As a self-proclaimed bibliophile and research geek, it's no wonder Jennie L. Morris writes romance and historical fiction with a flair for realism. Her love for learning led her to obtain degrees in Anthropology and Biology, which she often relies upon during writing. Coming from NE Ohio and raised on a small beef cattle farm, life was anything but ordinary growing up.

Jennie now resides in rural Kentucky, among the bluegrass and dazzling horse farms, with her amazing southern gentleman of a husband and their spoiled boxer pup Archie (Archibald Nubbintgon III). When she isn’t reading or writing, she feeds her tea obsession or perfume addiction, letting the scents and flavors fuel her creative fires.

I’m a big fan of the Brontë sisters since my English teacher tasked us with reading Jane Eyre for English class. Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights are two of my favourite Brontë works.

When I was asked if I wanted to review an ARC, I was delighted. These stories lean on the works of the Brontës for their inspiration. Each work displays this in a different way and similar themes run throughout the anthology. No Limits contains strong female characters, wild landscapes and mystery within its pages.

The Making of Souls by Jennie L. Morris

Ruth dragged herself out of an early life of misery and poverty. Ruth takes over as housekeeper of

Pakenbarth Grange and restores the old, run-down country manor to its full glory. A chance of a new life and romance are within her clutches but tragedy and fate intervene for the unlucky heroine of this tale.

A tale of twists and turns, sadness and hope, just like the best Brontë tales.

The Heart Well Disposed by Joshua Ian

At Cowperton, governess Adine Wheelwright is surviving. She’s content in her role, but the master of the house is a predator. Adine does her best to escape his advances. Meanwhile, she strikes up a friendship and romance with maid Gertrude. They plan to run away together, but like the stories from the Brontë, the path of true love is winding and coarse.

A story of resilience and romance, with two feisty heroines.

Adair Manor by Andra Dill

Emma Turner is strongwilled but fiercely loyal to Adair Manor and her guardian, Jonathon. But Jonathon is due to remarry and Emma is unsure what lies ahead of her, but it may take her far from Adair Manor. When Jonathan hosts a party, matchmaking busybodies invade Adair Manor and their intentions may dictate the rest of Emma’s future.

This is a sweet tale with lively characters, a sense of mischief and a main character who thinks she’s the one on control.

Grisham House by Amanda J Evans

Catherine Jane Howard is a teenager, and her parents have decided on a cruel and unusual punishment for her. She is left at the hands of Mrs. Peckham at Grisham House in the wilds of the countryside. Away from her family, home comforts and her mobile phone, Cathy is forced to be a maid in the grand house.

Cathy begins to build a relationship with young Mr. Grisham, but the reader is unsure of his intentions. Grisham House is a place of dark descrets with a dark underbelly and a history of disappearing maids. Cathy becomes a heroine, worthy of her Brontë namesake.

This story was darker than I thought it would be, which I really enjoyed. The start of the story was light, but grew progressively darker. I loved the supernatural elements and the weather, transporting me to a world I associate with the Brontës. It also reminded me of the harsh worlds and times depicted in the world of the Brontës.

A Day in Thornfield Hall by Casia Courtier

Jane Eerie travels from to Maine to be an au pair at Thornfield Hall. She’s desperate for her first taste of independence and will take care of “Miss Charlotte”.

There is a sense of unease in this story, we’re waiting for what comes next for our heroine, Jane. Like the red room scene in Jane Eyre, Jane’s first impressions and the sights and sounds of Thornfield Hall set the tone of the story.

The bumps in the night hide a dark and deadly secret, that Jane is determined to uncover. This story entwines paranormal terror with the inspiration from Jane Eyre.

Abandoned by Muriel Garcia

Elizabeth has been at boarding school for two years with little, then no contact with her sister Emma and their parents. She decides to return to Huntsville to find her home burned to the ground and her hometown deserted. Trapped in a fog, she discovers an old castle. A place full of secrets about Elizabeth and her past, that she had no memory of.

There is a sense of isolation in this story and the weather adds to the atmosphere. Similar to Jane Eyre, Emma has certain truths hidden from her. But all is slowly revealed in a surprising finale.

Each of the stories in No Limits, features strong characters and shades of dark and light. To summarise, these stories were all unique but shared a common thread – inspired by the wonderful and talented Brontës. No Limits will leave you reaching for a Novel by one of the Brontë sisters.
