Seven Secrets to Getting Hired for Jobseekers: How to get Hired, Get Back to Work, and Find a New Job - Even if you Stink at Interviews, Face Age Discrimination and Have Been Out of Work for Years

Rate this book
Unemployment rates are at an all-time high. We're constantly competing with people that are younger, more educated and willing to work for pennies. And often being unemployed isn't even your fault—it's because someone higher up than you made a mistake. These days, you're far more likely to lose your job for something you didn't do rather than something you did. And the longer you're out of work, the harder it is to get back in. Now you can turn the odds in your favor. Employers can be looking for you, not the other way around. You will no longer be told that you're overqualified, underqualified, have too much experience or too little. You can set your own terms . Some people think landing a job is about getting lucky at the right time. But do you want to leave your fate (and your family's) to luck? To throw resumes around and hope you get an interview? Luck is where preparation meets opportunity. We can't control the opportunity, but we can control the preparation. Getting a job is a skill, and like any skill, it can be improved with a system and a mentor. This book is your guide to give you an advantage over the competition and become the perfect candidate. You'll learn… Have you ever tried to drive to an unknown place without directions? You might get there in the end, but you're bound to get lost. Here you'll learn the seven layers of finding your why and how to position yourself to beat the competition—this is your roadmap to your new job. A lot of people say they're passionate about the job, but how can you go above and beyond to really show them that you're the best one for the job? One part of this is investing in yourself and your skills, and you'll learn how to get paid to do it. If you need heart surgery, would you go to the general doctor or a heart surgeon? When you're a specialist, you can name your price because you're the best at what you do. Discover your rare skills and position yourself as the expert they need. It's really easy to get burned out when looking for a job, we often go through manic cycles and end up getting nowhere in the end. And the key to winning the marathon is in this simple children's tale… Fear is a major barrier that holds us back from doing the things which push us forward. You'll learn how to not only overcome that fear, but to see your unemployment like an opportunity. Did you know that most positions get filled before they are ever offered to the public? These are the skills you need to master in order to get that insider information and be one step ahead of your competition. When someone else controls all the factors and you feel like a puppet on a string—your job search efforts are more like gambling. Learn how to be strategic, control as many factors as you can and land that job. This book is not just about getting a job, it's getting your career back on track.

I decided to write this review because I am in the position of having a large gap in my employment record, having done little to cultivate a network and am now looking for a job.

The first 26 pages put me off a little as it seemed the author repeated himself over and over. Then I realized he was coming at his first important point…take responsibility for your life… from different angles. He asks us to make a commitment that we will take responsibility for our destiny. Then comes at that from…take responsibility for everything that happens in the interview room. (New idea to me…which the author showed how to do throughout the book.) The book builds upon the information given.

His goal for the reader? For each of us to get dozens of job offers. So you feel like the princess at the ball with dozens of suitors begging for your hand. (I had to sit with that image for a bit as it was new to me, that recruiters would chase after me, if I learned the 7 steps to getting hired)

Was my employment gap too large? Or had I learned skills that are in demand today. Because of my love of the field I chose, I naturally followed the news on my industry. I know what is coming down the pipeline and can see how to make the most of it. Will my passion really beat expertise? The author says yes. And follows up with how and why.

Their tips on how to use LinkedIn as a way to meet people, show leadership and get hired, were new to me. At first I felt overwhelmed because I have not used LinkedIn, but I relaxed and by slowly reading over time, I came up with ideas of what I could do. The author is a big believer in the power of LinkedIn, and spends quite a bit of time telling how to use its influence.

Basically the book is an easy read. With useful tips sprinkled throughout… (the word “because” is a powerful word. Use it as often as you can. Give complete thought to their questions… Yes, I am a good fit for this position because….. People like to know why). And lest you might talk too much or too little, he gives suggestions on what to do.

I highly recommend the book if you are in the situation as described in the title…wanting to get back into the work force. Or even improving your present job (I shared the information with a friend and her job is improving by applying what I told her from the book). I personally am experiencing more confidence in my job hunting skills. Authors definitely have experience in what they write about.

I received this copy of Seven Secrets for Getting Hired for Job Seekers from the authors as an advanced reader copy. Being familiar with Jonathan Green and knowing how he always delivers on what he promises, I knew that this would be a valuable book for anyone looking to get hired. This book is not only for the unemployed seeking to reenter the labor force but for those who have steady employment and are looking to better themselves on the job. There are many self-help books on the market today that promise to help you get a job and then climb the ladder of success on that job. What sets this book apart from all those books is that what you read in those books is based on theory but what you will read about in this book is based upon practice, not on theory, practices that Green has employed in finding employment and then climbing the ladder of success on those jobs.

In this book, Jonathan and Greig give you all the know-how and all the tools you will need to land the job of your dreams. This book teaches you how to discover and target the right companies for your job search. It teaches you all about the importance networking, developing beneficial relationships and getting into the job pipeline. After reading this book, you will know how to win interviews and then ace those interviews. As a wise man once wrote, or perhaps it was some wise woman, “Luck is when preparation meets opportunity.” This book will not create those opportunities, what it will do is prepare you to meet those opportunities when they present themselves. We create our own luck through preparation. What I wouldn’t have given to have had this book sixty years ago when I left the family farms as a fresh faced kid of sixteen in search of my first real job. Many of the tools and techniques that Jonathan and Greig talk about in this awesome book didn’t even exist back in those good old days.

Jonathan Green begins the discussion by sharing their experience with job loss, job search struggles and navigating awkward conversations about their job search progress. The author then shares techniques, resources and approaches he used to get back on his feet.

As a result, Green created a 7-step process that helped him land his ideal role. This guide is detailed and easy to grasp. The strategy of targeting companies that you want to work for is an interesting approach, especially since the focus of many job seekers is to go where the openings are.

Networking is essential and is discussed in length along with having an up-to-date LinkedIn page. In addition to this, having referrals with connections to your preferred companies is ideal as well. With that said, some of the suggested information is easier said than done.

The job search process isn't as transparent as discussed in the book. Moreover, a good bit of these suggestions are dependent on industry as well as location; even with remote options. Yet, there are some golden nuggets in the mix.

Setting clear and obtainable goals, careful planning, attending networking events and webinars, subscribing to newsletters related to your industry and being on top of every market trend will prove useful in the long-run.

Key Take Away: This book isn't for everyone but does provide some useful information.

How I found this book: Pinterest. It was in the feed of books similar to the one I was viewing.

It's so true that it's the way you think about something that determines your attitude to it. Seven Secrets is a book determined to put you back in the driving seat in your job search - in fact: the focus is on your career and the job is the tool to get you there. Woo!

So often we are sold the idea at the moment that we should almost 'take what we can get'. But Mr Green offers tools which increase your confidence that employers will come after YOU!

A lovely one is to put the effect of something you did in a way that demonstrates it's real impact. So, for me I "Sold 500 copies of a book I wrote that helps Guyanese children preserve and enjoy their cultural heritage." Sounds better than 'sold 500 books to foreign school system, eh!"

I've found other famous books like the 'parachute' series just too big and unwieldly to go through... This book contains focused and impactful hacks. I love it, and shall keep it close by.

One thing I appreciate about this is that the two authors make their livings doing exactly what the title directs - guiding people to find engaging, challenging, and fulfilling employment.
The steps make sense, but what sets this book apart is that each step is outlined with all the actions laid out, and put into context from both the jobseeker’s perspective as well as that of the prospective employer.
Rule of thumb statistics, survey results, and real world examples are all used to show why each action is necessary, and why each is in the order it’s presented.
When I started going through the process, it was startling to see the shift in perspective I was experiencing just in the first couple exercises. The sense of nagging futility began lifting, and I actually began to feel empowered.
This is startlingly helpful, and fits squarely in to the real world.

This book exceeded my expectations. I figured it would go over the standard talking points about methods for finding jobs and doing interviews, but there's so much more than that. It gives you effective tips for how to network through social media and transform that into direct person-to-person contact with influential people who can help you acquire your dream job.

The book doesn't just provide vague tips and platitudes about searching for jobs. There are step-by-step instructions on how to connect with people, what to say, and how to leave a lasting impression with individuals who can positively impact your career. Most of the job searching and networking tips provided in this book aren't taught in high school, college, or grad schools. Following the advice in this book can exponentionally improve the probability of landing a job you really want.

I purchased this book for my niece who will be graduating from college this Spring. I wanted to read the book prior to giving it to her to determine if the information would be beneficial. The book exceeded my expectations. I especially appreciated the step-by-step advice that covered so many areas that are often forgotten by applicants; such as how to prepare for an interview, how to handle the actual interview, networking, etc. I'm looking forward to providing her a leg up on the interview process.

This is the book I needed several years ago. Covering areas such as attitude, preparation, actions to take, and how to handle interviews, on every page I wished I had this during my last time of searching for a new job. I'd recommend this book highly if you have begun the search for a new job or have been in the process of looking.

Great start and a swift kick in the pants

Sometimes as a job seeker, we need to be pulled out of our self-pity and doubt. We then need to be told what the next steps are and how to get there.
No more complaining allowed as you get a plan of attack and a reminder that you have value as a job seeker and as a person.

Highly recommended.

I am not getting paid for this review. This is my honest review. This book is helpful for getting the job/ career you desire without any added fluff. The chapters are short and terse. It can be read in one day. Some of the informative is just common sense information. I wish it had a workbook to go with it. It is more advice based than practical information to use right away.
