A Paranormal Women’s Fiction with a bit of class, and a lot of sass for anyone over forty!
Over the hill, all outta ducks to give, and suddenly life is looking up . . .even if you’re living with a ghost and fighting off werewolves.
Moving back to Savannah changed my life in all the best ways. New job. New friends. As far from my ex-husband as possible.
I didn’t count on the Shadow World intensifying its hold on my life.
Color me surprised, when a new job lands in my lap watching over a fairy ring. Worth ten times what I’d make anywhere else, it seems too good to be true. I take it anyway.
And that’s when things get weird.
Spells are cast on my friends that seems to make them lose their marbles.
I’ve got a Bigfoot baking in my kitchen.
And a skeleton is quickly becoming my go-to guy. Which is silly because the eye candy strutting around in front of me is drool worthy. (I’m looking at you, Crash. Really looking 0_0)
Nothing in Savannah is what it seems, and the magic and undercurrents of this city are pulling me onto a dangerous path.
But with a Fae Queen begging my help, and the darkness closing in, I can only do one thing.
Pop a couple Advil, and kick some serious ducking butt.
A long time ago, in a galaxy far away, I was born into a family of Star Wars nuts. I have a lot of siblings (somewhere I lost count but I think there was more than could be numbered on one hand) and being one of the young padawans I was subjected to Star Wars marathons, on a regular basis. If you've read any of my books you'll see there is often a reference to said movies as a small homage to my upbringing. May the force be with you and all that jazz.
I started writing when I realized I didn't want to grow up not believing in magic, or not believing in creatures everyone else said didn't exist. That being said, I have never seen a fairy, unicorn or dragon. I had a neighbour who swore they fed the leprechauns in their garden, but I never caught the little buggers no matter how long I lay in wait. (And consequently had to help the neighbours plant new flowers to replace those I killed waiting for the leprechauns to show their faces.)
Along the way, I found my husband who is the rock that keeps me from floating away into my dreams, and we have a little boy who is the centre of our world. Living on a farm keeps us busy (as if the writing wasn't enough) and I have more than my share of stories about wrestling with cows, helping birth calves and ending up in the creek during the process, falling in the mud (we'll call it mud but we all know that on a farm, mud is rarely mud) and chasing escaped livestock in the hopes the four legged convicts don't make it to the highway.
I've taken up archery, and the goal is to move into horseback archery in time (you know, when I can hit the target on a consistent basis) and when no one is looking, I love to bake (this doesn't happen often as it's hard to keep the sweet treats in stock with two boys in the house.)
As to what's coming next for me? More stories (since those never stop inside my head, I might as well share them with all of you!) and more adventures. Pretty much, when the fancy strikes, I'll jump on it. Leap before you look I'm sure that motto was created for me.
Or was that . . . think big and dream bigger, ready, set, pull the trigger . . . yeah. That one is a good one too. But only if you have a gun. And are hunting elephants. Which is not cool because of so many reasons. Let's stick with the first one with an addendum.
Leap before you look and let your dreams carry you on their wings. And that, my friends, is me in a nutshell.
This series is going to be one of those that just get better and better even though the first book was amazing to start with!
Midlife Fairy Hunter continues the journey with Breena discovering new 'things' as well as being chased by other 'things'. I love the tension that is building up between her and Crash and me (ha!)!!! He is my ultimate dream for a character in a book like this!!
I adore this storyline, I love where the book takes us and I love how Shannon Mayer portrays her characters with vivid life like qualities.
I am lucky to be reading these books at this point because book 3 is only a matter of weeks away. These first two have been on Kindle Unlimited (UK), if book 3 needs to be purchased, I definitely will be buying!
I like Breena for the most part, even though in this book she got a bit repetitive with her preaching, making her seem a bit pretentious. And I really like her friends - Robert, Feish, Suzy was fun.
I really dislike the Hollows Group. I frankly think they're worthless - this is the second book where she's needed to save their asses, but they still treat her like garbage. And honestly, nothing makes up for the shitty way they have treated her. I will never like Corb - never - because of how he treated her in book 1. So I am just absolutely not here for him as possible love interest.
I really dislike the way she allows her ex to still treat her as a doormat. In this book, after taking nearly everything from her, he comes back and tries to take more. She catches him, and rather than a host of good responses - calling the police (since she caught him breaking in and stealing her shit), or just fucking beating his ass - she just gives him a stern talking to and lets him leave. Are you kidding me with that? This doesn't make her look like a strong female lead. It makes her looks like a spineless moron who is still letting her ex get away with treating her like shit. It undercuts her character badly.
Her character is also badly undercut by even being interested in Corb, who treated her like complete shit from beginning to end of book 1. Seriously, just no.
I like Crash. I like Gran. I like the mystery unfolding about who/what Breena is. I like the idea of this series - the world it creates, and the complicated natures of fae. Big points in this book for Karissa. So ... I'm giving it 4 and going forward, with some concerns.
Breena O'Riley is a forty-year old recent divorcee returned back to her home-town when her latent supernatural abilities appear. She's older than her peers and it affects her physically; her knees creak, she can't run as fast, and her body is not what is what comes up when you google: sexy woman. All of these characteristics make her endearing, however, it quickly becomes clear that Breena is insecure. I can tolerate only so much, and slut-shaming and bashing women because of their youth, perky boobs and apparent lack of wrinkles and is not it for me. It's distasteful, unnecessary and doesn't add anything to Breena's character, except make me dislike her.
Another criticism I have is the author's inability to type out swear words in the book. I thought that characters were actually saying 'duck' and 'ducking', until the tail-end of the book when I realized it was a placeholder for the word "fuck", when Breena mentally states that a character dropped an f-bomb while the character in dialogue said, 'duck'. If you're having your characters swear, you can type it out, it's not sacrilegious to do so.
That said I did enjoy Midlife Bounty Hunter, it did take haranguing to get through the beginning, but I was glad I stood by it. It picks up after the last book quite well, especially in the second half, upping the ante in terms of the mysterious entities trying to ruin Savannah, and provides us with a little, and I do mean this literally, little insight into who and what Breena is.
However, will I be continuing this series? That is yet to be seen.
This series is so good as a bit of light UF relief. Bree has now got a team around her and is coming into her own. These stories are action packed and fast paced- just what the doctor ordered.
I love this book series! I love Corb but I I liked how the twists and mysteries turned out. I can't wait to see what happens next with Breena & friends! I love Robert! His character is heartwarming even if he is only able to say one special word most of the time.
Over the hill, all outta ducks to give, and suddenly life is looking up . . .even if you're living with a ghost and fighting off werewolves.
"I smiled and shrugged. "What can I say? I'm a woman of mystery and full of plot twists you'll probably never see coming." - Midlife Fairy Hunter by Shannon Mayer
"The mirror in front of me was most certainly not magical, or if it was it was kind of a dick" - Midlife Fairy Hunter by Shannon Mayer
This one's a tale of mystery full of plot twists you'll probably never see coming. It features a 40 something woman with a broken filter who was done caring what everyone else thought, an animated skeleton and an undead horse, who happen to be among my favourites, A more or less stupid werewolf who got his tail in a twist, And giant spider reading and editing books, among others, - How that works you're gonna have to read this to find out. :D
A determined woman fighting with everything she's got to help those she loves with a lot of classy snark and sass.
This series is amazing. Bree is the perfect fMC for me, as it's nice to see someone who knows what she wants because of her life experiences so far. That maturity just makes her relatable
This series just keeps getting better. I love everything about this book from the plotting and pacing to the character development and romantic tension. The expanding group of sidekicks is wonderful and never detracts from the main arc.
This book was awesome. It was a adrenaline rush. I was waiting for the end to smack me. It did. I felt the ending all the way to my bones. I can't wait for more of this story. The new twist is going to be interesting to see play out. I also love the different people that are going to make up this group of friends. Well done
Shannon Mayer "Midlife Fairy Hunter" (Forty Proof #2) is a wonderfully original and quirky look at our heroine who is over 40 and starting over. I pissed myself laughing out loud all the way through. Shannon is a loose cannon when she writes and trust me you would not want her any other way. Shannon and the other Fab 13 are taking the world by storm by showing that being over 40 does not mean the end of life but something to be celebrated, pee pads and all. This brilliant story takes us on a journey where Breena finds herself in the most unlikely of situations and it is hard not to feel like you are on the run with her every step of the way. With laughter and magic, ex husbands and demons, leprechauns, werewolves, skeletons and more and you have everything you could ever want in a story, now you just need a bottle of wine and a quiet place to lose yourself in Shannon's fantastic writing. Bring on the next book.
A great second instalment to this series! I'm really liking this and cant wait to see where it goes. I was too caught up in the excitement of the last one to see any faults, but this time round, my eyes are wide open. It's less that the things are bad, it's just that I would like better. I just want some more background on a lot of the characters, or at least more interactions. We've met so many people and yet I know nothing beyond the names of them. I'm still very happy though.
This second book in the Forty-Proof series starts five days after book one, and though you don’t have to have read that, it enriches this one if you have.
Breena is a middle aged misfit, recently moved to her hometown of Savannah after twenty years, to try and get back her dead granny’s house that her ex husband stole from her whilst Bree was incarcerated in a mental health institute he’d put her in - because she could see things that don’t exist - according to ‘Himself’. The ex.
He gaslighted her, emotionally abused her and still won’t let her live life now they’re divorced. And to be honest he’s a weakly weasle of a man with a superiority complex - don’t worry, he’ll get his ‘reward’ as due.
There’s magic in Savannah and Bree now believes in it.
She’s smart, can fight, tell off werewolves and is not afraid to own her mature, burgeoning hormones and man-crushes.
Add in the fact she is a kick-ass, snarky forty-plus woman with curves and baggage - who adopts people wherever she goes - it’s a very fun read. And I love that #PWF is a new emerging sub genre - about time too. I can also relate to the hot flashes.
Holy Hell this was fab and I know some future bad guys I think; enough bread crumbs and red herrings left scattered to form book three.
So many things were answered in this one; why Crash * a very hot, dubious smith * is, well, complicated, the why of Sarge’s aggression, the importance of the house and - what you really do with boy butter. Those scenes. OMG I laughed so hard at this. To top it off, the ‘supporting cast’ includes her ex’s cousin Corb, ridiculously hot and young, a water maid Feish, who looks more than a bit like a fish, Eric the gentle shapeshifter’Bigfoot’ who bakes and gardens, and a wobbly dead skeleton called Robert, and this ensemble rocks. There’s plenty of tension, action, emotion, laughter and surprises to be had. I absolutely loved this. Now go buy it.
There are so many things to love about this book and series so far; a kick butt heroine who is FINALLY coming into her own, the shadow world that is seeping through Savannah, the adult situations (talking bills and danger here), not to mention the aches and pains that go along with aging.... it's a fine wine of a book I want to savor.
The maturity shown by Breena deftly sidesteps the plot holes and devices so many books in this genre employ. Seriously, this woman knows who she is, what she can bring to the table and how to look beyond the obvious. What she doesn't know? Her worth. Her true talents. Or why anyone would want her. In other words, she is a normal, modern woman, riddled with strength and insecurities - and it's wonderful to see. I really like her, I am enjoying her journey and I can't wait to see where she goes from here, and how Savannah has to change to accommodate the newest Guardian.
What I did NOT like however? The constant and incessant naysaying against aging. Yes, she's 41. We get it. She hurts. Her back is sore. She has fine lines and maybe a few gray hairs. But, and here's the thing - she is ONLY 41! That is not dead, and it's not unattractive. I kept getting annoyed at the sheer number of people that mentioned her age or how many times she thought about it or put herself down for it. Maybe it's because of the situation that she finds herself in, fighting with those much younger that she, but I'm 40, and I don't spend my days lamenting my aging. Mind you, this book has a bit less of it than Book 1 - and more people around Breena are starting to see her worth. I expect that Book 3 will continue this trend.
All in all, this is a fantastic book and worth reading.
The hallmark of a good book for me is staying up late to read, reading before work, squeezing every single second out of my lunch hour to keep reading, considering calling in sick to read -- and this book fits every one of those points. I'm exhausted and have the bags under my eyes to prove it, but I wouldn't have missed a second of this story.
You can tell when an author plans out her stories, and when an author is a "pantser."
This store is very well-crafted and thought out, which is one of the things that makes it so good. There are elements in the book 1 that foreshadow what comes in this book. There's no way that that's by accident. Setting up the character arcs, the tension, the plot twists, the red herrings and finally the conclusion is so much stronger in a story that's been planned out. This story has all of those elements, and I can't wait to read the next book.
In some of the other books I've read this month & last month, I've kind of wondered whether I'm not enjoying them because of the lockdown, because I feel like I'm living in a real-life dystopian world. But this book proves that theory completely wrong. The problem with the other books is they just weren't as good as this.
So Shannon, please hurry, hurry, hurry with the Forth Proof #3!
Hoo boy. Have I found a new genre I can't put down. I love, love Bree. This story is so good. Fantastic story, fraught with mystery, slow burn, and fae.
Breena is a fun character in this book. I enjoy getting to know more about her and her friends. This book is funny and makes me feel better about my age. I know how Breena feels! We are not old yet! I really love this series! I think someone in TV or movies should grab this series and make a few funny and cute movies or a TV series! I love how the humor is sprinkled in and to me, it makes the characters more "human" and more likable. Sometimes books make characters unattainable but this series makes me feel like the characters are people I know and they are my friends too. Seeing this on TV or on the big screen would be a great way to share with a wider audience that may not have read the series yet. I say, if you see Shannon Mayer's books buy them; you will be glad you did! This book was a audio book I listen too and I want to say Lauren Fortgang helped bring the story and all the fun charterers to life.
Breena O'Rylee is up to more otherworldly adventures in the second installment of the "Forty Proof Series". She has a new job, new friends and lots more of the "shadow world" craziness. Breena gets a new job for the fairy queen watching over a fairy circle. She is offered about ten times what she would usually make. Might as well take it since her job with the Hollows group is gone and her mentor is not himself, neither are any of the members of the group. All of them are acting crazy. So she decides to set up her own group. Starting with ERic, the Bigfoot. He enjoys baking in the kitchen-great perk! Her friend, Robert the skeleton is helping out. The situation in Savannah is getting more and more dangerous and noone is doing anything about it. So what is a girl to do? Jump in with both feet, kick some butt and worry about the consequences later.
Breena is getting in shape and gaining in power. She has off again and on again crushes on Crash and Corb and secretly enjoys other eye candy. Apparently she is divorced but not dead. Even though the Hollows are down on her, others see her talents and potential and employ her. Twists and turns abound. I like the action, humor, and romance. I look forward to the next book.
Book 2 is another winner, with more answers, which brings more questions. The writing and story are excellent, and the characters make you root for them. Shannon Mayer has a well crafted series going here and I can't wait to see what happens next!
The Hollows seem to hinder rather than help. More on the ally guessing game and Breena trying to navigate the shadow world. Probably the most light hearted love triangle going on. Robert and Breena were sweet and the horse was cool. I like how everyone keeps underestimating her. On the fence about Crash and Corb.

Just like the first book in the series, this was a fun read. The writing is smooth and engaging, the characters intriguing. In the shadow world is hard to say who's the good guy. As she is tasked with spying on the fae and retrieving a magic artifact, she uncovers dark secrets. There is never a dull moment and I love how the mysteries and twists turn out.
The storyline just gets better and better! Robert is seriously the BEST sidekick EVER!!!! That ending has me biting my nails and I can't wait to see where this goes. Well done! Highly recommend if uour looking for a badbutt woman with all the aches and pains we have but still kicking tushes.
OMG! I ducking loved this and I wanna be in Breena’s team! If you thought the first book was awesome then wait till you read this one cause it’s even better! It’s had me howling with laughter, had me cringing in places, cheering in others and feeling the heat if you know what I mean and I have to say I am totally in awe of them all! With twists and turns galore, action, adventure this Savannah based paranormal story with its relatable kick ass over 40’s heroine will grab you from the get go and will find a place in your heart! I absolutely cannot wait for book 3!
This second book in The Forty Proof series is just as entertaining as the first. I laughed a lot and was completely caught up in the magic and action. Looking forward to the next installment!!
I absolutely love the second installment of The Forty Proof series. Breena is amazing, and I just love how much her character grew in this book. I love how we saw a lot from Eric and Robert. I also enjoyed meeting Skeletor. I love that name!! Loved diving a bit into the Fae world too. This book was definitely a page turner and it kept me on the edge of my seat! Looking forward to discovering many unanswered questions in the next installment and for Breena to kick the baddies butts!! Definitely a must read series!!
