DEAD MAN’S HAND! It’s poker night at Casa Danvers, and with Wolverine, Monica Rambeau, Spider-Woman, Hazmat, Jessica Jones and Ms. Marvel all in the game, Carol might just lose her shirt. But who – or what – is THE NEXUS and why is it ruining this much needed R&R!?!
KELLY THOMPSON has a degree in Sequential Art from The Savannah College of Art & Design. Her love of comics and superheroes have compelled her since she first discovered them as a teenager. Currently living in Portland, Oregon with her boyfriend and the two brilliant cats that run their lives, you can find Kelly all over the Internet where she is generally well liked, except where she's detested.
Kelly has published two novels - THE GIRL WHO WOULD BE KING (2012) and STORYKILLER (2014) and the graphic novel HEART IN A BOX from Dark Horse Comics (2015). She's currently writing ROGUE & GAMBIT, HAWKEYE, and PHASMA for Marvel Comics and GHOSTBUSTERS for IDW. Other major credits include: A-Force, Captain Marvel & The Carol Corps, Jem and The Holograms, Misfits, Power Rangers Pink, and the creator-owned mini-series Mega Princess.
Kelly's ambitions are eclipsed only by her desire to exist entirely in pajamas. Fortunately pajamas and writers go hand in hand (most of the time). Please buy all her stuff so that she can buy (and wear) more pajamas.
After the dramatic conclusion of “The Last Avenger”, it’s time for something completely different! Captain Marvel #17 brings with it several friends—old and new—as well as a new adventure for them all to take on.
Every hero needs to make an attempt at having downtime, right? Granted, with these guys it usually never works out, at least not for an entire issue. Hence the introduction of a new villain, and the challenges he brings with him.
After everything that happened in the last plot arc, this almost feels like a palate cleanser, seeing Carol running around with some of her best friends and just trying to take it easy (for once in her life). It’s refreshing and playful (well, mostly).
My least favorite of Kelly Thompson’s Captain Marvel books so far. I know it’s a middle child book since it’s between the Last Avenger thread and the Empyre thread, but it was just okay. The main reason I’m giving it 3 and not 2 stars is Thompson’s actual writing. It’s snappy and funny as ever. She knows how to tell a story even when the story isn’t all that gripping. I loved seeing Ms. Marvel and Wolverine in this issue as well. It’s always fun when Thompson brings in other Marvel characters (though nothing will top the Dr. Strange/Carol exchanges as far as I’m concerned). I guess for a single-issue story, the plot isn’t bad—it was just disappointing for me because usually these stories are much more entertaining.
3.25 stars. Captain Marvel has Wolverine, Jessica Drew and others over for poker night. Kamala Khan comes over and has an idea of what they all can do. They end up in a small jam. Cool comic I suppose.
