Embered Soul
(Fall of Creation #1)
by Willem Neill
This book was a Goodreads Giveaway that I won! Yippee! It was right down my alley! Monsters of all kinds, courageous beast skaters trained to fight the known and unknown beasts, sturdy steads that are combat trained and ready, people in towns described by action, livelihood and characters. Each town has their own battles with beasts as do the different lands.
This story is mainly about one beast slayer and all the people, other slayers/fighters, and beasts he encounters. So much happens! Exciting and fascinating creatures, wonderful world building, interesting people and customs.
The ending wasn't a cliffhanger but it does leave things pending.
I would give this a 4.5 star rating but rounding up to 5.
Thanks for the book!

Easy and not overly complex fantasy romp with plenty of monsters.

While by far not a perfect read, this one was fun enough to keep me going all the way through. A bit too many info dumps here and there, and a bit more depth in characters also wouldn't have hurt, but I still liked the book all in all and read it within just a couple of days.

So if you aren't too fussy and enjoy some imaginative monsters to spice up your day, this is well worth a look.

What a fantastic debut novel from a new Australian fantasy author.

Having read hundreds of fantasy books in the past, this new entrant is right up there with some of the well known authors.
I thoroughly enjoyed the adventures of Sebastian of Feldach and his cousin, Ysabel. Both are beast hunters working to save the world of Asthradel, which is fast becoming overridden by some impressively scary beasts.

Well done Willem. I'm so looking forward to the next installment to The Fall of Creation series.

Will develops a wonderfully in depth world, his beasts are exciting to imagine and you struggle to choose which of his warriors you prefer. I will definitely be grabbing book 2 as soon as I can !

The book started off a bit slow with an exposition dump, it didn't quite grab me at the start. I guess it's the result of trying to build a whole new world and get the concepts in your head into the head of the reader, a tricky thing for sure.

At about the 2/3 mark I actually got interested in the story and the direction.

I don't think beast slaying is for me, in fairness, but the human element caught my attention.

Overall, a great first book from Will, well done mate. You seemed to get more comfortable as the book progressed. Look forward to the sequels.

An easy read which falls into some usual fantasy adventuring tropes. The creature design is truly the stand-out aspect of this book and I'm always a fan of characters who are monster hunters by trade. It's a little predictable and some of the flashbacks are a little too long for my taste, but it's an enjoyable read.
