The Coterie

Rate this book
Chapman Bouttell, an Australian homicide detective, is drawn violently back into a conspiracy he thought he’d escaped while serving in the Vietnam War when members of his former army unit were found murdered.

Bouttell, near retirement from the Australian Southern Territory Police Force, is summoned to the scene of an apparently motiveless murder in an Adelaide park. He recognizes the victim as another member of the off-the-books covert action unit to which Bouttell had been assigned in Vietnam. His investigation leads to the discovery of the murders of his former fellow soldiers, and Bouttell himself is soon fleeing the agents of “The Coterie,” a rogue intelligence organization.

Gary Gregor writes from experience, having been a Australian Northern Territory police officer. He is also an Australian Army veteran who served in the Vietnam War. He has retired to the South Australia town of his birth and taken up fiction. This is his first novel.

Homicide detective Chapman Boutell was woken from sleep at around 4am and informed of a murder in a park in Adelaide – they needed him as lead investigator. With the rain and wind at its worst, he was resigned to getting wet as it was mid-winter and bitterly cold – waiting for his partner to pick him up, he didn’t think he’d ever been more uncomfortable. But that was all forgotten when he realized he knew the victim – a man he hadn’t seen for forty years, but a friend nevertheless. With the murder of Eddie Dickson, Chap’s life was about to spiral out of control…

Chap had been in Vietnam with Eddie and eight other soldiers during the war. Their operation was covert; a secrecy document had been signed; they were never there. But in the last days of their twelve month tour of duty the inexplicable happened – only four of them returned. Now it seemed that the horrors of those long ago days were about to revisit Chap – he’d thought it was buried in his subconscious, but the memories were as vivid as if they had happened the day before.

Suddenly with his investigation into Eddie’s death heating up, he discovered other murders had happened just days prior and in other parts of the country. He was confused but utterly determined to follow this through to the end – he would avenge his former army mates if it was the last thing he did. But as the clock was ticking faster and his investigation hitting a brick wall, he knew he was in danger himself. What was going to happen? Who could he trust?

This debut novel by Aussie author Gary Gregor is gripping and intense, with an exciting plot that races to the finish. I found it hard to put down and thoroughly enjoyed it. I absolutely did not expect the ending! A crime fiction novel with loads of suspense, I have no hesitation in recommending The Coterie to all lovers of this genre.

Amazing

This book is so good. Loved it. So well thought out and written. Certainly makes you wonder what does go on in the dirty world of politics.
