Marc-Uwe Kling wurde geboren. Er studierte an der Großen Akademie von Lagado, wie man ein Haus vom Dach her nach unten baut. Er hat über seinen Mitbewohner, ein kommunistisches Känguru, drei kapitalismuskritische Bücher geschrieben, welche sich total gut verkaufen. Außerdem macht er mit seiner Band „Die Gesellschaft“ Reformhauspunk und am Ende muss wieder der Steuerzahler für alles aufkommen. Hey. Ho. Let’s go.

Mal wieder schön, kurz in ein Best of der vier Bücher reinzuhören. Dann doch etwas zu kurz und warum gerade diese? Aber eine gute Essenz der Geschichten zum Anregen fürs Weiterlesen oder -hören.

This free giveaway on Amazon was my first encounter with the "pop cult" (it's not really old enough to be considered a "cult classic", I think) Kangaroo series by Marc-Uwe Kling. Despite, or by some faux elitism because, of its popularity, I've never read any of the books, since, by all accounts (and by first-hand experience with the card game based on the series), I just didn't get the meaning. I realize that, at face value, it's supposed to be comedic, but I'm not sure whether it's also supposed to be educational (in a political sense): the titular character, when expounding leftist theory or "left" positions on international issues, does go beyond being a caricature. I'm not sure whether there is a caricature of "leftist" that would resound with a German audience, but the faithful representation of left discourse would, I think, exceed caricature. On the other hand, the anecdotes collected in this work are not hooks for in-depth explanations or examinations, and the didactical level is really very low; it might introduce some readers to leftist discourse and sub-culture, but only those very unfamiliar with the topic.
Also, the titular character is anti-social and criminal; I'm not sure whether the implication is a sort of hypocritical personality, or that anti-social behaviour and criminality follow from a leftist conviction. There is the possibility that the humorous point is to expose and direct attention to gaps or contradictions in the ideology or lifestyle of people who consider themselves "left". However, the work itself is sympathetic to those positions, as topoi from a certain spectrum of German discourse on international politics which is generally hostile towards in particular the American Republican policies make unquestioned appearances.

All in all, I still do not know what these books really are about, beyond face value. And perhaps they aren't about anything more, nor have to be.

Ich wollte eigentlich nur reinhören um zu sehen ob die Bücher was für mich sind - hab direkt die komplette Lesung durchgehört. Sehr witzig!! Aber halt auch sehr gut vorgetragen. Zugegeben, ein Kängeru hätte ich selber nicht so gern, denn er ist schon sehr anstrenged :') Aber der Humor ist so trocken, klug und trotzdem spritzig. Hat mir gut gefallen!

Das Känguru ist wie immer wunderbar spröde, antikapitalistisch und nervig und die Geschichten genauso unterhaltsam wie skurril.
