Incubus Inc. #2

Incubus Inc.: Book 2

Rate this book
((Minor Spoiler and Warning at the bottom of the blurb. Please read all the way through.))Sameerixis, or Sam for those who actually know him, isn't what you'd call normal. He had been a door-to-door salesman, of sorts. One that peddled wares, wishes, and whims to anyone willing to pay his prices.Except that life is gone now.His old business model had been modernized. Email, phone contacts, letters, flyers, business cards, and scheduled consultations.Sam was a man trapped in place by his own success. And loving it.Additionally, he was also the owner of a Private Military Company that specialized in dealing with criminals or those wanted by a government. His goals were simple. Rebuilding his strength, establishing a comfortable life for himself and others, and taking from Jenaphila as much as he could. As he works to complete those objectives though, Sam's going to run up against some of the biggest players in any of the planes. And make enemies out of more than a few.Everything is changing faster than Sam would like it to. Heading right toward what might just be the end of the prime plane itself.Warning: This novel explores dark subjects, and what people will give up of themselves, and each other, to get what they want. The main character is written as a demon from another plane in a tough situation, and will not make choices that line up with societal and cultural norms. It contains adult themes and moral ambiguities. As with my previous work, explicit scenes are found within. It has violence and a harem relationship.

Incubus Inc. II, the second book in the Incubus Inc. series by Randi Darren, dives deeper into the world of magical contracts, incubus powers, and the morally flexible path of its protagonist, Anthony. This sequel brings more of the same—over-the-top, sometimes uncomfortable, harem-building narrative laced with supernatural deals, where things are rarely what they seem. But is it an improvement over the first book? Well, let's just say it depends on what you're looking for.

Randi Darren continues to deliver a story that focuses on a mixture of power fantasy, magical intrigue, and explicit content. The book picks up where the first left off, with Anthony still navigating his business of granting people their deepest desires—often at a significant moral and ethical cost. If you're here for character development, you'll find it, but only in small doses and mostly revolving around Anthony's internal struggle between doing what is right and indulging in his own selfish needs. However, it's hard to ignore how much of the development feels like it takes a backseat to the harem-building, sexual escapades, and wish fulfillment elements that dominate the book.

Plot & Pacing

Let’s start with the plot. In Incubus Inc. II, Darren presents more deals with demons, mystical entities, and clients, which sets up intriguing scenarios and conflict. Anthony’s business as an incubus, granting wishes to women in exchange for sexual favors, is a unique premise, albeit one that quickly becomes repetitive. The book weaves in a few moral dilemmas, as Anthony tries to balance his growing power, his responsibilities, and his desires. However, these dilemmas often feel underdeveloped or brushed aside in favor of advancing the next steamy scene. For readers who love a fast-paced story with action and sensuality, this might not be a huge problem. However, if you’re craving more substance, it leaves a lot to be desired.

The pacing feels uneven at times. Some moments are drawn out for the sake of erotic tension, while others are rushed—especially when it comes to resolving conflicts. There’s a lack of narrative balance, and you’ll find yourself breezing through some sections while trudging through others. The structure of the book, however, remains consistent with its predecessor: a series of deals, problems, and seductive encounters followed by brief moments of reflection.

Characters

Anthony remains at the center of the story, but his character feels frustratingly stagnant. He’s still caught between being a ruthless businessman and someone who genuinely cares for the people around him. Darren attempts to flesh out this internal struggle, but it often feels more like window dressing than a fully realized character arc. His powers continue to grow, but his moral growth feels stunted, and by the end, we’re left with a protagonist that’s more of the same: an overpowered incubus with questionable ethics.

The women in the story—who primarily serve as Anthony’s clients and love interests—are another mixed bag. While some show glimmers of complexity and depth, they too fall into predictable archetypes. Many of them are characterized mainly by their attraction to Anthony and their willingness to enter into contracts with him. There are hints at interesting backstories, but the focus quickly shifts to their interactions with Anthony, overshadowing any opportunity for meaningful development. Once again, they are more props than participants in the story's growth.

World-Building

The magical and demonic elements of the world remain one of the series’ stronger aspects. Darren expands on the lore introduced in the first book, giving us a better understanding of how Anthony’s abilities work and the wider implications of his actions within the supernatural community. There are moments where the world feels rich with potential—particularly when we explore the rules and intricacies of incubus contracts and the different supernatural entities Anthony encounters.

That said, much of this world-building still feels like it’s being done in service of the harem-building and erotic aspects of the book. The magical rules are often bent or glossed over to keep the plot moving, and there’s a sense that the world could be so much more than it is. It’s frustrating, because there are nuggets of genuinely interesting ideas buried beneath the surface, but they’re never given the attention they deserve.

Writing Style

Randi Darren’s writing style is straightforward and easy to follow, though it often lacks depth and nuance. The dialogue feels flat at times, especially during more intimate or emotional moments. There’s a clear intent to create tension and excitement, but the constant shifts between erotic scenes and plot advancement make it difficult for either aspect to shine fully. It’s a fine balance to strike in a genre like this, and Darren’s approach often feels like he’s prioritizing one over the other in ways that disrupt the flow of the story.

Final Thoughts

Ultimately, Incubus Inc. II will appeal to a certain type of reader: one who’s looking for a blend of supernatural power fantasy, erotic content, and harem-building. If you enjoyed the first book, you’ll likely find more of the same here, with a few extra layers of magical lore sprinkled in for good measure. However, if you’re hoping for more significant character growth, nuanced storytelling, or deeper exploration of the moral dilemmas presented by Anthony’s business, you might come away feeling disappointed.

Randi Darren has created a series that knows its audience and sticks to its strengths. Incubus Inc. II is unapologetically indulgent in its wish-fulfillment and supernatural eroticism, but it struggles to deliver a well-rounded narrative. For those who enjoy the genre and aren’t bothered by the lack of character depth or a complex plot, this might be a fun, escapist read. For others, it’s more of the same surface-level storytelling with little evolution.

Boring.

Nothing much else to say. This seems like a set up for something else. The other books in the series are more self contained, this one has no "self" to contain. If you have not read the rest, this is just a boring mess. If you have, then it is just boring.

Is the Incubus going to be angry? We will see.

The dialogue is really dropping each book. Using pet names for someone does not a relationship make.

This book was a meh overall. There was more inter-person relationships and insecurities than story. I mean, if the book is about a sex fiend, you would expect it to be about relationships and insecurities.

I will read the next book, but this didn't really have anything much I would find entertaining. There are little drops of the author's interconnected series, but that didn't really pique my interest.

I have a strong feeling that the author "over-edits". If that is a real thing. When reading the books recently, they felt off, like the flow of the story was interrupted, like if something was cut out, and nothing fitting was placed to connect the two severed parts correctly again.
Maybe that is why Monster's Mercy was so off to me.

Another good book, but I am wondering where all of this is going. The common theme in these books is encroaching apocalypse as the war between Runner/Srit and Zeus moves into its second round (Worlds War 2?). Extrapolating titles, I anticipate the 3rd Swing Shift before we see another Incubus Inc., but we'll see.

I find the MC weak relatively speaking, but that is the author's pattern as far as I can tell, the slack being taken up by the "harem". I also think (tangent time) that we need a better word than "harem" for these arrangements, and I welcome suggestions.

Anyway, a solid book in this series. On that topic I saw a very scathing review of Super Sales 1 (which I quite enjoyed) that shows that some people think a lot harder about these books. I'm sure if I dissected them I'd be more picky about the situations, but I read this stuff for entertainment and my ratings are based on that.

Sam And His Harem Continue Their Campaign Against Jenaphila.

Sameerixis, titular head of Incubis Inc., discovers that Jenaphila is horribly abusing Imps, Incubi, Sucubi, Elementals, and humans in large numbers, but for unknown reasons. Obviously, Sam must put an end to Jenaphila and her plans -- for his own peace and safety, if nothing else. The question is: how? It will take an army, tons of resources, and careful planning to end Jenaphila and her centuries of power hoarding and scheming. It's a tall order, but Sameerixis is a Planar Lord, so he has a chance of success.

This novel, and the trilogy of which it is a part, interconnects with other trilogies of novels by Randi Darren and William Arand to create a very extensive literary universe. So these novels may be of interest to those who like complex plot lines and extensive character development.

Not as good as his other work

Randi Darren aka William D Arand is my favorite Author. It pains to say anything negative about his work. When I say the particular book I'm reviewing is good I mean it. But that also means if I feel a particular book is not up to standard, I should say that as well. This book seems as if it were rushed to completion. The plot was awkward, and relied too much on magic to save the story. It doesn't matter what trouble you get into if poof!, you're saved by magic again. For someone of Mr Arand's ability, this is not his best work.

Not quite there for me

Being a big William D Arand/Randi Darren fan, but I’m struggling with the main character (Sam). He’s too much of a contradiction; a sex demon who’s a good guy who care too much for his people.
There’s nothing wrong with the story telling and the supporting characters are interesting, but it just doesn’t fit together for me.
There’s a lot of descriptive sex, (too much for my taste) but that’s common on the Randi Darren side.
However, I don’t think this series is as good as many of the others at this time.

2.5 Stars and a DNF, sadly I could not get into this one. I know it is called Incubus so for sure there is going to be sex but come on. The story goes from one sex scene to another. If they are not having sexy they are talking about sex. I like a good sex scene as much as the next guy but this was just to much for me and I was not enjoy it. Maybe it has a story at some point but I dont think I will find out at this point. Only got about 25% into it but could not keep going. I do like the author and I have really liked other books/series by him but I just was not feeling this one.

I'm lost

I'm honestly not smart enough to keep the 100+ characters from all these books straight, and now that there's a bunch of cross references I'm completely lost. Read every book except super sales 3 and still can't keep track of anything. I can't even keep the main character in each book straight, really need some sort of author made resource for like 10 different timelines/worlds.

Great Story

Great book and story, picking up precisely where the first book ended. In fact you should read book one again before picking this one up. Trust me, because after it starts, the action and story-telling almost never stop, and OH! the things you will learn! Enjoy.

Highly recommended for adults and especially adult fans who have read all the other series. You’re going to love this.

I enjoyed the first one in the series, but I've stopped reading the rest of the metaverse stuff and that makes this sequel quite confusing. I still sort of liked it, even though the harem is pretty much blending together and a bunch of the small stuff doesn't really hold together, but I doubt I'll read the next one. I'm particularly annoyed with the lack of perma-death for the good guys–they apparently just come back with bigger bra sizes–which basically ruins any suspense.

Another great read

I love this writer. Out of all his stories Incubus Inc 2 feels the most formulaic, the most by the book, and I still couldn’t stop reading it and find it sweet. The ending is almost anti-climatic due to how much else occurs in the book. This author is the number one reason I have Kindle Unlimited and I’ve considered buying his books just to keep the notes and let friends borrow them.

I can't say I enjoyed this at all in fact the only reason I read/listened to it was because it was in the same universe as the other books. The first book was weak and this one was even weaker. There was no real plot too be had just a bunch of things happening so MC could have sex with more powerful women. It was incredibly dull 85% of the time.

Great continuation of the series.

I once again lost a day to a book. Great character and world development. It’s always difficult to project where this author will go in a series. My favorite parts are tie-ins with other series.

Poor Sam gets none.

Revenge I mean. Poor guy gets psyched up to get some pay back, but life derails it so the author can get more money from me for book 3. Oh but he gets sex and lore. What more could you ask for?

I enjoyed this book, I would really like to read more about the female characters back stories. I’m a little sad that the next book will probably be the last in the series.

Best author in the kindle unlimited service

All of his books are great. The world is great and the tie ins and crossovers are very enjoyable. All of the books are in the same universe and have the potential to cross paths.

Lore drops became even better and helped create this multiverse of planes. However I didn't like the direction that author took with characters and solutions to some of the problems. We will see I guess whenever third one releases. Still a solid book.
