“Amid the chill of a winter’s night, under the falling snow and the shifting trees, a babe was born, crying softly into her mother’s breast. She was healthy and pink-cheeked, with a thin dusting of white-blonde hair atop her little head. As her pale-faced mother drew her last breaths, she ran a shaking hand through that soft, downy hair and called the child “Drifa”.Spirited away at birth and raised in the long-abandoned Fortress Vysala, Lady Drifa never imagined life could be so complicated. When viking raiders raze Vysala to the ground and Drifa is taken prisoner by the handsome warrior chief, Halvar, she realizes that she might not be who she thinks she is and that some secrets are perhaps better left unsaid.”
A baby girl is born: both of her parents are dead. She is raised in her uncle's keep alongside her female cousin. Vikings came and raided the keep, killing most of the inhabitants and torching it.
The girl, her cousin, and her nurse almost escape. Alas, this is not to become a reality. After sending her cousin off to safety, the now-grown girl offers herself as a hostage. (The Vikings admitted that she was the one they sought.)
Thus begins the tale. And a good one it is. Murders are plentiful, a goodly hint of romance. This story is written for adults or over 18 readers only. Despite the premise, this plot is not a fairy tale. To tell more will spoil the read.
I look forward to the following books in the series.
I received this book as a free Kindle ARC copy. I gave it four stars because it is a short story in its current form.
First book in standalone but interconnected series…Fascinating! I was offered this book by the author in a giveaway through some site, I forget. I was in the mood for a shorter book and this one was really quite entertaining. There was struggle, angst, bad people and good people and sometimes they were one in the same. Drifa finds out that she is more than just a young damsel and her Viking captor decides he needs more too. I do hope we hear more about Drifa in the next book. I’m looking forward to it because it appears to be about the young woman from this book who was…never mind. Read this book and you’ll see…
The love story between Drifta and a Viking warrior. Drifter is an orphan living with her uncle his daughter and their nursemaid.Halvar is a Viking warrior sent to capture Drifta. During the pursuit that follows Drifta finds out the name of her father and her position in life. The pursuit also causes a change in feelings and circumstances between them thus causing a change in the direction of their lives. With lots of twists and turns in the story it keeps the pages turning to the end . I very much enjoyed this authors writing style and look forward to reading the next book in the series. This is a must read
This a delightful short story about a young lady named Drifa who was not who she thought she was. One eventful night she went from being an orphan raised by her uncle, to the daughter of king who was killed by a traitor. I like that she’s strong and speaks her mind. She very protective to those she loves. She judges people not for who they are, but for what they do.
Drifa was raised by her uncle & nursemaid after both parents died the day she was born. When she was 20 the Vikings raided their fortress & killed her uncle, she helped her cousin escape by giving herself as a captive. She fell in love with her viking sent to bring her back to the king who killed her father. It's a good read, lots of blood & gore.
A great short read,I would recommend this book to anyone who likes romance and intense emotional connection with the character's in a story because this book will pull you in by it's sheer powerful emotions.

Good read and it explains the plot at the end. Although she seems spoiled throwing a fit in the middle of no where then getting lost in the snow. But the ending was a cliffhanger...
Really captured my attention. It seemed so realistic that I could feel right along with the characters. Their pain, the cold, the yearning. Original storyline; good plot. Look forward to reading more books by this author. I received a free book from the author in exchange for my volunteer review.
An enjoyable quick read. I found this to be an I interesting fictional snap shot into the lives of those living in the times of Vikings. I enjoyed the plot that begin with some mystery around the characters past and the eventual reveal of what had happened. I also enjoyed the ending that promised a HEA for the characters.
