Recipes Have Tasty-Sound Combos But Other Issues...

As a nurse and longtime reader of cookbooks, when I saw this cookbook at one of my favorite book review sites, I had to snap it up. Frankly, though, I had never heard of histamine intolerance, so that stoked my curiosity as well.

The best thing about this book is that the recipes sound like delicious combinations of ingredients, whether you have histamine intolerance or not. However, the book did have some drawbacks, both in the introductory material and the recipes.

This book is not, of course, meant to be only about histamine intolerance (as it is a cookbook), so the authors only give the briefest of overviews about what that means. They have a whole other book that is just about histamine intolerance. However, this science that was so briefly explained in the cookbook was factually inaccurate in at least one point. While histamine can act as a neurotransmitter (as well as in other ways), it is not a “neurotransmitter in the blood.” There is no such beast! By definition, a neurotransmitter is a chemical that helps transfer impulses across nerve fibers.

Some recipes have photos, but not all the photos seem to go with a particular recipe it is paired with. There was a risotto recipe shown with three different garnishes on top, and those garnishes were not in the ingredient list, then one might have been mentioned in the directions (it’s actually hard to tell what the garnishes are). The ingredient list was usually not in the order given in the directions, which is particularly annoying when the ingredient lists are long (which they occasionally are). The authors are from the UK or Australia, so they first give oven temperatures in centigrade, followed by Fahrenheit. However, some Fahrenheit temperatures given are impossible on ovens or just seem not quite right. It looks as though the authors try to give a straight conversion between Celsius and Fahrenheit, not taking into account what ovens can actually do. For instance, one temperature conversion was listed as 302 degrees Fahrenheit! I know my oven isn't that precise, nor should that kind of precision be necessary for a recipe. Call it at 300 degrees and be done with it!

So, this book had its faults and its strength. The recipes themselves actually look good and tasty. Just adjust the oven temperatures as needed, and don't necessarily believe that the photo you're seeing for a recipe is the recipe itself.

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

Really love this book! I did not have time so far to try too much of them, but the book contains a lot of easy, healthy and nutritious recipes. As I have histamine intolerance and various food allergies and intolerances, I find this book especially useful, as for me it is always a huge question, what to cook. And I have to cook a lot, and sometimes it is hard not to eat the same things all the time, but most of these recipes are creative, easy and quick, so I really think that this book can be useful for those who have histamine intolerance. The first part about histamine intolerance and the food lists are also very useful. I can't wait to try all the recipes!

Great Recipes

I’m going to be honest and say I’m not really sure if I have a histamine intolerance but I wanted to try different methods to see if could get rid of some of my inflammatory symptoms. I thought this might be a great place to start and see if it helps. This book has some great information about what ingredients are best and the ones not so great. It also has some wonderful recipes that I can’t wait to try.

No “Real” meals here

Very disappointed.. it’s ok if you want meals from a fancy pretentious cafe with stuff no one has in their house, but it’s not a book to help with everyday life. Complete waste of money

This book was okay. I don't think that I have histamine intolerance, I was just curious about it. There are some interesting recipes that I'll definitely be trying. Downside - not a lot of pictures.

The explanation of what Histamine intolerance is is clearly explained. There is a long list of foods categorized as Low, Medium, and High Histamine content.
The recipe's ingredients are labeled thus so you know the histamine content of the foods used.
There is a wide range of recipes of which I have tried several. They have all worked very well. I have tweaked a few as I eat a Paleo diet so I don't eat any grains, dairy or normal potatoes. In the breakfast smoothies I've replaced Oats with Chia seeds or Ground flax seed which both work very well. I have made all the breakfast smoothies and enjoyed them. These lovely recipes have also provided my breakfasts with a lot of variety.

Mains including Lamb, Greens and Apple stir fry, Honey, Rosemary and Butter Chicken with pea Shoot salad, Seared and Baked Lamb with vegetables were delicious I used sweet potatoes instead of ordinary ones). The Butternut Squash Gnocchi were delicious. It was lovely to have a healthy 'pasta' type dish

I havnt made any juices as I sold my juicer and am avoiding desserts, though the Histashortbread sounds lovely so I might succumb.

I would highly recommend the book
