutilating people in a sadomasochistic way, some did bite and even consume blood, but mostly this was more of a fact based crime book, rather than a history of vampires in my humble opinion.
