How to Follow Jesus: A Practical Guide for Growing Your Faith

Rate this book

Millions of people want to follow Jesus, but don't know how. Upon becoming Christians, new believers often end up paralyzed. They become overwhelmed trying to master complicated doctrines, frustrated by a large list of rules for policing their lives, and bewildered by a new (and strange) vocabulary. Even worse, there are few books offering simple and clear advice to guide a Christian's first spiritual steps that are written in common, contemporary language. Until now.

In How to Follow Jesus, Craig Springer, executive director of Alpha USA, one of America's most effective evangelism movements, explodes numerous myths surrounding the Christian faith that create unnecessary obstacles to growth, including: illustrating that sin and temptation are not the greatest threat to a flourishing faith, forgiveness means going through rather than around our feelings, and how disappointment in the church may be the essential step in growing a foundation for life-changing community. Sharing personal stories from his own journey to a mature faith, Springer sets readers at ease and offers them practical, easy-to-implement advice for following Jesus. Destined to become a timeless classic, How to Follow Jesus is a must read for new and returning Christians.

I cannot recommend this book enough. If someone were to approach me and ask what it means practically to follow Jesus I would buy them this book and invite them to walk through it. Simple, concise, approachable, humorous, void of any “Christian-ese” language - a great roadmap for the new Christian or the follower of Jesus who feels that their faith has grown murky, too complex or dry.

This is a great book for a new Christian and a good reminder for people that have been following Jesus for years. A couple of chapters challenged me to work on a few things in my life. The only fault in this book is the author tells lots of stories that were to lengthy and at times seemed like rambling.

This is a book for anyone that wants to see more about a relationship with Jesus Christ. It is an easy read. We used it in a small group and everyone liked it. It created many discussions. I recommend this book for small groups or an individual read.

Craig gives a thorough look at becoming a disciple of Christ, and he avoids the theological double-speak. This text is evangelical, however, and reflects that paradigm -- cherry-picking out-of-context verses to prove the author's given point, veiled Reformed theology, and a prosperity point of view on "stewardship." As an advocate of historical-critical biblical theory, I find this perspective very narrow and misleading. But overall, Craig's book gets it right. Following Jesus is about humility, repentance, conversion, forgiveness, and love. And I will give him four stars for that.
