The Iliad of Homer, translated by Mr. Pope. [Vol. 1]
Alexander Pope's translation of The Iliad was originally released in six volumes between 1715 and 1720. Every year for six years, a new volume was made available which was purchased via subscription. The translation soon became famous and has been called 'the greatest translation ever achieved in English or in any other language'.
The beautiful spacious printing and punctuation of the text in this original edition brings colour, musicality and life to the poem in a way which is difficult to describe and which no modern edition comes close to matching. This eBook is a clean scan of the first volume of the 'subscribers' edition published by Bernard Lintott in 1715. Included in this volume are:

In Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy, Virgil refers to Homer as "Poet sovereign", king of all poets; in the preface to his translation of the Iliad, Alexander Pope acknowledges that Homer has always been considered the "greatest of poets". From antiquity to the present day, Homeric epics have inspired many famous works of literature, music, art, and film.
The question of by whom, when, where and under what circumstances the Iliad and Odyssey were composed continues to be debated. Scholars remain divided as to whether the two works are the product of a single author. It is thought that the poems were composed at some point around the late eighth or early seventh century BC. Many accounts of Homer's life circulated in classical antiquity; the most widespread account was that he was a blind bard from Ionia, a region of central coastal Anatolia in present-day Turkey. Modern scholars consider these accounts legendary.

Ho letto l’illiade delle Edizioni Blackie.
Classici liberati.
Consiglio a TUTTI che vogliono leggere un classico, leggere questa edizione. Ha dei disegnini al lato, ci sono delle note dove spiegano i personaggi dove non sentirsi perso.
Racconta l’illiade come un romanzo e non c’è niente di liù straordinario.
Achille era un uomo d’amore e valoriso, Patrocolo non ne parliamo proprio.
Zeus un cazzimmoso, Agamennone uno scemone… e potrei continuare.. ma tutto queste considerazioni è per dire che grazie a questa edizione, si riesce ad entrare finalmente e a leggere, come se fosse un libro attuale l’illiade.

The ground is dark with blood.
With many books, translations are negligible, with two obvious exceptions, one is the Bible, and surprisingly the other is The Iliad. Each translation can give a different insight and feel to the story. Everyone will have a favorite. I have several.
There are partial translations that are worth reading but as with any abridgment or incomplete Iliad, you will never know what is missing.

There are so many lesser-known translations that they cannot fit in this review. However, they are worth searching for. Most nowadays are just OCR reprints.
You will find that some translations are easier to read but others are easier to listen to on recordings, lectures, Kindle, and the like. If you do not see information on specific translators, it is still worth the speculation and purchase. Right after the translation readability and understanding, do not overlook the introduction which gives an insight into what you are about to read.
The Stephen Mitchell translation goes through each of the major characters so well that you think you know them before you start reading. Other introductions explain the struggle between different types of power. Rodney Merrill's 28-page introduction focuses on singing.
The Peter Green translation is easy to read. It is a transliteration. However, it is all the scholarly supplemental information that gives worth to his contribution.
The Oxford University Press Barry B. Powell has an extensive introduction with real "MAPS". Also, there is the information of the finder Schliemann. We even get annotations on the meaning being conveyed.
The Caroline Alexander Translation is most excellent for a first translation reading. While other translations rely so much on being scholarly, her translation with plenty of white space makes you feel that you are partaking in listening in awe. The only thing missing is the background music.
Our story takes place in the ninth year of the ongoing war. We get some introduction to the first nine years but they are just a background to this tale of pride, sorrow, and revenge. The story will also end abruptly before the end of the war.
We have a wide conflict between the Trojans and Achaeans over a matter of pride; the gods get to take sides and many times direct spears and shields.
Although the more focused conflict is the power struggle between two different types of power. That of Achilles, son of Peleus and the greatest individual warrior, and that of Agamemnon, lord of men, whose power comes from the position.
We are treated to a blow-by-blow inside story as to what each is thinking and an unvarnished description of the perils of war and the search for Arête (to be more like Aries, God of War.)
Next before reading the Odyssey, you will want to bridge the gap with “The War at Troy: What Homer Didn't Tell” by Quintus of Smyrna.

There are so many lesser-known translations that they cannot fit in this review. However, they are worth searching for. Most nowadays are just OCR reprints.
You will find that some translations are easier to read but others are easier to listen to on recordings, lectures, Kindle, and the like. If you do not see information on specific translators, it is still worth the speculation and purchase. Right after the translation readability and understanding, do not overlook the introduction which gives an insight into what you are about to read.
The Stephen Mitchell translation goes through each of the major characters so well that you think you know them before you start reading. Other introductions explain the struggle between different types of power. Rodney Merrill's 28-page introduction focuses on singing.
The Peter Green translation is easy to read. It is a transliteration. However, it is all the scholarly supplemental information that gives worth to his contribution.
The Oxford University Press Barry B. Powell has an extensive introduction with real "MAPS". Also, there is the information of the finder Schliemann. We even get annotations on the meaning being conveyed.
The Caroline Alexander Translation is most excellent for a first translation reading. While other translations rely so much on being scholarly, her translation with plenty of white space makes you feel that you are partaking in listening in awe. The only thing missing is the background music.
Our story takes place in the ninth year of the ongoing war. We get some introduction to the first nine years but they are just a background to this tale of pride, sorrow, and revenge. The story will also end abruptly before the end of the war.
We have a wide conflict between the Trojans and Achaeans over a matter of pride; the gods get to take sides and many times direct spears and shields.
Although the more focused conflict is the power struggle between two different types of power. That of Achilles, son of Peleus and the greatest individual warrior, and that of Agamemnon, lord of men, whose power comes from the position.
We are treated to a blow-by-blow inside story as to what each is thinking and an unvarnished description of the perils of war and the search for Arête (to be more like Aries, God of War.)
Next before reading the Odyssey, you will want to bridge the gap with “The War at Troy: What Homer Didn't Tell” by Quintus of Smyrna.

This review is of the Tantor Media e-audio book narrated by Michael Page, which includes the entire Iliad. I didn't realize until the very end that the translation is centuries old, but it explains some things. (Pope's favorite word: "refulgent." I had to look it up. It means shiny.)
I chose to listen rather than read because that's how Homer's audience would have experienced this epic poem. Also, so I could drive around and do chores. I missed a lot, as would guests at a banquet with a bard, but I got the gist of it. So many ways to die a violent death! Such sorrow, such waste.
I can highly recommend Page as a narrator. Even when I tuned out of the meaning, his delivery was beautiful. Sorry I didn't figure out how to add this edition. It's the one my library has on Overdrive. Oh... maybe Goodreads won't allow it, owned by Amazon as it is...

Parfois, je me dis qu'une citation vaut bien tous les avis littéraires que l'on peut lire, surtout en ce qui concerne les classiques de la littérature.
On ne va pas se mentir, Homère, ce n'est pas tout récent et il y a beaucoup de passages longs et assez barbants. Malgré tout, j'ai adoré cette lecture.
Pour les amateurs de longs monologues et pour retrouver les généalogies entières de bien des personnages de la mythologie, vous serez servis.
J'ai mis du temps à l'avouer, en tant que fan de l'histoire antique, que je n'avais pas encore lu ce classique ; mais en vérité, je ne sais pas si je l'aurai totalement compris, si je l'avais lu plus tôt.
Parce qu'il s'agit d'un récit de guerre. Parce que c'est violent, sanglant, que des hommes meurent - des hommes que l'on connaît, parce qu'ils ont tous un nom. Beaucoup ont entendu parler de la longue énumération des bateaux et des soldats au début de l'Illiade, mais c'est aussi une façon de rendre les combats plus forts encore.
Ce ne sont pas des soldats qui tombent, ce sont des hommes. Des hommes avec des femmes, des enfants, des frères et des sœurs qui les attendent chez eux. Des parents qui se retrouveront sans enfant, de futurs orphelins, des veuves.
Si l'histoire se tourne autour de la colère d'Achille, toutes les étapes qui l'amènent jusqu'à la mort de son grand ennemi Hector, ce n'est pas tout. À mes yeux, il s'agit aussi d'une œuvre contre la guerre. Contre ses affres, même si de tous, aucun n'a réellement le choix que de combattre.
Après, je pousse la réflexion peut-être trop loin ~

Excellent accompaniment to reading Caroline Alexander's latest and greatest translation of the Iliad by Homer. This Ilias includes theclassical Greek text along with a Latin translation. It also includes a plethora of notes about the text itself. Wonderful, especially for a geeky read.
