E.M. Swift-Hook is the author of the Fortune's Fools dark space opera series and co-author of the alternate history whodunits the Dai and Julia Mysteries. In the words that Robert Heinlein put into the mouth of Lazarus Long: 'Writing is not necessarily something to be ashamed of, but do it in private and wash your hands afterwards.' Having tried a number of different careers, before settling in the North-East of England with family, three dogs, cats and a small flock of rescued chickens, she now spends a lot of time in private and has very clean hands.
‘In Verse’ is a delightful collection of short poems covering a diverse range of subjects. I feel every reader will find something which they will resonate with whether it be the Critter section through to a non-stereotypical snapshot focused on life and relationships. While I am no poetry expert, in fact, it is a little outside my comfort level, but I did find the collection refreshingly entertaining. I particularly enjoyed ‘Remember, Remember the Fifth of November,’ a social comment on how Guy Fawkes celebrations have taken a back seat and been almost superseded by the rising popularity of Halloween celebrations. There are too many poems to mention them all (over ninety), but I did enjoy ‘My Generation Revisited,’ a take on the Who’s popular song. The collection is well written and definitely worth a look, even if you are like me and not an avid poetry reader
A wonderful collection of poetry that covers subjects from the lofty to the mundane. From pondering love and life to wrangling muddy dogs, there is a poem for any occasion, all of them beautifully written and full of insight. A few of my personal favorites - "Decades," "November Moon," "Unwanted Gift" - but I'm sure you'll have your own. A collection to cherish and enjoy time and time again.
In verse is a book of lovely poems about so many topics in life. I felt all sorts of emotions reading through each poem, some were hilarious, like Macalister and paw prints. Some made me reflect on life like, you will never know, through my window and decades and some made me really sad. All in all I really did enjoy the poems and I recommend this book to poem lovers.
A delightful collection of short poems. It took me a while to finish the collection because I'd read one or two, smile, and go about my day. From flights of fun or fantasy to thoughts on relationships, there are many that strike a note or simply bring a smile.
